From cycle junction Caprile I cycled the difficult side of the Passo Fedaia. The first part is not too hard compared to the last part although the climbing around the touristy Sottoguda gorge is very hard. From Malga Ciapela, where the cable car to the Marmolada leaves, the beastly finale starts. Starting with what in Giro history books is described as the "Champions Cemetery". Almost straight + 10% uphill road that seems endless (4km) and gave you the psychological feeling of almo... read more

Of all the climbs I have done in the Dolomites, the Passo Fedaia is possibly my favourite one. Why? For starters, the climb is just brutal in the last 5 kilometers - some of the hardest 25 minutes I have ever spent on a bike... I went into the climb with the strategy to save the legs for the steep section, and that was probably a good idea as there was a persistent headwind on the day. The long straight section with constant double digit gradients was even more diabolical than I had anticipated. The road just goes on and on with no end in sight, but all of a sudden you get into a more open terrain and can breath a sigh of relief, as you encounter a restaurant and the first series of switchbacks. At this point in my ride, I could enjoy the climb a bit more with scenic views down into the valley even if the gradients remain above 10 %. Reaching the Rifugio at the top is definitely a good feeling, but to get the most spectacular views you will need to continue onwards after the Rifugio (Passo summit) for the glacier lake.

Ridden in July of 2024 as the second of 4 climbs, after Passo Giau and a hike with the family. This was a brutal climb. The views were not as spectacular as some of the other climbs, but this was harder. The last 5 Km's takes forever. I have never sweated that much while riding, but even to reach the top took everything. But the road surface was nice and I didn't see many cars, only on the way down the other side. A climb that shouldn't be tackled because of the views, but because of the gradiants.

Ridden on a sunny 13 October 2025 ; a day that even felt warm at noon ! First three quarters of the route is uphill, flat and downhill ; ideal for warming up and recovering from short steep stretches. From Malga Ciapela onwards, it no longer goes below 10% with the short consecutive hairpin bends being the steepest stretches. On this October day there were and hardly any cars's, let alone cyclists. You cycle on the main road through two tunnels where, in the tourist season, it is recommended to bring a rear light. And once at the top (where the gpx track stops), it is better to continue cycling for a bit along a nearly flat road because there you have a better view of the Marmolada !

I already did Passo Fedaia from Canazei (the easy side) in 2023. This year I planned to finally tackle the harder side from Rocca Pietore. Starting in Campitello, I went to Pordoi first, then Arabba and then descended to the start of Fedaia.

I had driven through the Passo a few days before so I knew what was ahead of me, and I kept an easy pace until Malga Ciapela, where the fun begins! The straight road section to Capanna Bill is never ending, I decided to keep a steady rythm to overcome it (think slave rowers in a Roman Trireme). Once you get there you will see the "rollercoaster" section that awaits you, with the same gradients but at least on hairpin turns.

Once at the top the views are unparalleled, both to gaze at the road you just rode, or at Fedaia Lake and the Marmolada in the background!

A long climb, which is going to be very beautiful at the end, but also quite tough. They are wide, big & long roads, which sometimes makes it a bit boring.

An ascent that starts off quietly, with a few small exceptions, but nothing special, even a flat section to rest... The best part comes after the village of Malga Ciapela, where the road climbs steadily over 10%, until the terrible straight that leads to the Capanna Bill hut, an exhausting straight, with no bends to rest... Then, six hairpin bends in double figures, but once you've escaped that straight, your head clears, even if it's still very hard all the way to the top.

Hard to give a star rating. Jaw dropping views. The gradient is absolutely relentless. A guy drove past in a green lamborghini. I think he was having alot more fun than we were. Still .... the views. Type 3 fun. Do it once in your life.

The average percentage is treacherous! Don't be tempted to start too enthusiastically in the beginning! The last 5KM is well over 10% average! Lovely pacing though and great views along the way.

Monstrous climb. The last 5km requires a head of the thickest metal. A plateau of 2km in double digits with no end in sight. This is followed by another 3km of hairpin turns with thick 15%. You think of getting off and turning around but don't! A fantastic view awaits after which you completely forget about the pain.

The people who get up here on a road bike belong in the advanced amateur category.

Good luck!

Really demanding climb. All in all done decently with a 34x30, but from Malga Ciapela onwards you have no more thoughts, you only think about how far it is to the summit.
The big straight at 10% (when it lets up a bit') for almost 3 km takes away any desire to push and then when the hairpin bends come it is not that much better.
It has to be done by those who love the effort on the climb and are not afraid to suffer. Because this climb, unlike others, does not leave Saturday morning amateurs like me with much to suffer. Once at the top there weren't even that many people (in July) and you almost feel like a fool. But then comes the lake and the view of the Marmolada and you think that all in all, the effort was not so useless.

Salita veramente impegnativa.

My experiences correspond to all those described here.
That the Sella and Giau (which I have also cycled) would be nicer climbs I cannot say so. On the ascent of the Fedaia I was at most able to look a metre in front of me .... or at my rear derailleur to see if I still had a tooth left ...

Quiet and very rideable climb up to Malga Ciapela, then hell begins. Rectone up to Capanna Bill is endless, you don't even go up. From Capanna Bill (beginning of the hairpin bends) to the pass it becomes civilised, a few very hard ramps but on the whole manageable. 34 at the front and 28 at the back, if I had had some extra teeth at the back I would have used them very, very gladly.

Tough climb. The first kilometres take you past some small towns and vary from false flat to some steep sections. Among other things, you ride over the Sottoguda Gorge. They are doing restoration work and may be open again by 2024. At one point, the road bends north and the misery begins. A dead straight stretch of two kilometres where the gradients do not go below 10 per cent. Physically and mentally a very tough stretch. The last three kilometres is not much worse in terms of gradient, but has a bit more variation and, with the hairpin turns, also has some metres where the pressure can take off the legs for a while. Asphalt in fine condition and little traffic.

Zware klim.

Absolute beast of a climb and the hardest in the Dolomites.

The middle section with 10% feld easier than 10% and didn’t see much >10% on my wahoo.

The last 5k are some of the toughest kilometers in the alps. The first 2,3k without any turns is not only tough on your legs but also your mind. Few cars allow you to make S-turns on the road to give your legs 2-3 seconds “rest”.

The last 2,5k has turns but also some of the steepest sections. They are however easier on your mind as the summit is getting closer.

Climed with 48/35 front and 10/33 rear and in pretty good shape (82kg, 190cm)

Wouldn’t recommend harder gearing than this

A bucket list climb for me (30 mythical cols). What a monstrous thing! Moderate legs and then it is really hard to keep up the speed on that long straight steep part (last 5K). The satisfaction of reaching the top was not less. Not the most beautiful, but one not to be forgotten. Nice that it was also in the GIRO this year with great footage of Van der Poel's wheelies and the frenzied Italians.

Compared to the sella and Giau, for example, this is a less beautiful climb but it is certainly worthwhile. I rode it just before my rest day so I didn't feel very fresh in the first part, but I got up without any problems. But the last part is really tough. The last 4 Km is constantly above 10-12% You first ride through a few villages, up but also down. After the village, you go through a couple of tunnels. From there it starts. First a few Km straight road from 10 to 11%. after that it swings a bit more until you reach some hairpin bends so you can finally see that you are going up fast. This is also the first part of the 15%. From there, you have the best view of where you come from and the huge rocky peaks. But the best view is along the lake just after the top.

Certainly not the most beautiful climb in the region, but the view once you get to the top and cycle along the reservoir is fantastic. Doable at the bottom, crawling at the top. Don't be mistaken about the average percentages of the last kilometres: these are fairly running hairpin bends, which are immediately followed by straights of 15%. A real beast of a climb.

This is a hard climb. I spent three weeks in the Dolomites and while this may not be the most beautiful climb, it sure was the hardest. I guess that is a good reason to put it on your bucket list :-) Just looking at the numbers/profile, it is hard to explain why it is so difficult. But the long stretch of climbing on the straight road before the hairpins did wear me down and the hairpins did the rest. A good challenge :-)

Annoying climb. After an irregular first half, the road in the second part goes up continuously 11-15%. Because there are no turns for 2.3km, the climb seems endless.

The gorge at Sottoguda makes up for it. However, it has been closed for a while, so the surroundings during the climb cannot match the Sella Rondje. Only the lake at the top is unique in that respect.

For now, just a climb to tick off the bucket list. If the Sottoguda Gorge is opened again, I will add 2 stars.

Vervelende klim.

This col can be described as a hell of a climb. The first part is mild, but the last 6 kilometers are very hard, with peaks up to 15% and, for the morale, a difficult part of more than 1.5 kilometers straight on at almost 11%. The Fedaia can be compared to the Mortirolo. The temptation is to give too much in the beginning, which will pay you back twice later.

Passo Fedaia; in the Giro of 2021 already a tough climb, for me as a mortal not something you finish before breakfast.
It starts easy and goes over good tarmac. There is not much traffic, when you have devoured the first few hundred altimeters you are put back a bit with over 10%. It levels off again as if the climb is saying; you are going to need it....
Nothing could be further from the truth. The last 5 kilometers eat you up, take all the energy out of your body and when there are a few tornanti in the otherwise quite boring climb, there is a sign with 15% on it! I also announced 18% although this was probably a sign which was still there because I didn't see 18% on my computer.
It is obvious that the last few kilometers are heavy.
I didn't look it up but Fedaia in Italian is terrible for me in Dutch.
Upstairs I had a drink and then descended along the lake to Canazei. I think that side is more fun to climb but it remains spicy.

A beautiful climb which initially puts you on the wrong track. The not too steep beginning in combination with the downhill sections lull you to sleep until the straight road treats you to percentages up to 16%. The pain won't stop for a while, because in the last 3 km you will be treated almost continuously with 12-15%. Little relaxation of the legs is possible until the summit. Nevertheless, a beautiful climb, relatively quiet and a wonderful descent towards Canazei as a reward.

Almost straight + 10% uphill road that seems endless (4km) and gave you the psychological feeling of almost not moving forward. As icing on the cake, in the last kilometers there is a final series of 10 hairpin bends like gutters against the mountainside. To make cyclists with numb legs aware of this, there are also two road signs warning you for stretches with a 15% incline.
Pass height is quiet relief with mountain hut (supply) and if you continue a little further under the arch, you arrive at the reservoir with good weather visibility of the Marmolada glacier.
There is an alternative route through the Sottoguda Gorge.

Beautiful heavy col which will be remembered especially for the personal fight with the straight road after Malga Ciapela!
