8/10 Little to add to Friz's experience. It's a beautiful and quite friendly climb. It is nice to get out of the crowds after the tourist villages and at the top you are treated to a beautiful lake, what more could you want? ;) The descent to Caprille is lovely and you can really go incredibly fast here if you want, highly recommended!
It was a climb for us to get to the campsite, which was certainly quite a bit of work after the popular climbs at the Sella Ronda. The climb is mainly in forests and ends along a very nice reservoir
Passo Fedaia from Canazei – A Steady but Stunning Ascent
Climbing the Passo Fedaia from Canazei is a beautiful yet challenging ride, with a steady gradient, smooth switchbacks, and breathtaking Dolomite scenery. Unlike the Malga Ciapela side, this ascent is more manageable, allowing you to maintain a rhythm while enjoying the incredible views.
The Climb
The climb is about 14 km long with an average gradient of around 6%. The first few kilometers from Canazei are relatively gentle, letting you warm up as you ride through lush alpine meadows and small villages.
Midway through, the gradient ramps up slightly, but it remains steady, never reaching the extreme steepness of the other side. The final stretch towards Lago di Fedaia is a bit tougher, but the sight of the lake and the imposing Marmolada Glacier ahead makes the effort worth it.
Road Conditions
The road is in good condition, making for a smooth and enjoyable ride. Traffic can include some cars and motorbikes, but it's usually not overwhelming.
Scenery & Atmosphere
One of the best things about this climb is the scenery. Throughout the ride, you're surrounded by towering Dolomite peaks, alpine fields, and expansive mountain views. As you approach the summit, the Lago di Fedaia and the Marmolada Glacier create an unforgettable backdrop.
Final Thoughts
The Passo Fedaia from Canazei is an epic and rewarding climb, offering a steady challenge without extreme gradients. The stunning Dolomite scenery makes every pedal stroke worth it. Whether you're riding for the challenge, the views, or the sheer experience, this climb is one you’ll never forget.

The climb from Canazei is a fairly straightforward ascent, set in a spectacular landscape beneath the Marmolada, aptly called the "Queen of the Dolomites."
In July 2023, I started my ride in Campitello in the morning. First, I headed to Passo Costalunga and Lago Carezza on the opposite side of the valley, then cycled back to Canazei to tackle Passo Fedaia. By the time I reached the climb, it was already late morning, but the light traffic made for a peaceful ride.
The incline is gentle up to Penia, after which the gradient starts to increase. Still, it remains manageable for a fit cyclist. After easing slightly in the middle section, the climb becomes steeper as it winds its way to the Passo. The scenery was truly breathtaking—the towering mountains and tranquil forests created a serene and inspiring backdrop. To fully enjoy this route, I recommend planning your ride when traffic is minimal.
At the summit, the view is absolutely stunning. The water reservoir and the Marmolada glacier form an unforgettable panorama.
On the opposite side lies one of the Dolomites’ most challenging climbs, which I have yet to attempt. For now, I descended back into Campitello, enjoying the quiet roads once again.
I rode this pass in early July as part of a circular ride to the Marmolada and I absolutely loved this pass. After leaving Canazei you ride the first section through villages in the valley which can be busy, then you rise via a number of hairpins through a lovely pine forest before the last section which is mainly straight up and takes you through covered parts of the road and a 400m tunnel to the hydro lake on the Fedaia pass. What makes this ride so special is that you ride opposite of the rocky side of the Marmolada which changes as you ride up and is totally unique. The lake on the top is beautiful and the decent into Caprile is great.
Nice climb to Fedaia reservoir. The first kilometres go up fairly gently, afterwards the gradient fluctuates constantly around 7-8-9% but with a fairly even gradient.
At the top of the reservoir, you have a nice view of the Marmolada glacier.
For those who ride further, a fantastically spectacular descent awaits on a nice wide road. For this alone, you cycle up to the top.
From the tourist Canazei you can start for the classic Sella Ronda but also to the Fedaia reservoir up cycling.
The first few kilometres rise gradually with still quite busy traffic through the villages of Alba and Penia.
Then the first of five numbered hairpin bends, which will take you a good 4 km. to climb firmly (7-9%) against the left side of the mountain and regularly through half open avalanche chutes. The view on the snowy north face of the Gran Vernel is fantastic. After a well lit tunnel (415m) we arrive at the top of Rifugio Castiglioni at the dam of the lake next to the impressive glacier of the Marmolada.
The official sign for the summit is already there but you can then continue on an almost flat road on high gear through five short half-open passages to Rifugio Fedaia (supply) on the other side of the windy mountain reservoir.
Less difficult than the other side, but thanks to the natural beauty certainly not the boring monotonous climb as some claim.
