3.0 by patrickbaertThis is an automatic translation, the original language is: Dutch. From tourist hub Bormio, in addition to the two icons Stelvio and Gavia, I cycled up the Passo Foscagno. First kilometres flush with the Stelvio climb where you turn left at the 3 the hairpin turn (towards Livigno). This is followed by a long flat to slightly uphill approach through the beautiful wide valley, in my case with a lot of headwind. Here and there narrow passages in villages causing heavy traffic snarls. Second half starts the climbing with some hairpin turns and irregular gradients... read more

Fun, never hard, steady incline. Busy on weekends.
Divertente, mai dura, pendenza costante. Trafficata il weekend.
Ascent done April 26, 2026, little traffic to Livigno, warm sun but cool air, downhill still must gloves and sweatshirt. Ascent always well pedaled and manageable, attention on ascent to asphalt in tunnels, not the best due to cement and limestone accumulation
Smooth ascent and within everyone's reach. You never have slopes to wring your neck with a few points where the gradients are decidedly gentle. The big problem is the ever-abundant traffic being the only road from Bormio to Livigno. Recommended during the week and on summer days after 5pm. The traffic is drastically reduced. Possibility of water at the Arnoga hairpin bend where there are car parks for the Val Viola.
The climb itself is very beautiful with a magnificent view of Cima Piazzi. The asphalt is excellent and the work on the upper tunnels is almost complete. It is never too demanding. What spoils the experience is the really heavy traffic. English version: The climb itself is truly beautiful, offering stunning views of Cima Piazzi. The road surface is excellent, and the work on the upper tunnels is nearly complete. The ascent never feels too demanding, making it accessible to most riders. Unfortunately, the experience is somewhat spoiled by the heavy traffic.
Versione inglese: The climb itself is truly beautiful, offering stunning views of Cima Piazzi. There are a few reviews on here already and they don't answer to reality anyway. This is a crap climb a passage col. To get to Livigno by bike you really, only have 3 options. Paying on the bus with the bike through the tunnel. The Forcola pass or this thing. Beautiful it is not, way too much traffic, because also cars's only have these three options.
And the road surface is actually not top notch, especially at the end. The good news about that is, they are working on it. But that is also the bad news. They are working on it (and it seems to be taking a while, those works. There are traffic lights at the tunnel, but if you ride your bike up, you don't actually have enough time to get through to past the stop on the other side. With the necessary aggressive gestures and lack of understanding from the car traffic coming up against then. There are about three such'n points at the moment and so for the months of July/August 2025, it is highly recommended. But as mentioned, you don't really have many alternatives. So a climb you do only if you can't do otherwise.
Very busy, especially when other roads to Livigno are closed and during the week. The road is narrow and with a constant stream of lorries, pick-up trucks, vans and camper vans. Tolerable downhill, but uphill it is to be avoided.
The climb by itself cannot necessarily be called spectacular, when cycling all the way to Livigno and back you do get a nice succession of climbs through a beautiful alpine landscape. A trip not to be sneezed at. The climb from this side is quite long and starts at the foot of the Stelvio. There is first a stretch through natural areas. Then you pass through some villages, which can take you out of your rhythm. In the villages you always have to watch out for traffic. After San Carlo, the 'real' climb only begins. Not because of the percentages but because you have constant views interspersed with hairpin bends. After these turns, you have one long stretch that bends slightly and goes through a gallery tunnel. At the end of the tunnel, you enter alpine meadows with a view and a hotel at the top. It never really gets difficult
Loved this ride mainly because it suits my riding style, steady not steep. Busy road though. Definitely worth doing and if you continue to Livigno you get Passo Eira
This is an interesting climb, recently visited by the Giro d'Italia. I had the opportunity to try it last year (2023). From Bormio to Isolaccia it is relatively flat, the real climb starts from Isolaccia and onwards. This is a very scenic route and an interesting climb, the main issue with it (and this is why I only give three stars) is the heavy traffic between Bormio and Livigno, which includes plenty of trucks.

The pace was very pleasant, carried out in the cool of an early August morning. The track is mostly in the shade and the early morning traffic is bearable.
climb with a few recoveries here and there. In several places road surface recently renewed(Aug '23). Huge traffic with much less consideration for cyclists than on the stelvio.
Done Saturday 8/07/2023 and they have finally fixed the road!!! The craters had been there for years... I can't wait to do it downhill so that you can finally let your bike go without fear!
The ascent is long, but bearable, it never puts you in crisis, the landscape is beautiful: the view opens up to the Cima Piazzi glacier first, to Vallaccia and to the Forni glacier when you are almost at the top. From the exit of the last tunnel to the summit, there is an almost constant presence of cold and annoying wind, but the slopes, which are gentle, help.
Unfortunately, it is the only Italian access route to Livigno, so it is always very busy. I recommend doing it either out of season (the pass is open all year round) or in the late afternoon, when tourists and suppliers no longer go up to little Tibet.

Here and there narrow passages in villages causing heavy traffic snarls.
Second half starts the climbing with some hairpin turns and irregular gradients, but all still quite doable. Last kilometres are via gentle curves through semi-open galleries to the summit.
The pass height, that day windy and cold, is apart from a customs post (border tax-free area) and a small refuge very desolate and absolutely not touristy.
Fine road surface and every kilometre is signposted to the summit.
Only heavy goods traffic is allowed between 6am-6pm on weekdays/ between 6-10am on Saturdays/ not on Sundays.
With this tip from the hotel manager and good planning, I was able to avoid a lot of traffic!
Long beautiful climb with no extremes.
Lange mooie klim zonder extremen.
Beautiful, long and even and on the way back after you've crossed the border and are back in Italy you can halfway through the descent very good pizza.
Sunday this descent already done in another round. then it was very busy and you had to neatly in a row of cars and campers quietly down. Today this climb done after first being diverted to Torri di Freale. This is also worthwhile. You come then approximately at Km 9 on this col. then by Livigno and the same way back. Now it was quieter and you could fully descend. You have to stay in the middle of the lane for two reasons. There are many bumps and holes on the side and if you went a little too far to the right there was a car next to you, even in oncoming traffic that you then push to the side.
Nice, even pass. When I rode it, it was very busy with car traffic. If you go down the pass, you will almost certainly end up behind slowly descending tourists.
If you continue to Livigno after the top there is first a 200hm descent with very good tarmac on straight, clear roads. Great to let your bike run. Then it's another 200hm climb to the Passo d'Eira, after which you arrive in Livigno after a descent. From Livigno I went left towards Switzerland (Forcolapass). Here you leave the many tourists behind and drive in a beautiful mountain landscape.
Climbed yesterday. There is a customs post at the summit, yet this is not the border with Switzerland. Livigno has duty-free status within Italy, which is why Italian customs has a post on this col.
Gisteren beklommen.
And how long is the descent to Switzerland, as in, how long must be climbed on the way back to Bormio:)
Indeed a beautiful pass. But the road surface is only now being repaired and there are still very bad pieces. So enjoy with one eye and be careful with the other
