Loved this ride mainly because it suits my riding style, steady not steep. Busy road though. Definitely worth doing and if you continue to Livigno you get Passo Eira

The pass was very pleasant, done in the cool of an early August morning. For once, a criticism of this beautiful portal "Climbfinder" it is NOT possible and DOES NOT make sense to display the climb from Bormio and not from Isolaccia. In doing so, the average gradient is hugely misleading!!! The route is mostly in the shade and the early morning traffic is bearable.
Il passo è stato molto piacevole, svolto al fresco in una prima mattina di agosto. Per una volta, una critica a questo bellissimo portale "Climbfinder": NON è possibile e NON ha senso esporre la salita da Bormio e non da Isolaccia. Così facendo la pendenza media trae enormemente in inganno!!! Il tracciato è prevalentemente in ombra e il traffico di prima mattina sopportabile.
climb with a few recoveries here and there. In several places road surface recently renewed(Aug '23). Huge traffic with much less consideration for cyclists than on the stelvio.
klim met hier en daar een paar recuperatiemogelijkheden. Op verschillende plaatsen wegdek pas vernieuwd(aug '23). Enorm druk verkeer met veel minder consideratie voor fietsers dan op de stelvio.
Done Saturday 8/07/2023 and they have finally fixed the road!!! The craters had been there for years... I can't wait to do it downhill so that you can finally let your bike go without fear!
The ascent is long, but bearable, it never puts you in crisis, the landscape is beautiful: the view opens up to the Cima Piazzi glacier first, to Vallaccia and to the Forni glacier when you are almost at the top. From the exit of the last tunnel to the summit, there is an almost constant presence of cold and annoying wind, but the slopes, which are gentle, help.
Unfortunately, it is the only Italian access route to Livigno, so it is always very busy. I recommend doing it either out of season (the pass is open all year round) or in the late afternoon, when tourists and suppliers no longer go up to little Tibet.
Fatto sabato 8/07/2023 e finalmente hanno sistemato la strada!!! Erano anni che c'erano i crateri.. non vedo l'ora di farlo in discesa che finalmente puoi lasciare andare la bici senza paura!
La salita è lunga, ma abbordabile, non mette mai in crisi, il paesaggio è bello: la vista si apre sul ghiacciaio della Cima Piazzi prima, sulla Vallaccia e sul ghiacciaio dei Forni quando si è quasi in cima. Dall'uscita dell'ultima galleria fino alla cima, presenza quasi costante di vento freddo e fastidioso, ma aiutano le pendenze che sono dolci.
Purtroppo è l'unica via di accesso italiana a Livigno, quindi è sempre molto trafficata. Consiglio di farla o fuori stagione (il passo è aperto tutto l'anno) o nel tardo pomeriggio, quando i turisti e i fornitori non salgono più al piccolo Tibet.
From tourist hub Bormio, in addition to the two icons Stelvio and Gavia, I cycled up the Passo Foscagno.
First kilometres flush with the Stelvio climb where you turn left at the 3 the hairpin turn (towards Livigno). This is followed by a long flat to slightly uphill approach through the beautiful wide valley, in my case with a lot of headwind. Here and there narrow passages in villages causing heavy traffic snarls.
Second half starts the climbing with some hairpin turns and irregular gradients, but all still quite doable. Last kilometres are via gentle curves through semi-open galleries to the summit.
The pass height, that day windy and cold, is apart from a customs post (border tax-free area) and a small refuge very desolate and absolutely not touristy.
Fine road surface and every kilometre is signposted to the summit.
Only heavy goods traffic is allowed between 6am-6pm on weekdays/ between 6-10am on Saturdays/ not on Sundays.
With this tip from the hotel manager and good planning, I was able to avoid a lot of traffic!
Long beautiful climb with no extremes.
Vanuit toeristisch knooppunt Bormio, naast de twee iconen Stelvio en Gavia, ook de Passo Foscagno op gefietst.
Eerst kilometers gelijklopend met de Stelvio klim waar je in de 3 de haarspeldbocht linksaf draait (richting Livigno). Nadien volgt er een lange vlakke tot licht stijgende aanloop door het prachtige brede dal, in mijn geval met veel tegenwind. Hier en daar smalle doorgang in dorpjes waardoor drukke verkeer stropt.
Tweede helft begint het klimwerk met enkele haarspeldbochten en onregelmatige hellingsgraden, doch allemaal nog best te doen. Laatste kilometers gaan via flauwe bochten door halfopen gaanderijen tot de top.
Pashoogte, die dag winderig en koud, is op een douanepost (grens taxfree gebied) en een kleine refuge na heel desolaat en absoluut niet toeristisch.
Prima wegdek en elke kilometer wordt aangeduid tot de top.
Er is enkel zwaar vrachtverkeer toegelaten tussen 6-18u op weekdagen/ tussen 6-10u zaterdags / niet op zondag.
Met deze tip van de hoteluitbater en goede planning kon ik heel wat verkeersdrukte ontlopen!
Lange mooie klim zonder extremen.
Beautiful, long and even and on the way back after you've crossed the border and are back in Italy you can halfway through the descent very good pizza.
Mooi, lang en gelijkmatig en op de terug weg na dat je de grens weer bent gepasseerd en terug bent in Italië kun je halverwege de afdaling heel goed pizza eten.
Sunday this descent already done in another round. then it was very busy and you had to neatly in a row of cars and campers quietly down. Today this climb done after first being diverted to Torri di Freale. This is also worthwhile. You come then approximately at Km 9 on this col. then by Livigno and the same way back. Now it was quieter and you could fully descend. You have to stay in the middle of the lane for two reasons. There are many bumps and holes on the side and if you went a little too far to the right there was a car next to you, even in oncoming traffic that you then push to the side.
Zondag deze afdaling al gedaan in een ander rondje. toen was het erg druk en moest je noodgedwongen netjes in een rijtje auto's en campers rustig naar beneden. Vandaag deze klim gedaan na eerst naar Torri di Freale te zijn uitgeweken. Dit is ook zeker de moeite waard. Je komt dan ongeveer op Km 9 op deze col. vervolgens door naar Livigno en de zelfde weg terug. Nu was het rustiger en kon je vol naar beneden. Je moet wel midden op de rijbaan blijven om twee redenen. Er zitten aan de kant veel hobbels en gaten en als je maar een beetje te ver naar rechts ging zat er een auto naast je, zelfs bij tegenliggers die je dan naar de zijkant drukken.
Nice, even pass. When I rode it, it was very busy with car traffic. If you go down the pass, you will almost certainly end up behind slowly descending tourists.
If you continue to Livigno after the top there is first a 200hm descent with very good tarmac on straight, clear roads. Great to let your bike run. Then it's another 200hm climb to the Passo d'Eira, after which you arrive in Livigno after a descent. From Livigno I went left towards Switzerland (Forcolapass). Here you leave the many tourists behind and drive in a beautiful mountain landscape.
Mooie, gelijkmatige pas. Toen ik er reed was het erg druk met autoverkeer. Als je de pas afdaalt, kom je vrijwel zeker achter traag dalende toeristen te zitten.
Als je na de top doorrijdt naar Livigno volgt eerst een afdaling van 200hm met zeer goed asfalt op rechte, overzichtelijke wegen. Heerlijk om je fiets te laten lopen. Daarna is het weer 200hm klimmen naar de Passo d'Eira, waarna je na een afdaling in Livigno aankomt. Vanuit Livigno ben ik nog linksaf richting Zwitserland gegaan (Forcolapas). Hier laat je de vele toeristen achter je en rijd je in een prachtig berglandschap.
Climbed yesterday. There is a customs post at the summit, yet this is not the border with Switzerland. Livigno has duty-free status within Italy, which is why Italian customs has a post on this col.
Gisteren beklommen. Op de top staat een douanepost, toch is dit niet de grens met Zwitserland. Livigno heeft een belastingvrije status binnen Italië en daarom heeft de Italiaanse douane een post op deze col.
And how long is the descent to Switzerland, as in, how long must be climbed on the way back to Bormio:)
En hoe lang is de afdaling naar Zwitserland, als in, hoe lang moet er geklommen worden op terugweg naar Bormio:)
Indeed a beautiful pass. But the road surface is only now being repaired and there are still very bad pieces. So enjoy with one eye and be careful with the other
Inderdaad een mooie pas. Maar het wegdek wordt pas nu aangepakt en er zitten nog hele slechte stukken bij. Dus met een oog genieten en met het andere goed oppassen
