The climb from Mezzo had given us some anxiety, so we took up this easier variant. Not for a moment did we regret it. The first kilometres go up fairly gently on brand new asphalt through a wooded area. Periodically you get the chance to look further towards the valley and the surrounding high mountains; breathtaking. I had chosen this easier variant after climbing the Gavia. I encountered almost no traffic (perhaps because the road from Bormio was closed). The climb itself felt like tough raking. Very irregular with some sections that felt flat to sections where you really had to get out of the saddle for a while. I prefer a more even climb.

Very fine variation on the other Mortirolos. Last week did the variant from Mazzo of around 1600 climbing points. With this climb from Tiolo you have the benefits of nice super steep sections of climbing, but with some rest before the next steep section comes. And still challenging enough I thought! And, an important point: much more beautiful views than on the Mortirolos from Mazzo! (Which I unfortunately didn't take any photos of 😆)

lovely scenic climb on mostly single lane road, great surface. unfortunately too much traffic (cars trucks motorbikes and groups of cyclists). some very steep ramps throughout. it was very hot today (27/6/25, climbing started at 11am, 30C) but there are water sources along the way to splash oneself. last 7 hairpins tell you the % until the next hairpin- only the "7" is bad at 13%. others are <10%.

Nice to mention; each kilometre is marked with the average and maximum gradient of the following kilometre and the remaining distance to the summit.

Halfway up, the climb gets meaner with strips of 15%. Often interspersed with less steep sections, but at the umpteenth wall your courage sometimes sinks in. A little further on, the road merges with the "real" Mortirolo. The first stretch is immediately tough. From the next hairpin, the remaining hairpins and distance to the summit are counted down. With the gradient up to the next bend, note; so not of the whole kilometre. This addition is relevant because the first sign reads 13%.... :)

At the top, nice view in the presence of cows, the cycling monument and toilet + water tap.

Delightful climb. I did this easy variant together with the Gavia today. I think I would not have reached the top from Mezzo. But this variant is easy to do, because there are some flatter parts now and then. Before the top, it is a bit of a push! But the climb is not very long, so all in all it was not too bad. However, I did feel it in my legs on the Gavia...
The road surface is perfect and the meandering through the woods is great cycling. Much better than the Bernina pass for example.

Heerlijke klim.

I enjoy it as the road condition was excellent and traffic was minimal. The Mortirolo is still hard even if this route is known as the "easy one". The gradient is varied so a 7% will have sections of 2% then 15%, for example. The last 5-6 km are brutal with one section going all the way up to 20%. The top has a toilet, a phone charging station and a selfie stand. No water sources on the top, and the closest is the restaurant 1 km before the summit (Refugio Antoniolo). The views are amazing especially from km 5-7 so stop on the way down and take pictures.

As an amateur cyclist I found it very hard. The road condition was excellent and traffic was minimal. The signage is also better than other passes. Signs start at every kilometre and then towards the last 2-3 km, the signs count the hairpins (hairpin 6,5 etc, or “tornante” in Italian). This side of the Mortirolo is still hard even if this route is known as the “easy one”. The gradient is varied so a 7% km will have sections of 2% then 15%, for example. On top of the toilet there is also a tap where you can fill up...Maybe that was not the case at the time

I rode it 2 times via Grosio in two days as part of Golazo's Pirata. Not immediately the steepest side, but quite tough. During the Granfondo I climbed at a steady pace, knowing that the Gavia and the Stelvio were still on the program. Despite that, only 4 minutes slower than the first time. Narrow, winding road among the greenery, so that the view to the surroundings was non-existent except for a few stretches... Too bad. Not exactly a climb I would do again.

Mortem is Latin for dead, dead after this climb is something quite normal.
From Mazzo slightly shorter and therefore steeper from Grosio / Tiolo is with 14 kilometers "to do".
You drive right past the start of this iconic climb, a small sign tells you to turn left (from Bormio) and 50 meters further a sign with the data: 14 kilometers, average 8.1% ! It starts quietly, and soon a few hairpin bends follow.
The valley is soon left behind and you enter a silent world which you know is going to hurt you.
The road is reasonable but not much more than 1 car wide. Step by step you continue and the top comes closer.
In the distance I see a church tower and I am looking forward to stretch my legs, but nothing is further from the truth. The road along the church is 17% not to be called a resting place.
There are no views and the road becomes narrower and narrower, turning into a goat path. The climb is inextricably linked to il Pirata, Marco Pantani, and although I ride a Wilier too, for me it is just hard work.
His monument can be found in the Mazzo climb, just before the junction with this climb. If you think you've done it now, you'll get another 3 km of climbing in double digits.
At the top a dead simple sign says: Passo della Foppa! Nothing Mortirolo, just fooled.
Descending to Mazzo is madness and I continue to the south side (Monno) to climb the Gavia next.
The Mortirolo belongs on your record, it is a terrible climb but you will be treated with respect by many Italians after your picture on the top. Ecco!

Ecco!

This side not as heavy as from Mazzo, but still very heavy.
