Rode it at 01.06.2024. A lot of the tunnel part (which is the steep part) is closed to traffic so we can enjoy it alone. Begins in the jungle and ends up in the Antarctica (It was tropical hot at the bottom and windy freezing cold at the top that day). The scenery changing in the early summer is really magnificent. My first real alp climb, so I can't give it 5 star cause no comparison yet. The first part of the descent is really steep and twisty. And the scenery entering Switzerland is also unforgettable.
A long but in my opinion magnificent climb along which a couple of 1/3 and 2/3 stops and as many topping up of the water bottles certainly helped to cope better with the fatigue. It is necessary to climb equipped with front and rear lights given the presence of various tunnels and, during the holiday period (end of August in my case) to pay attention to the vehicular traffic, in particular that with Italian number plates, as usual unfortunately little or no respect for cyclists! At the top, the panorama is splendid.
The climb up to Campodolcino is a continuous alternation of semi-flat stretches and short hairpin bends. After Campodolcino you start to climb, the section on the hairpin bends up to the tunnel to Madesimo is the worst, it is narrow but very scenic, after which the climb is slightly easier until the Montespluga dam where there is a nice flat section that allows you to take a break before the short final climb. If possible, it is much better to avoid (super busy with campers/cars and especially motorbikes with Italian bikers being very rude).
It’s a long and constant climb with 51 numbered hairpins, no segment is particularly difficult. Just before the top there is a lake which allows you to rest a bit before the last couple kilometers. There are many opportunities to refill your water bottles in the towns along the climb. There are several tunnels, none of which feels unsafe, but still a light is a must. If you want to skip a couple of tunnels and galleries you can take the detour through Isola. There is a significant amount of traffic but in general conductors are respectful and I never felt in danger. The views, when compared with those in other Alpine passes, are not remarkable.
Unmissable climb! Endless...we start off with 10 km in the cool forest above chiavenna, pedalable, leaving campodolcino an ordeal awaits us! 8 km at 9% average between narrow roads and tunnels! At the Montespluga dam, it will seem like entering paradise... but at the end of the lake 2 km to 7% will take you to the pass with marble legs! Very hard but a must! Go there!
Salita Imperdibile! Andateci!
Super recommended, especially on the day of the motor traffic closure! The 5 stars are for the pass, in traffic-free conditions. beyond this aspect, the rest only positive things: road surface, landscapes and directions. Well stocked with drinking fountains up to Campodolcino, then I didn't see any more. The day of the tour was extremely windy in the last 4km. Watch out for the last 2.5km at 7%, keep your energy up.
It's worth it!
I had already cycled the other side, the Splügen Pass, once and did not know that the other side would be even more beautiful.
In 2021, the Giro d'Italia was coming over this pass and when I saw the helicopter images I was immediately sold.
The climb can be divided into three parts.
The first part is about 10 km with an average gradient of 7%.
However, there are sections of 5 and sections of 12% in between.
Then comes the section with a series of 10 unusual hairpins, some in the rocks and some outside.
There was not much space here and they apparently had to be creative.
It is enjoying this construction and the way it was made.
When this part is done, the third and final stretch to the summit follows.
First a stretch along the reservoir and then a small finale to the summit.
A long and fairly tiring ascent, but priceless in terms of scenery, especially in the stretch from Prestone to the pass. Not to be missed is the panoramic footbridge at Pianazzo.
Beautiful and endless climb. Done in early November, I was able to enjoy the scenery and tunnels without traffic (no motorbikes) a few cars up to the junction for Madesimo, but nothing more.
The tunnels are mostly open and bright, some light up as they pass.
The climb starts off challenging but steady until Campodolcino, where there is a kilometre to catch your breath and loosen up your legs ahead of the toughest section, the one with the tunnels. The beauty of the panorama for long stretches makes you forget your fatigue. At the height of Boffalora the landscape turns from beautiful to magnificent, in November it seems as if I were pedalling on the moon. At this point I started to cramp up, but after about 1km you arrive at the lake and as far as the village of Montespluga you recover by going around the lake on the flat. After a couple of hairpin bends the cramps left me with no chance, but the view of the valley and the lake from above were a reward worth the effort. I'll be back in the spring, because I'm not sure I'll be able to enjoy it like this with the summer traffic.
Salita bellissima e infinita.
Good climb, long, but never too hard. Minimum 34/26, best 34/28. Use your strength well and recover in the straights for the last 2 km of the climb. Recommend lights at the front and back for the tunnels, which are in any case illuminated and never too long, pay close attention to the downhill tunnels, to avoid the more technical ones you can choose the Isola variant. Restaurants after the Montespluga lake.to be done at least 1 time!
Bella salita , lunga , ma mai eccessivamente dura. Minimo 34/26 , meglio 34/28.
Long climb and unfortunately often very busy. The beginning is immediately hard, it is worth it only for the arrival at the Spluga lake and for the bypass in Switzerland. Nice tour if you do the Julier, with return to Chiavenna from Maloja.
Salita lunga e purtroppo spesso molto trafficata.
Very cool climb, especially because it has an immense amount of hairpins and the road is sometimes very impressive by all the tunnels and sharp turns. Sometimes it seems like you can get lost - except that you can just follow the road of course. On the map the road looks straight, but if you zoom in you will see that it is a bit different. The tunnels are never long or dangerous, but take your lights with you.
You pass through some nice Italian villages and the views are beautiful. Recommended!
Aanrader!
