Constant ascent, but once you get out of the forest, the wind begins, which can be very annoying because it feels like you are not gaining altitude. One is always rewarded by perfect roads and very beautiful landscapes. Of the two sides, the Swiss side is definitely better.
Salita costante, ma una volta arrivati fuori dal bosco inizia il vento che può essere molto fastidioso perché sembra di non guadagnare quota. Si è sempre appagati da strada perfetta e paesaggi molto belli. Dei due versanti, quello svizzero è sicuramente migliore.
Superb climb, done during bikepacking trip to Italy. Because the gradient is quite even throughout the climb, it is a good going climb. You are rewarded with fantastic views while climbing. In August 2022, there were roadworks on a part of the second section with hairpin bends, which made you ride a bit unpaved. This side of the climb is really quite different from the Italian side. The Italian side has much tighter hairpins and more tunnels and galleries.
Schitterende klim, gedaan tijdens bikepacktrip naar Italië. Doordat het stijgingspercentage behoorlijk gelijkmatig is gedurende de hele klim, is het een goed lopende klim. Je wordt tijdens het klimmen beloond met een fantastisch uitzicht. In augustus 2022 waren er wegwerkzaamheden op een gedeelte van de tweede sectie met haarspeldbochten, waardoor je een stukje onverhard reed. Deze kant van de klim is echt heel anders dan de Italiaanse zijde. De Italiaanse kant kent veel krappere haarspeldbochten en meer tunnels en galerijen.
Fantastic ascent from Splügen that ends on the summit as a border crossing between Switzerland and Italy. Before reaching the top, you can enjoy a double series of hairpin bends, one at the beginning of the climb and one at the end. In between, you have to work hard, because although the climb never gets very steep, the percentages often fluctuate around 8％ and there is also a strong (head) wind. This climb is a must!
Fantastische beklimming vanuit Splügen die op de top eindigt als grensovergang tussen Zwitserland en Italië. Vooraleer je de top bereikt is het genieten van een dubbele serie haarspeldbochten, eentje in het begin van de klim en eentje op het einde. Tussendoor is het wel werken geblazen, want hoewel de klim nooit echt heel steil wordt, blijven de percentages toch vaak rond 8％ schommelen en staat er bovendien een stevige (tegen)wind. Een must deze klim!
Swiss north flank of this literally cross-border pass (cycled June 2022) is a lot shorter than the busy Italian side. Start in the small village of Splügen which, thanks to the first series of unnumbered hairpin bends through the forest flank, soon sinks deeper under you. This is followed by a fairly straight connection to the second series of bends in an open mountain scenery where, especially with the mountain wind blowing right on the nose, I got the impression of not making any progress.
However, the climb feels steady without extremes and you can get into the rhythm of the pedalling. Partly thanks to the Giro passage of 2021, there is perfect asphalt. It is best to stock up at the start because the route is uninhabited except for a Berghaus and at the pass/boundary there is nothing except for the abandoned customs building.
Indeed, you should definitely do this climb!
Zwitserse noordflank van deze letterlijk grensoverschrijdende pas ( gefietst Juni 2022) is een pak korter dan de drukke Italiaanse kant. Start in de kleine dorpskern van Splügen die, dankzij de eerste reeks van ongenummerde haarspeldbochten door de woudflank, vrij snel dieper onder je wegzakt. Nadien volgt in een open bergdecor een vrij recht verbindingsstuk naar de tweede reeks van bochten waar ik, zeker met de bergwind pal op de neus, de indruk kreeg niet vooruit te gaan.
Nochtans voelt de klim regelmatig aan zonder extremen en je kan goed in je trapritme komen. Mede dankzij de Giro doortocht van 2021 ligt er perfect asfalt. Bevoorraden doe je best aan de start want de route is op een Berghaus na onbewoond en op de pas/grensovergang is er naast het verlaten douane gebouw niets.
Inderdaad, deze klim absoluut doen!!!

Last piece is very spicy, a pretty long piece of straight where you have many hairpin bends in sight. Tough to climb but fantastic!

Laatste stuk is heel pittig, een behoorlijk lang stuk recht door waarbij je veel haarspeldbochten int het vooruit zicht hebt. Pittig om te beklimmen maar fantastisch!
