6/10 Fine climb, nothing crazy but nothing boring either. I didn't find it super busy and the road surface was good. I did make the mistake of riding via Strada Veia instead of the main road, had an incredibly steep section haha. If you (like me) 'm all the way down towards Bozen, make sure you have LIGHTING with you because there are very long and winding tunnels in here.... read more

Quiet climb up to the hamlet of Vallonga, then the middle section begins with an average gradient of 7%, with no particular jolts, and finally the last 3 km or so on falsopiano. The road surface is narrow in places, and when there is a lot of traffic you risk being in a queue with the cars.

Long fairly irregular climb. First part of the climb leads through built-up areas, but after 2 km the scenery becomes more rustic and beautiful. Fairly busy connecting road that climbs fairly irregularly. The last few kilometres are via a false flat paddling out to the pass. All in all, the beautiful views all around make it a nice climb anyway.

Lange redelijk onregelmatige klim.

I did this pass as part of a ride starting from Campitello di Fassa and reaching the Lago di Carezza, then back to Fedaia in the opposite direction.

The climb is fairly regular and does not have steep sections. There is a fair amount of traffic, although I probably had it easier than other climbers as I went quite early in the morning.

The views you can enjoy around you are still something!

Rather boring climb used mainly as a connection to the other valleys.

This climb is usually taken as the shortest way to get from the Fassa Valley to Bolsano. Consider it as a connection col, because the top passes of the Fassa Valley, the Pordoipass, Sella Pass and Fedaiapass are around the corner. The Karerpass is busy, but in terms of slope angle, doable. There are no peaks above 10%. The last kilometres are almost flat with beautiful views of the Latemar and Rosengarten massifs. On top of the summit, there are plenty of cafés and restaurants where you can recharge your batteries. However, if you boast that you have come to the Fassa Valley especially to do the Karerpass, the average cycling fanatic will call you crazy.

Coming from Canazei you leave the busy SS48, when leaving Pozza di Fassa, turn right up the valley turning through the touristy Vigo di Fassa. First few kilometres uphill with some short but steep sections (+10) winding through pine forests with sporadic views of the valley. Last 3,5 km. to the summit there is a slight climb on a plateau so you can change gears more often. At the pass height there is a restaurant (supply), a chair lift to the Latemar massif and apparently a beautiful view. Fog/rain and clouds were the spoilers.
(Thanks to Climbfinder-Google street view I've seen it all now!)
Distance to the top on blue rectangular road signs every kilometer.

I was still recovering from the Pordoi, not only mentally but also physically because it was very cold up there. After the descent the whole team together and on to Bolzano. According to the road book there is one more climb and then it's over.
The sun makes me slow, my thoughts are already at the finish and I don't really want to climb anymore.
But the Dolomites still have something in store for me and the Costalunga was the dessert.
From the village you turn into the climb and when I look at my trip summary it says a climb of about 4 km, well just sit down and finish. But it keeps on going and the legs start to protest more and more. You get higher and higher and the enjoyment turns into annoyance, just because you're mentally ready and want to finish with correct data and now you climb over 6 kilometers and it's still going up. Is the climb of 4 km still coming or did they make a mistake in the length?
Afterwards it was of course great and since it is voluntary you just have to enjoy but at that moment I wanted to stop.
At the top there is no view but just forests around you. We are back in Trentino and it is not far.
All in all this pass (also called the Karerpass) is beautiful, steep from the beginning but on the plateau you can breathe a little again. On to the next and what we did not know yet unfortunately in the valley a huge hailstorm and we had to flee into the woods for shelter. It is all in a days work in the mountains.

It is all in a days work in the mountains.
