This is the busiest route up to Haut-Koenigsbourg.
If you can, come before 10am, before the tourist rush (especially at weekends). It's less busy during the week.
The road is in excellent condition, with moderate gradients and a few flat areas.
Quiet road (at least it was today) although it was very busy at the top of the car park. By now, the signs per km are there and the climb runs nicely, but varies a bit.
Rustige weg (althans vandaag wel) hoewel het boven op de parkeerplaats heel druk was. De bordjes per km zijn er inmiddels wel en de klim loopt lekker, maar wisselt wel een beetje.
A nice, fairly steady climb.
Nice view at the top.
Belle montée assez régulièrement.
Belle vue en haut.
After having done Col du Petit Ballon and Col du Grand Ballon, I was on my way home and found this climb on Climbfinder. Since it had good reviews, I figured "why not" and gave it a try. In terms of the climb itself, I would say that it is indeed quite nice; Good road surface, route through the forest, gradients that allow for a fairly fast ascent. As opposed to more famous climbs, there were no signs on the side of the road marking your progress and/or the upcoming gradients, so I'm happy to have studied the profile a bit before ascending (Thank you Climbfinder!). In the end, the view at the top was certainly worthwhile, even though I did not have time to visit the chateau.
I would say that one major drawback to this climb is the traffic. Although I did it on a Tuesday in September (around 10am), there were cars/motorcycles/busses speeding past me the whole time (5-10 vehicles/km), so I recommend doing this climb early in the morning before the tourists start coming in. Also, as a matter of safety, I recommend wearing a light-coloured jersey as to increase visibility in the dark shades of the many trees!
