This is the most beautiful route up to Haut-Koenigsbourg.
A winding route between 6 and 7%, which begins in the vineyards and continues through the forest.
The road is in good condition. It is fairly busy with cars (a little less than via Kintzheim), as the village of Saint-Hippolyte attracts tourists (deservedly so!).
If you're only planning one ascent to HK, take this route!
The last two kilometres are very busy with tourists, especially the last 500 metres where it can be difficult to find your way. If you can, arrive before 10am, before the rush of visitors.

Climb up to see the castle and the beautiful view once you get to the top, nice road and not so much traffic on this side ... at least not as much as the other.

The climb starts between the vineyards, but soon goes into the woods and you have to love that. Once in a while, you can look out over the valley through the trees and that is breathtaking.

The average slope is 6.4 percent, but there is quite a bit of variation, so you can take a breather now and then.

The crowds were not too bad for a Sunday afternoon at the end of the summer holidays. Occasionally a car or a neurotic motorcyclist who thinks his bike will stall if he doesn't open up the throttle completely every 10 seconds. Nasty sound. But mostly you can just slog up on your own.

At the top, it is crowded. The castle there is a reconstruction of a medieval castle, which was made in the nineteen-nineties on the orders of Kaiser Wilhelm II, who was then briefly in charge of Alsace. It seems to have turned out quite well and many people want to see it for themselves.

Another funny thing is that there was a police car in front of the castle that was completely decorated with streamers and balloons. Apparently for a gendarme who was saying goodbye. I never thought that French policemen had a sense of humour.

For the descent, I took the route via Thannenkirch to Ribeauvillé. It is much quieter and the tarmac is quite good so you can whizz down.
