This is the climbing side in the 3 ballons cyclo.
After 15 km of not too steep climbing you can take a rest in a light descent.
The next kilometers on the so called routes des Cretes - which connects several summits of the Vosges - can be heavy, especially since the wind often blows hard here!

On 13-06-2019 from Kruth traffic little road surface good first 13 km forest after 14,5 km Le Markstein no forest more beautiful views but many descending cyclists (busy) above large crowds THE RIDE.
Last year I did it from Cernay and Willer-sur-Thur. Conclusion from Cernay I find the most beautiful first 9 km forest then some km descent, and WOW great views on the Grand Ballon so of there I must go, the top of the col is 90m below the top of the mountain. (This year 11 July in the Tour de France from Guebwiller)

We did the Grand Ballon from Kruth. Nice wide road. Gradual rise and when cycling calmly fine to climb. As Peter also says, for an inexperienced climber, easy to do. Nice starting point to get an idea about whether you want to do heavier climbs or not. So: on to the climbs from the other villages.

De Grand Ballon vanuit Kruth gedaan. Mooie brede weg.

As a climb it seems to me personally a bit long and boring, but as a descent it is more than perfect! Wide asphalt road with little traffic, with occasional magnificent views. And because there are no sharp or dangerous turns, even at high speed you have time to enjoy it.

For the inexperienced climber a great route to get to the Grand Ballon. The road surface was not too bad as stated here. The parts of 5% and lower give some air and the descent from Le Markstein (after 15km) gives you some pace so that you only have to work hard for the last, steep, part at 20km.
