As already mentioned by the other reviews, initially quite busy road (use the cycle path), traffic does decrease after Linthal. The road itself is in good condition. The climb itself can be divided into three parts, an easy start, a slightly heavier section up to Le Markstein and then a lighter section up to the grand Ballon. Is a nice alternative to climb the grand Ballon via a different route.

In April, Le Grand Ballon "FERMÉ". Started the climb anyway, as you have to go via Le Markstein which was open at the time. From Le Markstein continue to Le Grand Ballon without any traffic due to icy road conditions.
Did the last part of the Grand Ballon also in Summertime from Route des Crêtes, which I would absolutely recommend to cycle completely.

Although long, this pass is relatively easy for my size (over 100kg). Often shaded, the traffic is acceptable (climbed on a Thursday morning in July).

A nice and long climb. Don't mistake the altitude profile as there are quite a few challenging kilometres in it. The road surface is top notch but there is also quite a bit of traffic unfortunately. You ride through a nice wooded area and at one point see a beautiful lake. From Le Markstein onwards, it's not much more.

The first kilometres there is unfortunately quite a lot of traffic, but fortunately there are some kilometres with a nice, parallel cycle path!
When the cycle path disappears, it is unpleasant for a while, the quality of the road surface is reduced by lots of pebbles, the cars're driving fast....
Fortunately this is not for the whole climb, after a while the inferior road surface changed to new asphalt, and suddenly all the cars're gone!
From here on, you actually start climbing.
From le Markstein you get above the tree line and it flattens out: beautiful, but a lot colder, so be sure to bring a jacket or windstopper!
From there, there is a bit more traffic again, but you just have to take it.
The last kilometre is uphill again until the cafés, where you should definitely have a coffee, or a giant chocolat chaud!
For the competitive Strava riders: the line is slightly beyond the cafés, so head there first before having a coffee.
I descended towards Cernay, nice descent, but watch out for goats and some turns with cobblestones!

I did this climb in summer 2022 from Guebwiller (5 km before Buhl with a.o. hypermarché and cycle shop) on the tandem. The D430 up to Lautenbach is annoyingly busy, but you can take a cycle path at sections or go parallel through the villages. After Lautenbach (km 10), the road was almost deserted. You ride here mainly through forest and it goes up to eight percent. At the reservoir at km 14, you can take a break. There you can see the balloon in the distance above you for inspiration. After another 2 km climbing at 7 percent you pass the col de Markstein at 1183 m (here are restaurants and a lot of people) and turn left into the D431G. That road is a bit busier, but pointless and almost flat and offers beautiful views. Just before the balloon, after the Col du Haag, it is still steep for a kilometre, but then you are almost there. Here a lot of cyclists, hikers, coaches and 2 restaurants. Tip: walk 600 metres to the top of the Grand Ballon (and therefore of the Vosges). I also cycled back to Guebwiller. I noticed that the D430 downwards suffers more from bad stretches of tarmac, so you have to be careful sometimes.

16 July 2018 I climbed the Grand Ballon from Buhl. Long climb with a flat approach on a busy road, but gradually the thumbscrews are tightened. Especially when you have climbed the Grand Ballon twice already. The middle part is steeper than indicated and from Le Markstein it goes up false flat. 2 km before the summit it is hard work again. The road surface is good.
