Nice col to start with in this region. It is certainly not the toughest col and that can also have advantages. On the flatter parts you can catch your breath.
You come through three ski resorts. The first two you're so through, the third is quite a climb, is the longest and it can be busy in the summer with people there.
Beautiful views and good asphalt.

The Col de Vars is a beautiful and long climb. It's a bit snowed under next to the Izoard, Agnel, Bonette and Galibier, but secretly, this is quite a tough col. The road surface is good (great descent!), the views on the Ecrins massif great. The climb is certainly by its length a pretty tough climb, without being too steep anywhere. A must to do. Especially because of the wonderful descent (or had I already said ;-) ).

A pass which is divided in 2 parts with a break in between : it's great ! A long quiet climb and at the same time we exceed 1000m of D+, what a bonus!

Nice climb that allows you to switch to Ubaye and make a nice loop or to go back down to Guillestre with a magnificent view on the Ecrins.
Although it is used depending on the season, the climb is very pleasant and can be done at the train with inclines that vary as the climb goes on.
The pass is open all year round for the hardy.

Nice and varied climb. Good to do also for the heavier built cyclists. From the start in Guillestre directly on the move. The middle part is less easy than the profile suggests, and the poles along the road give a different %. After the usual bends through woods and meadows the views take over. Via a village and a ski resort the trail leads to alpine meadows with breathtaking views. The last kilometers are perfect tarmac uphill where the owners of the local refuge serve a delicious cup of coffee with a homemade cake. The descent is fast. In May it was chilly, so bring your jacket :-)

A wonderful day on the bike. A very nice climb to do with people who want to try their first real col. No problems with the weather here, like on the Agnel. Take your party with you the first few kilometers, otherwise they might get scared of the impact of the gradient. After 6 k it gets easier, enjoy the climbing in the Alps.

Descending is a dream.

Enjoy,

Gr eric

Enjoy,

Gr eric

It's a nice climb I've made several times. And I have a love/hate relationship. One time I like this climb, the next time I hate it and so on. The climb is maybe easier than the big boys in the neighbourhood. But make no mistake about it. Fortunately, after the ski area is actually finished. Also, this is one of the few nice bike cols that is open all year.
