The height gain is comparable with the Stelvio pass. It is only 2,5 times more steep in general, and the steepest parts are also 2,5 times more steep. Climb taken by MTB, extremely difficult, the Stelvio is a bland false flat in comparison, with walls at 25/30%, you have no time to catch your breath, absurdly difficult.I recommend it as a personal test.
I won't add anything that hasn't already been said: a real ordeal, a torture, the cyclist's hell! Having done it last week, I can safely say that the Mortirolo (from the deck) is a pleasant false flat in comparison!
There is nothing on this climb that will alleviate your suffering: not a resting place, not an acceptable tarmac and not even any kind of breathtaking view... only the stunned faces of the very few cars that you pass give a little satisfaction!
I found two water points but didn't drink from them for fear that it wasn't drinkable. Ascent done with MTB with 34 x 10-52 gears (practically all done with 52).
The only advice if you are going to face this ordeal is to use insect repellent because you will be constantly chased by horseflies.
That said... a must-do once in a lifetime... but not one more!
I'll start immediately by saying that this is not a climb for bdc, not even for gravel, not even for mtb. It is a climb for e-bikes, but again, you will use up all your battery. I did this climb on a muscular mtb knowing it was very hard, so I fitted a 30-tooth crown with a 51 sprocket for the occasion.
Carried out in July 2022, I'll premise that I have good basic training and I'm very light, h 185cm by 70kg.
When you think it's hard, it's still a long way from what awaits you. There are continuous ramps over 25% but also 30%, very few bits to rest, I cycled it all but stopped about ten times to catch my breath, the alternative was to die, even of heat. What makes it extreme is not only the gradient but also the length and the significant elevation gain. In several sections there are two strips of concrete, if you accidentally get out, you have no hope of continuing. The restarts are very hard, real balancing acts. Do I recommend it? Yes, but only once in a lifetime. It's those things that are so ignorant that they almost make sense. The ground must be dry; if it is wet, the rear wheel will skid even if you are sitting. In the last third of the climb the gradients drop sharply, so the overall average as well; this is misleading, it will lead you to believe that it is basically doable. This is not the case. The first two thirds average well over 20%. Having arrived at the pond with a bench and table, I continued on and shortly afterwards took single track to the left through the forest to a clearing with a hut. From there starts a semi-paved descent that is incredibly steep (worse than our climb), the XT 4 pistons suffered! At the bottom it rejoins the uphill route. So be careful, on the way up, when you find the fork, go straight ahead leaving this other road to the left (it looks inviting but it's worse than ours) I have no idea how long it took...we just have to watch the times, here you just have to survive. Best wishes.
Auguri.

The climb is totally undiscovered, but this will change soon due to the GCN-video about this climb. However, even at the time of writing 9 months after the video, I am only the 22nd cyclist on Strava to tackle this (but it was still spring, and cold at the top).
The steep parts feel like a staircase without the steps, it is totally crazy. I had to walk these parts, but if you’re stronger you may be able to sit down and ride, but you’ll need a decent gravelbike or mountainbike with super low gears. I rode a 32 front and 51 in the back (so a 0,61 transmission). Make sure your bike has brake pads that will last for the downhill, because you’ll need them.
The road surface is relatively smooth tarmac, with the occasional gutters inbetween. But further up there are gravel and cobbled segments (see photo).
You can park your car across the road in the village of Esine, and you don’t need to bring loads of water, as there are a few taps en route with super cold fresh mountain water.
If you are still willing to go after knowing all this, you may be a masochist like me :)
So drag your loved ones to Lombardia next holiday to conquer this one (!!)
Lovely video from the well-known GCN about how tough this climb is, actually making an attempt ;-)

It is compulsory to give a star rating with a review. Now I haven't climbed this one myself but "Can't miss" may actually be the only correct rating for the toughest climb there is :-)
