Myrdal from Flåm

Did this trip yesterday. First half is on paved road. A couple of hills but generally speaking flat. From the second time you cross the railroad track it is gravel only, but well paved. From 17 to 19 km is the real hard part. 17 ％ average climb, parts are steeper. Some loose gravel because of riders braking down.

Tough but absolutely doable.

A really enjoyable climb. Gravel bike only though. The Myredal switchbacks are 17.7％ average for about 250m vertical, so gear your bike accordingly. Be prepared for tourist traffic - very few people ride from Flåm to Haugastøl, so in climbing it, you'll be riding against 95％ of the traffic.

I would say approx two thirds of the ride is on tarmac. Running alongside the river and railway, it is a lovely ride. The gravel kicks in at a railway crossing but is nice and compact. A lit tunnel ( amazing in the middle of no where), past the end of the zipp wire and then the fun begins! Hairpins almost all the way to the railway station. The surface looked to be recently done with white gravel. This section is brutal! I had a gravel bike with 35 width tyres and about 30psi. There is no way a road bike on road tyres is getting up this climb! Coffee shop in the station. Decent is fab but you have to be very careful on those hairpins! A number of people take the train up and come down on hired bikes. Some are not in control!
