If you go down the Col de la Croix de Fer or the Col du Glandon towards Allemond, you have to pay for this very tough ascent, which was the case for me during an ARO and two Vaujany tours in the 90s.
But this ascent has only existed since 1989, when a landslide swept away a section of the road, which then passed much higher up. Following the landslide, the road was re-routed so as to avoid the landslide from below. Hence the climb, which was necessary to reach the part of the road that remained intact.
As it follows the ascent of the Grand'Maison dam (which did not exist before the dam was built), the descent of the Glandon/Croix de Fer on this side is one of the least relaxing ever! :-)
