The road surface has been renewed fairly recently, now fine to drive on.

Nice climb, with a very steep section after Reichental

I had forgotten to upload the pictures with my previous post. I will now upload them separately.

This Kaltenbronn is also called the Hohloh (col) on some sites. And on top of it there is a sign "Schwarzmiss" with the height 933. But the Hohloh Tower is near the Holoh mountain with a height of 984 meters, and therefore one of the highest peaks in the Northern Black Forest. If you are on top of the regular road (with the sign), just turn into a car-free street and 1 km further you are at the Tower and another 50 meters higher.
I must emphasize Sjors' remark. Especially from Reichenbach onwards, the road surface is EXTREMELY bad. In the climb you have not so'n trouble. But I have never done such a dangerous descent. It is actually irresponsible. Pay special attention in the curves when descending. Because you come in such a obscure corner, and suddenly you see only deep pits in the road. Even at low speed, the chain spontaneously flew off the sprocket because of the roaring of the bike over the pits. So watch out!
Only the upper part of the climb is covered with nice asphalt (see picture). On the lower and middle part of the climb there are frequent signs with "Strassschade". That's also solving a problem of course :o)
There is also a lot of traffic on the track. But they usually keep it very safe for the slower cyclists.
If the tarmac was better and there was less traffic, this would be a nice climb technically. Also the turns and hairpins break up the monotony nicely.

Description does not quite match reality. Already in Reichentall it goes 10% after which the Garmin shows >10% for the next 4km. The first part of the road is terrible, especially in the descent. It appears that they do this part every year, so hang in there. Last 4 to 5 km are good to do and it flattens out and you can enjoy the beautiful view, which is very rewarding. The real top is hard to recognize by the way.

Kaltenbronn is a challenging ascent. For this type of climbing, we recommend mountain gearing, specifically a compact system. Remember that a smooth cadence is always more efficient!
