Avoid. The road surface is not a gravel section followed by paved. It’s loose gravel on a paved layer the whole way up. In the UK we call it “surface dressing”, where gravel is layered on the surface, and the weight of cars presses the gravel together to form a hard layer. However on this road there is so little traffic it remains loose and deep. That’s not the worst part of this climb. In wet weather, the road is closed to traffic. In two places, streams flow across the road, which presumably get swollen. The road is also strewn with boulders, which the rain must wash out from the overhanging cliff. The cliffs don’t look very well supported. Given the poor surface, and the potentially hazardous nature of the road, I recommend to avoid this climb.
What a lovely walk!
The gravel road for the first two kilometres has just deteriorated again with the recent storms at the end of August.
It's still passable for a road bike and the gradient is never severe.
This path offers a lesson in geology and plate tectonics. The folding of the layers on the right and left is spectacular.
A pretty waterfall crosses the road.
Seven patous (yes, 7!) watch over a herd and as the fence is neither high nor solid, we strongly advise you to get off the bike for a hundred metres or so.
Not a dull moment. Yes, really, this little climb is very pleasant.
I'm hesitating between three and four stars.
