Left at 10.00 am to avoid the worst heat. The first part to Brand is very busy with cars. Then it gets better, until the parking lot at the gondola. This climb was harder than I expected! The average percentage is deceptive. You have a tough start, then an easy middle section and finally another tough section to the 'top'. The tarmac is good and the views are beautiful!... read more

Between Bludenz and Brand, the road is quite busy (although perfectly doable), but that part can be bypassed by taking a cycle path uphill from Bürs. This is fully asphalted and runs quietly through an alternation of dense forests, Alpine meadows, stray chalets and mountain streams. Be aware that this path is often wet if it has rained recently and also has a couple of short steep descents, one of which has a fence in the middle of the road.

In Brand, you rejoin the main road, which is fairly flat here. After the village, the climb begins. The road narrows and winds uphill with beautiful views of the mountains around you. There is a fair amount of traffic though: in the morning mostly people driving up, but when I drove up (at 3 o'clock 'noon) mostly people were going down.

The summit is not that special with a large car park and the starting point of the cable car to Lünersee. What is special again is the descent. Beautifully smooth and clear turns that also slope inwards so you can take them at speed. Just make sure you don't get stuck behind the line bus. From Brand, the descent is wider and also has two tunnels (lights are recommended). All in all, enjoy going up and down.

Around 9 o'clock in the morning in late June, we started this climb. The initial section is nice climbing for several kilometres, followed by an easy middle section. The traffic wasn't too bad for me. Due to the wide track, there is also plenty of space. A great start!

The last six kilometres, after passing Brand, the road gets narrower and steeper. The climbing gets tougher, but also more beautiful! Passing through buses/cars's can be a bit tricky. Fortunately, the traffic was not too bad and I was able to pedal away the tougher kilometres mostly in silence. However, the Lünersee at the summit is a really popular destination. So I can imagine that in high season, this road is overflowing with traffic.

All in all, a nice climb to do! However, you do finish at a car park where the lift goes up to Lünersee. So not really a wow feeling at the top unfortunately.

Het verkeer viel me alles mee.

A nice variant to bypass the first busy stretch between Bludenz and Brand is via Bürs (Felbaweg). You then arrive at Brand via Galaferda. This variant is a footpath between the forests, about 3 metres wide, only accessible to hikers/cyclists and fully asphalted.
The intermediate section in Brand is quite manageable.
The last 6 km, from the Palüdbhan, are tough. Very often 9% and more. For me, the traffic was not too bad.
When the bus passes is sometimes narrow though :-)

Sheltered climb on good tarmac which you can actually divide into two parts, with a part false flat in between. The first part from Bürs you climb on a winding road through the forest to Bürserberg. Until the winter sports village of Brand, the road still undulates a bit and you ride through two short tunnels. After the village, the road becomes narrower and the last five kilometres to the end of the valley are the toughest of the climb.

You end up at the parking lot at the base station of the Lünerseebahn. This cable car to the Lünersee was renewed in 2019 and is incredibly popular. During the day in high season there are therefore traffic jams with (turning) cars's on the last part of the road. In 2020 I did the climb 'early morning (left at 7am from Bürs) and then it is still wonderfully quiet, but in the descent already had a few "near misses" with oncoming tourists. Because the road is so narrow, I would not recommend driving up or down here during the day.
