The Valstrona is an area rich in opportunities for outdoor sports enthusiasts and, despite its "difficult" orography and the "scarcity" of asphalted roads to enjoy the almost unspoilt beauty of the area, it offers "climbers" real "gems" that also require a certain amount of preparation: Alpe Quaggione from Germagno, Alpe Loccia from Prelo and Chesio and Alpe Colle from Luzzogno (until the end of the asphalt road).
The ascent to Alpe Loccia begins in Prelo by taking the right-hand fork from the SP road to Valstrona. Follow the road to Loreglia/Chesio and after a couple of kilometres at the 8% junction for Chesio turn left. A first wall begins with gradients close to 15% until almost reaching the village of Chesio, where the road flattens out from the church to the Temple of Victory (in fact you lose considerable height) and after a double right-left bend you reach the entrance to the consortium road on the right, while going straight on you could reach Luzzogno even if only by mountain bike.
Here begins the ordeal: 3.7 km with an average gradient of 11.6% and a total difference in altitude of 421m d+. Basically the usual tarmac mule track that provides access to the pastures and Alpe Loccia. You immediately start with a nice wall at over 15% and then alternate stretches always close to 15% with more manageable ones. You are always immersed in the forest and it is hard to catch a glimpse of the panorama towards Omegna (assuming you have the lucidity to look down into the valley. The small road barely allows a car to pass (should one have the misfortune to cross it) and after thunderstorms or in the autumn season could be invaded by debris and leaves that make the ascent even more epic. After 1.5km at a hairpin bend to the right begins what I call the "hellish" 0.5km of enjoyment at 16.4% average! The road stands upright and the uneven asphalt seems to brush against your nose! It is said elsewhere that the maximum gradient is over 20% and passing this section unscathed allows you to come out of the forest and begin to savour the mirage of the end of the climb. The climb continues hard, however, until it reaches a flat section where the asphalt road ends for about 200m (very practicable by bike) and then picks up again at the last wall before reaching the Alpe car park at 1100m: there is a drinking fountain (it was closed during the tour) and the path that leads to the Alpe houses. It seems pleonastic to write that the descent is also very dangerous due to the presence of rather large drainage channels and the absence of protection in many sections.

A really demanding climb, especially in the final part where you never catch your breath on ramps that follow one after the other with peaks over 25%

The climb to Chesio is pleasant on some switchbacks. Chesio is an attractive Italian mountain village. After Chesio there is little traffic but the village at the end of the climb: Alpe Loccia, is popular and the road is in poor condition and narrow so crossing vehicles is not ideal. Note: the road to Luzzogno is not surfaced. After the junction the climb gets serious. The road surface is not great and the climb is a series of steep ramps then flats that are not visible in the profile. On the second half there is a kilometer of 17% which is very difficult. The climb is in woods until the end where there is a view point over the mountains. You can continue on a dirt road to Alpe Loccia or further on a mountainbike.
