In mei 2022 de Stelvio gefietst vanaf Bormio. Geluk dat de pas al geopend was, dat varieert ieder jaar.
Mooie maar lange tocht, afgedaald naar Prato met de fiets.
Kleding is erg lastig, te warm in Bormio, koud op de top, onderweg nog een buitje gehad.
Erg gaaf en de moeite waard, weg is goed te rijden.

1- Don't consider it so challenging, it's more about the altitude than the climb. If you have a good acclimatisation you are fine.

Ridden on a Thursday afternoon in September. It was raining cats and dogs in the morning, but eventually it turned to light rain and I went for it anyway. After a good km the rain stopped and the sun came out now and then, lovely! The climb is great, even the last few km went very well. I would have liked to ride the other side, but it was too late in the day for that.
Gereden op een donderdagmiddag in september. 's Ochtends regende het pijpenstelen, uiteindelijk werd het lichte regen en ging ik er toch maar voor. Na een goede km stopte de regen en kwam de zon zo nu en dan tevoorschijn, heerlijk! De klim is prima te rijden, ik vond zelfs de laatste paar km erg lekker gaan. Had de andere zijde nog willen meepakken maar daar was het intussen te laat op de dag voor geworden.
Going up via Bormio. It went quite smoothly until the last three km. Completely empty and when you suddenly see Hirchi flying by in the valley, your courage sinks into your boots. Top climb you must have done.
Naar boven via Bormio. Ging vrij vlot tot de laatste drie km. Compleet leeggereden en als je in de vallei ineens Hirchi ziet voorbij vliegen zakt de moed in je schoenen. Top klim moet je gedaan hebben.
This mountain we cycled with friends. I thought it was a nice even climb.
At the top we met the world champion Allaphilpe.
Deze berg met vrienden mogen fietsen. ik vond het mooie egale klim. wel druk met motoren.

This one can be crossed off the Bucket List. Must do for cycling enthusiasts. Heavy but beautiful. Excellent Bianchi rented at the foot of the climb.

Challenging, raw and rugged. A must do - but be prepared with kit to keep you warm on the descent.
I went early to avoid the traffic which made the climb and decent enjoyable.
The scenery is beautiful. And the first 1200VM I rode strong. It was after the respite of the meadow section that I felt the challenge of the mountain. I think it was the combination of fatigue and elevation that dramatically slowed my ascent on the final 300VM. Many accounts of the climb have remarked on this being the hardest section of the climb.
I got very, very cold on the way down (despite rugging up), so be sure to have warm enough kit in case the weather turns (fingered gloves, a neck warmer/facemask, windproof jacket, leggings, arm warmers).
Beautiful climb in a majestic setting. A long, semi-flat stretch allows for some well-deserved rest.
At the pass, there is a hustle and bustle of people, which spoils the poetry a little, but only a little. To be done at all costs.

I climbed up from Bormio. Beautiful route, challenging. A certain amount of training is necessary. But at the top the show is exceptional. Always in company of otheri ciclisti colleagues. It cannot miss in the palmares of an amateur cyclist. The climb from Prato is equally beautiful but more challenging.
Sono salito da Bormio. Percorso bellissimo, impegnativo. E’ necessario un certo allenamento. Ma in vetta lo spettacolo è eccezionale. Sempre in compagnia di altroi colleghi ciclisti. Non può mancare nel palmares di un ciclista amatoriale. La salita da Prato è ugualmente bella ma più impegnativa.

Done in a drive from Prato, first up that side, then down this one and back up again. There is a traffic light in the climb for a tunnel, because there is only 1 side at a time cars's fit through. There it is hoping for green or else just by red if you do not want to stop, we were lucky with green. The 'flat'piece challenges you to drive 20+ but you are soon done with that when those hairpins start again. Last 3km, from the exit to the umbrail is the toughest. Nice climb, more variety than the Prato side, but that one remains my favorite because of the last 30 turns.
Gedaan in een rit vanuit Prato, eerst die kant naar boven, dan deze naar beneden en weer terug naar boven. Er zit een verkeerslicht in de klim voor een tunnel, omdat er maar van 1 kant tegelijk auto's doorheen passen. Daar is het hopen op groen of anders gewoon door rood als je niet wilt stoppen, wij hadden geluk met groen. Het 'vlakke' stuk daagt je uit om 20+ te gaan rijden maar daar ben je al gauw klaar mee wanneer die haarspelden weer beginnen. Laatste 3km, vanaf de afslag naar de umbrail is het het zwaarst. Mooie klim, meer afwisseling dan de Prato kant, maar die blijft toch mijn favoriet door de laatste 30 bochten.
I rented a Focus Izalco road bike in Bormio (Spot-On) for €60 and started the ascent, which was my first cycling col ever without any preparation, so had to stop a few times... Great road, great views, beautiful hairpins, so many other fellow cyclists. Unfortunately also many cars and motorbikes turning it a bit into a circus. On a few summer days, no cars or motorbikes are allowed on the climb: check the information from Enjoy Stelvio National Park. Plenty food and drinks options on the top, as well as souvenirs and cycling gear. Take a jacket for the downhill. There are professional photographers along the road so you can order your souvenir online (fotostelvio.com or stelviofoto.com). In hindsight this was a difficult climb to start with and I recommend to try out Bormio 2000, Torri di Fraele and Lago di Cancano, or Gavia first.
I rode up the Stelvio via the Bormio side and then descended 30 hairpins in the direction of Prato and back to the top. Although the Prato side is the most famous because of its hairpin bends, I found the Bormio side just a bit nicer, more variety in the landscape. I rode it in the weekend and then it is a crowd of motorcycles and sports car's, but really disturbing was not, it is a bit part of this mountain. And if you then climb the Gavia a day later, the contrast is twice as great with the absolute tranquility that you have there. But both are iconic climbs that you just have to climb once.
Stelvio opgereden via de Bormio kant om vervolgens 30 haarspeldbochten af te dalen in de richting van Prato en zo terug naar de top. Hoewel de Prato kant natuurlijk het bekendste is omwille van z'n haarspeldbochten, vond ik de Bormio-kant precies nog net iets mooier, meer afwisseling in het landschap. Ben hem opgereden in het weekend en dan is het een drukte van motoren en sportauto's, maar echt storend was het nu ook niet, het hoort er een beetje bij op deze berg. En als je dan een dag later de Gavia beklimt dan is het contrast dubbel zo groot met de absolute rust die je daar hebt. Maar beide zijn iconische beklimmingen die gewoon eens beklommen moet hebben.
Although iconic and a must-do for every cyclist, this one disappointed me. Especially the crowds on the road irritated me immensely. Give me the lesser known, but beautiful and quiet Umbrailpass, which in fact ends a few kilometers below the top of the Stelvio.
Hoewel iconisch en een must-do voor elke fietsliefhebber, viel voor mij deze toch tegen. Vooral de drukte onderweg irriteerde me mateloos. Geef mij maar de minder bekende, maar prachtige en rustige Umbrailpas, die in feite eindigt enkele kilometers onder de top van de Stelvio.
This is the only reason I cam to Bormio... a fantastic climb on a beautiful day. Not a tough climb as far as percentages go, but long. Best approach is to settle in to a pace you're comfortable with, and enjoy the views on a lovely road surface.
The climb starts immediately from Bormio and you're spoilt for views all the way up. As you get to the top, there's a little plateau before the official pass, where it's very busy with all sorts in the shops and the restaurants. But stunning views on both sides of the pass. This is a must.
Stelvio, for many a hell, for others an ultimate challenge. For me it was paradise.
From Bormio it was only the second time up, already 2 times from Santa Maria and 4 times from Prato.
A cycling buddy of mine calls Bormio the most beautiful side; after this time I have to agree with him.
Never really hard and yet a killer for the legs. When you leave Bormio you don't realize you are going around the corner to a huge valley which is a protected nature park for a reason. The tunnels lead you through the mountains and the landscape changes step by step.
The "flat"traverse challenges you but you see in the distance what is still to come and so you hold back a little.
The 40 bends give 40 x rest looking back you see where you came from, you forget that the last 3 km still ask a lot of you, that those 10 bends will make you small.
Snow, melting water, wind and sun, during an ascent of the Stelvio you can feel 4 seasons pass by. And at the top it can be dark, wet, cold and especially windy. But still everyone is happy when he is there, you feel like a king, a real Cima Coppi.
The first time I was surprised that there was a smell of Bratwurst at the top, now it is the reason why I go!
Each time a sandwich as a reward, a chat with the wurst king and then flaming down.
When I go back to the Netherlands I drive up the Stelvio at 05:00, alone; no motorcycles, cars or even cyclists..... What a beauty and what a peace; the Stelvio has many faces and you will never experience them all.

Vanuit Bormio was het pas de tweede keer omhoog, reeds 2 x vanuit Santa Maria en 4 x vanuit Prato geklommen.
Een fietsmaat van me noemt Bormio de mooiste kant; na deze keer moet ik hem schoorvoetend gelijk gaan geven.
Nooit echt zwaar en toch een killer voor de benen. Als je in Bormio wegrijd besef je niet dat je om de bocht gaat naar een enorm dal wat niet voor niets een beschermd natuurpark is. De tunnels leiden je door de bergen en het landschap veranderd stap voor stap.
De "vlakke" traverse daagt je uit maar je ziet in de verte wat er nog gaat komen en dus houd je je een beetje in.
De 40 bochten geven 40 x rust terugkijkende zie je pas waar je vandaan komt, je vergeet even dat de laatste 3 kilometer nog veel van je vragen, dat die 10 bochten je nog klein gaan krijgen.
Sneeuw, smeltwater, wind en zon, tijdens een beklimming van de Stelvio kun je zomaar 4 jaargetijden langs voelen komen. En boven kan het donker, nat, koud en vooral winderig zijn. Maar toch is iedereen blij als hij er is je voelt je een koning een echte Cima Coppi.
De erste keer was ik verbaasd dat er een lucht van Bratwurst op je afkwam op de top, nu is het de reden waarom ik ga!
Iedere keer een broodje als beloning een praatje met de wurstkoning en daarna vlammen naar beneden.
Als ik terug ga naar Nederland rijd ik om 05.00 uur de Stelvio op, alleen; geen motoren, auto's of zelfs fietsers..... Wat een pracht wat een rust; de Stelvio heeft vele gezichten en je gaat ze nooit allemaal beleven.

On this side, the Stelvio is a bit shorter, there are less countdown hairpins with altitude indicators and the route climbs more gradually up the valley of the river Braulio.
Steep sections of 7-10％ with some short outliers alternate with slightly less climbing sections.
After the five half-open galleries and tunnels that are damp narrow and dark you climb via a nice series of hairpin bends along the beautiful Braulio waterfall. Followed by a long right turning "relatively" flat part where you also pass the San Rainieri church and the war monument.
The sting of the climb is in the end because just before the Umbrailpass (from St.Maria- CH) will join the road, the 10 hairpins to the top start which in the last kilometers flirt with the 10％.
At the pass crossing, because of the crowds that usually exist, there is a "fairground atmosphere" which does not outweigh the euphoria that always overwhelms me when I reach the top. Even though it is not the first time.
You can avoid the crowds by starting early on a weekday. Bringing extra clothes can never hurt, even in summer.
Different than the fantastic Prad side but also along this side a fabulous monument to bike / crawl on!
Eén van de mooiste en bij fietsfanaten beroemdste Europese bergpassen op gefietst vanuit Bormio.
Langs deze zijde is de Stelvio iets korter, zijn er minder aftellende haarspeldbochten met hoogteaanduiding en klimt de route ook meer trapsgewijs het dal van de rivier de Braulio op.
Steile stukken van 7-10％ met enkele korte uitschieters wisselen af met iets minder klimmende stroken.
Na de vijf halfopen galerijen en tunnels die vochtig smal en donker zijn klim je via een mooie reeks haarspeldbochten langs de prachtige Braulio waterval. Gevolgd door een lang rechtsdraaiend "relatief" vlak stuk waar je ook het San Rainierikerkje en het oorlogsmonument voorbijfietst.
Het venijn van de klim zit hem in het slot want even voordat de Umbrailpas (uit St.Maria- CH) de weg zal vervoegen starten de 10 haarspeldbochten naar de top die in de laatste kilometers flirten met de 10％ .
Op de pasovergang hangt er door de drukte die er meestal is een "kermissfeer" die niet opweegt tegen de euforie die mij steeds overvalt bij het bereiken van de top. Ook al is het niet de eerste keer.
De drukte kan je ontlopen door vroeg te starten op een weekdag. Extra kledij meenemen kan nooit kwaad zelf in de zomer.
Anders dan de fantastische Prad zijde maar toch ook langs deze zijde een fabelachtig monument om op te fietsen/kruipen!!!
Great climb, long but never too steep. Already climbed 3 times and each time I had to curse the last 3 km, they are the toughest of the whole climb. Around km 15 you get a flatter part. Here you can choose between accelerating or catching your breath :-). The descent is very nice, wide roads, good overview. Only in the tunnels watch out!
Zalige klim, lang maar nooit overdreven stijl. Reeds 3x beklommen en elke keer opnieuw moeten vloeken op de laatste 3km, deze zijn de zwaarste van de hele klim. Rond km 15 krijg je een vlakker stuk. Hier kan je kiezen tussen gas geven of even op adem komen :-). De afdaling is heel leuk, brede wegen, goed overzicht. Enkel in de tunneltjes goed opletten!
I climbed the stelvio at the end of august last year. If you are a cycling enthusiast and have endurance and can maintain an effort for several hours you will love this climb. It is high but the side via bormio you can easily handle on endurance. If you stay under your limit you will love the climb. The only thing you MUST take into account is that for some villages the climb is the only access road, so keep in mind the traffic.
Ik heb de stelvio beklommen eind augustus vorig jaar. Als je als wielerliefhebber uithouding hebt en een inspanning enkele uren kunt volhouden ga je van deze beklimming houden. Het is hoog maar de kant via bormio kun je gemakkelijk aan op uithouding. Als je onder je limiet bljft ga je van de beklimming houden. Het enige waar je MOET mee rekening houden is dat de beklimming voor sommige dorpen de enige toegangsweg is, dus hou rekening met het verkeer.
Passo Stelvio, the classic side from Bormio. The village breathes sports; skiing and skating in the winter and cycling in the summer.
In the village is a large camper parking, I think perhaps the best place to stand in the world, 360 degree mountain view.
Bormio is the starting point of not only the Stelvio but also the Gavia and not much further, the Mortirolo is waiting for its prey. With the Bernina and Lago Cancano around the corner and Bormio 2000 in the backyard, this is a great place for climbers.
But we would go up the Stelvio, right outside the village a few turns to quickly leave the plain.
You can still look out over the golf course and the valley and then you can focus on infinity.
The climb goes through several tunnels and they are dark and narrow, lighting is mandatory in Italy and the carabineri wants to check here sometimes, so you are warned.
1 tunnel has a big bend and becomes a lot narrower in the tunnel, so pay attention with a bus or truck because you will be squashed and they won't notice!
The bends are also numbered here, no 48 like from Prato no "only"40 pieces to the top.
The cluster before the border and crossing with the Umbrail pass is a true test, the steepest part is 18％ and despite the distraction of the view your legs scream for rest.
After the border another 4 kilometers at 9％ average but stable so let your legs run and focus on the summit.
Personally, I find Prato the mighty side, Umbrail the wicked stepmother and Bormio, well that one is fun.
Anyway these remain memorable climbs and challenging descents. Nowhere in Europe can you make a triptych that will be harder for any cyclist.
Passo Stelvio, de klassieke zijde vanuit Bormio. Het dorpje ademt sport; ski en schaatsen in de winter en fietsen in de zomer.
In het dorp is een grote camperparking; ik denk misschien de mooiste plek om te staan ter wereld; 360 graden mountain view.
Bormio is de startplaats van niet alleen de Stelvio maar ook de Gavia en niet veel verder ligt de Mortirolo te wachten op zijn prooi. Met de Bernina en Lago Cancano om de hoek en Bormio 2000 in de achtertuin kun je hier als klimmer je hart ophalen.
Maar we zouden de Stelvio opgaan, direct buiten het dorp een paar bochten om snel de vlakte te verlaten.
Je kunt nog even uitkijken over de golfbaan en het dal en dan kan de blik op oneindig.
De klim gaat door diverse tunnels en die zijn donker en smal, verlichting is verplicht in Italie en de carabineri wil hier nog wel eens controleren; je bent dus gewaarschuwd.
1 tunnel heeft een flinke bocht en wordt in de tunnel een stuk smaller, opletten dus met een bus of een vrachtauto want je wordt geplet en ze merken er niets van!
De bochten zijn ook hier genummerd, geen 48 zoals vanuit Prato nee "slechts"40 stuks naar de top.
Het cluster voor de grens en kruising met de Umbrail pas is een ware test, het steilste stuk is 18％ en ondanks de afleiding van het uitzicht schreeuwen je benen om rust.
Na de grens nog 4 kilometer aan 9％ gemiddeld maar wel stabiel dus laat je benen draaien en focus op de top.
Persoonlijk vind ik Prato de machtige zijde, Umbrail de boze stiefmoeder en Bormio, tja die is leuk.
Hoe dan ook dit blijven memorabele beklimmingen en uitdagende afdalingen. Nergens in Europa kun je een drieluik maken wat zwaarder zal zijn voor welke fietser dan ook.

Vanuit Bormio inderdaad afgesloten, s morgens tussen 6.00 en 8.00 uur weg naar de top wel open. Op 17 september eerst met de auto en fietsen achterop vanuit Bormio naar Prato gereden daar op fiets gestapt en berg beklommen vanuit Prato. Geweldige tocht, met een meesterlijke en machtige uitstraling van de col. Top bereikt samen met mijn zwager die kramp kreeg onderweg. Er zijn eigenlijk geen woorden voor. Doe toch een poging. Geweldig, mooi , genieten en afzien te gelijk wat een ervaring. Na de afdaling naar Prato weer met de auto naar Bormio. Die dag totaal met auto en fiets 272 haarspeldbochten genomen. Onbeschrijflijk....

Stelvio vanaf bormio nog 2 weken dicht, zal waarschijnlijk via de informatie van locals niet mer opengaan. Dit wegens hevige rotsen die over de weg blijven vallen! Veel Nederlandse wielrenners zijn teleurgesteld!
Stelvio from Bormio is closed from 2 sept because of rocks on the road. It will stay closed for at least this week, so I regret not having done it immediately on sept 1. But then again, round trip Stelvio up, umbrail down and stelvio up, on the first day of cycling is not all. So it will take two hours of driving to get to Prato. But there is nothing else to do, because you are coming for the Stelvio.
Stelvio vanuit Bormio is vanaf 2 sept dicht wegens rotsen op de weg. Blijft in elk geval deze hele week nog dicht. dus ik heb veel spijt dat ik hem niet meteen 1 sept gedaan heb. Maar ja, rondje Stelvio up, umbrail af en stelvio op, op eerste fietsdag is ook weer niet alles. Wordt dus twee uur auto rijden om in Prato te komen. Maar er zit niets anders op wand je komt toch voor de Stelvio.
Yesterday I cycled the Stelvio from both sides. Ideal that the climb is free of traffic 1 day a year. Although that means you are cycling with 1,000 others. I would definitely recommend a light. Road surface I found very good compared to eg the Mortirolo. The climb itself I found very good to do from Bormio. Nowhere is it really steep except for the last few km's. Fortunately, shortly before the last few km's you can get to your feet on a large piece of false flat.
Gisteren de Stelvio van beide kant gefietst. Ideaal dat de klim 1 dag per jaar verkeer vrij is. Al betekent dat wel dat je met 1.000 anderen fietst. Lampje zou ik zeker aanraden. Wegdek vond ik erg goed in vergelijking met bijvoorbeeld de Mortirolo. De klim zelf vond ik heel erg goed te doen vanuit Bormio. Nergens is het echt enorm stijl op de laatste km's na. Gelukkig kun je kort voor die laatste km's een beetje op adam komen op een flink stuk vals plat.
On 19-7-2019 I rode the Stelvio from Bormio. I left around 10:00 from Bormio and was curious what the 'legendary' Stelvio would bring me. Good weather with sunshine and about 16-18 degrees. Front and back light is nice for your own safety in the tunnels. Climbing went well and after first having to get into rhythm I was able to pedal on. I found the road really good so maybe they have recently improved the road surface or something but it was really good. Yes, there is traffic, especially motorcycles when I rode it, but it was really easy to do and it didn't bother me. So I think it matters a lot which day and time you choose.
At the top it is indeed a 'fairground', but that is to be expected on such a famous climb. But did not find it disturbing, and there enjoyed the view on the 'other' side. It is indeed useful to take a jacket or something for the descent because it can be quite chilly.
Op 19-7-2019 de Stelvio vanuit Bormio gereden. Rond 10:00 vanuit Bormio vertrokken en benieuwd wat de ‘legendarische’ Stelvio mij gaat brengen. Prima weersomstandigheden met zonnetje en zo’n 16-18 graden. Voor- en achterlichtje is wel prettig voor eigen veiligheid voor in de tunnels. Klimmen ging goed en na eerst beetje in ritme moeten komen lekker door kunnen trappen. Ik vond de weg echt prima dus misschien hebben ze wegdek onlangs verbeterd of zo maar was echt goed. Ja, er is zeker verkeer, m.n. motors toen ik er reed, maar vond het echt goed te doen en geen ‘last’ van gehad. Dus denk dat het veel uitmaakt welke dag en tijdstip je kiest.
Boven is het inderdaad een ‘kermis’, maar dat is te verwachten op zo’n bekende klim. Maar vond het niet storend, en daar even genoten van uitzicht aan de ‘andere’ kant. Het is inderdaad wel handig om jackje of iets voor de afdaling mee te nemen want kan best fris zijn.
Yesterday 17 july. Good weather conditions on the road. The description on this site corresponds to my experience. The heavy traffic and narrow roads makes it a bit stuffy sometimes. In the descents the transition from light to dark in the tunnels was a point of interest. Especially because in almost every tunnel there is a right turn.
And mean take enough clothes to descend or to cope with the changing weather conditions.
Gister 17 juli gereden. Prima weersomstandigheden onderweg. De omschrijving op deze site komt overeen met mijn ervaring. Het vele verkeer en de smalle wegen maakt het soms wel wat benauwd. In de afdaling was de overgang van licht naar donker in de tunnels nog wel een aandachtspunt. Zeker ook omdat er bijna in iedere tunnel een knik naar rechts zit.
En idd neem voldoende kleren mee om af te dalen of om de veranderende weersomstandigheden aan te kunnen..
Addition: the village is not called Rasin, but there are several villages adjacent to each other. Pradelle and Pedenosso are two of them. If you want the easier route you go from Bormio first to Premadio (along the golf club).
Aanvulling: het dorp heet niet Rasin, maar er zijn meerdere dorpjes tegen elkaar aan. Pradelle en Pedenosso zijn er twee. Als je de makkelijkere route wil dan ga je vanuit Bormio eerst naar Premadio (langs de golfclub).
Earlier this week I climbed this climb. Very beautiful and challenging, I recognize the description on this site, except that I find this side much less scenic than the Prato side. Not only because of the hairpin views, but also because of the mountain peaks.
From Bormio there is another beautiful climb than the Stelvio and the Umbrail, one that I do not find anywhere in the lists. That is the climb to the Torri die Fraele; you can start in Bormio, or from the village of Rasin (from where it is steeper but shorter). Both ways lead up to the hairpin bends that end up at the high lakes of Cancano. Very worthwhile because of the hairpin bends, the towers under the top, the steepness, and the beautiful view over the lakes and peaks when you're on top.
Eerder deze week heb ik deze beklimming gereden. Erg mooi en uitdagend, de beschrijving op deze site herken ik goed, behalve dat ik deze zijde landschappelijk echt veel minder vind dan de Prato zijde. Niet alleen vanwege de haarspeldbichten, maar ook vanwege de bergtoppen.
Vanuit Bormio is er nog een andere mooie klim dan de Stelvio en de Umbrail, eentje die ik nergens terug vind in de lijstjes. Dat is de klim naar de Torri die Fraele; die kan je starten in Bormio, of vanuit het dorp Rasin (vanwaar hij steiler maar korter is). Beide kanten leiden dan omhoog naar de haarspeldbochten die uitkomen bij de hoog gelegen meren van Cancano. Zeer de moeite waard vanwege de haarspeldbochten, de torentjes onder de top, de stijgingspercentages, en het prachtige uitzicht over de meren en de bergtoppen als je boven bent.
This week 2x climbed. Beautiful varied but tough climb. the road surface is currently very good because the Giro recently passed here. Around km 8/9 you come through a number of short, well-lit tunnels. Further a wonderful climb with hairpin bends, waterfalls on all sides and crossing marmots for those who also have an eye for nature. The last part is the toughest, but the sight of the top is good for morale. All in all a great experience!
Deze week 2x beklommen. Prachtige afwisselende maar pittige beklimming. het wegdek is momenteel zeer goed omdat de Giro hier kort geleden passeerde. Rond kilometer 8/9 kom je door een aantal korte, goed verlichte tunnels. verder een heerlijke klim met de haarspeldbochten, watervallen aan alle kanten en overstekende marmotten voor wie ook nog oog heeft voor de natuur. Het laatste stuk is het zwaarst, maar de aanblik van de top is goed voor het moraal. Al met al een geweldige ervaring!
Ridden in 2004. Started in Santa Catharina (Gavia) to warm up a bit, then climbed and descended the Stevio from both sides. Both sides are very tough. The Prato side has the name of course, but personally I prefer the Bormio side. Slightly milder, a more varied landscape and, not unimportantly, a great descent! Descending at the side of Prato is very tiring because of the many hairpin bends with high gradients.
Gereden in 2004. Opgestapt in Santa Catharina (Gavia) om nog wat warm te draaien, vervolgens de Stevio van beide kanten beklommen en gedaald. Beide kanten zijn zeer zwaar. De kant van Prato heeft uiteraard de naam, maar persoonlijk kies ik de kant van Bormio. Ietsje milder, een afwisselender landschap en, niet geheel onbelangrijk, een gewéldige afdaling! Afdalen aan de kant van Prato is erg vermoeiend door de vele haarspeldbochten met de grote hellingspercentages.
Of course you cycle up the Stelvio when you are in the neighbourhood, but be prepared for a disappointment. It is so crowded, especially with motorcycles and cars of which the drivers have won their license at the fair. On the other hand, it is a beastly climb with the most fantastic views ...
Natuurlijk fiets je de Stelvio op als je in de buurt bent, maar houdt rekening met een deceptie. Het is er namelijk zó druk, met name met motoren en auto's waarvan de chauffeurs hun rijbewijs op de kermis gewonnen hebben. Staat tegenover dat het wel een beestachtige klim is met de meest fantastische uitzichten...
Today 09/09/2016 cycled up the Stelvio from Bormio and the descent via the same road. The Stelvio may have a great name, but what will stay with me is the behavior and speed of the many sports cars and motorcyclists on this mountain. I am extremely depressed. Yesterday I cycled up three other cols near Bormio without any problems. The Stelvio is a race track where many do not respect the speed and take risks and this really endangers cyclists. A real shame. For those who come to cycle in the area. Torre di Fraele is an absolute must.
Vandaag 09/09/2016 de Stelvio opgefietst vanuit Bormio en de afdaling via dezelfde weg. De Stelvio mag dan een grote naam hebben, wat mij zal bijblijven is het gedrag en de snelheid van de vele sportwagens en motorrijders op deze berg. Ik ben er ontzettend gedegouteerd van. Gisteren drie andere cols opgefietst in de buurt van Bormio zonder problemen. De Stelvio is een racebaan waar velen de snelheid niet respecteren en risico's nemen en hierdoor worden fietsers echt wel in gevaar gebracht. Een echte schande. Voor wie in de buurt komt fietsen. Torre di Fraele is een absolute aanrader.
Started from Bormio on Wednesday 17th August 2016 and climbed the Stelvio. What a beautiful climb by bike. Once at the top, we descended directly to Prato and climbed the Stelvio by bike from this side as well. A tough job, but doable when you have done enough kilometers and your condition is good. Climbing the Stelvio twice in one day is not inferior to the Alpe d'HuZes that I did this year. Tip: make sure you have enough clothes and gloves, the sections are very cold and do not be surprised by the "turning" of the weather. On the Prato side the sun was shining, on the Bormio side it was raining. On top of the Stelvio pass it was four degrees. Passo del Stelvio is a must do! Twice in one day!!!! It's great to suffer!
Op woensdag 17 augustus 2016 begonnen vanuit Bormio en de Stelvio beklommen. Wat een prachtige beklimming per fiets. Eenmaal boven direct afgedaald naar Prato en ook vanaf deze kant de Stelvio per fiets beklommen. Een zware prestatie, maar zeker wel te doen als je voldoende kilometers hebt gemaakt en je conditie goed is. Tweemaal de Stelvio beklimmen op 1 dag doet niet onder voor de Alpe d'HuZes die ik dit jaar heb volbracht. Tip: zorg voor voldoende kleding en handschoenen, de afdelingen zijn erg koud en laat je niet verrassen door het "omslaan" van het weer. Aan de Prato-kant scheen de zon, aan de Bormio-kant regende het. Boven op de Stelviopas was het vier graden. Passo del Stelvio moet je doen! Twee keer op één dag!!!! Heerlijk dat afzien!

The week before the official opening of the col (usually somewhere at the end of May) you can cycle up the col reasonably alone. The col is 'closed' (read -> the ceiling is still closed at the foot, but you have to crawl under it), but it is completely cleared of snow. Only a few local cyclists and workers from road works are present. Only a few cars and no motorcyclists. Pure enjoyment up, and even more down! ;-)
De week voor de officiële opening van de col (ergens eind mei meestal) fiets je wel redelijk alleen naar boven. De col is weliswaar 'gesloten' (lees -> de bareel is nog dicht aan de voet maar daar kruip je even onder door), maar is al helemaal vrijgemaakt van sneeuw. Enkel wat wielertoeristen uit de streek en arbeiders van wegwerkzaamheden kom je tegen. Slechts een paar auto's en geen motorrijders. Puur genieten naar boven, en nog meer naar beneden! ;-)
I climbed it 6 July 2012 from bormio, I found it a very nice climb last 2km fierce and heavy, in bormio it was 24 degrees warm over 2700m high barely 6 degrees icy cold with a cutting wind, still one of the most beautiful climbs that there are both the road nature view and height a topper
heb hem 6juli 2012 beklommen vanuit bormio , ik vond het een heel mooie beklimming laatste 2km heftig en zwaar, in bormio was het 24 graden warm boven ruim 2700m hoog amper 6 graden ijzig koud met een snijdende wind , toch een van de mooiste beklimmingen die er zijn zowel de weg natuur uitzicht en hoogte een topper
I am lucky to drive up in october with sunshine, so no hordes of motorcycles and old timers but whole times just me and the mountain, only the sound of the rivers and your tires and here and there some shifting snow on the sides. Beautiful climb and enjoyed it to the fullest. Just make sure in this time for good clothing for the descent otherwise it is less, to the top you are warm.
Ik heb het geluk half oktober met zon naar boven te rijden, dus geen hordes motoren en old timers maar hele tijden alleen ik en de berg, alleen het geluid van de riviertjes je banden en hier en daar wat verschuivende sneeuw aan de kanten. Prachtige beklimming volop genoten. Zorg alleen in deze tijd wel voor goede kleding voor de afdaling anders is dat wat minder, naar boven heb je het wel warm.
