Both climbs (Valfréjus and Le Seuil) are well worth the effort. And they are very different. This ascent of Le Seuil is rather wild. A fine continuation of the 14 hairpin bends of Valfréjus. The road is much less maintained and some sections can be described as gravel, easy gravel, but the gravel and holes are there for the taking. And then, once again, the road gets a facelift. The landscapes are more rugged. The vegetation becomes rarer. We're getting closer to the summits. There... read more

The landscapes are more rugged. The vegetation becomes rarer. We're getting closer to the summits. There's nobody left. Just sheep and patous. The gradients aren't too steep, but the end is steeper all the same. You have to go as far as this strange ventilation shaft in the Fréjus tunnel:
a dead end and sheep droppings.

When I arrived at Valfréjus, I cycled on a bit out of curiousity. There's not much of a road (dirt/gravel) to start with, but surprisingly, this gets better and well paved further up. The road ends near a large ventilation shaft for the Fréjus tunnel beneath.
