You can start the climb in Mühlen in Taufers on the main road SP42 or start from Via Gries and then take the Schattenberg. I took the latter because there is zero traffic through it and it is a singularly beautiful little road through the countryside. The start is a hugely steep section with percentages up to 16％ and 2 hairpin bends, so that in no time you can see the village below you. On Treasure Mountain, Jesus' crusade is depicted in several statues along the road. After the brisk start, the climb is fairly even until the junction with the main road SP42. By then, you have about's 3 km behind you.
On that main road there is a fair amount of traffic, which moreover tears through right next to you at reckless speeds as is unfortunately common in Italy. This stretch is a fairly easy "runner" without too high percentages. But from the moment you see the village of Lappago in the distance, the pain begins. From now on, the percentages will rarely dip below 2 digits. The road also has several short tunnels in total. One you get out of in no time, the two others have a separate cycle path. The first of these is 350m by 10％, so be sure not to forget to cross the street to take the separate cycle path on the other side. At the third one, the bike path is on the right, but the kerb is too high to hit it without dismounting.
Two kilometres before the summit, the road ends with a barrier through which cars're not allowed unless paid. All the suffering up to that point is nothing compared to what awaits you next. The bike computer hardly gives percentages below 10％ (mostly 12％ to 14％)and even a peak up to 19％. For cars's there is also a turn with lights to drive up or down as the road is only one lane wide. But there is just enough space for one car and one cyclist to ride side by side.
At 1 km from the top, you can see the dam and it doesn't seem so high above you anymore. And you think that the last stretch is not so bad, but da's a trick of the eye. In the last kilometre you also have to climb 123 altitude metres. So it is still raking. Also, in the last part, water flows over the street (which comes from the mountain) over a distance of several hundred metres, making it very slippery. On the steepest parts, your wheel can slip a bit here, but it is especially careful during descent. It remains steep up to the dam, but the real top is 200m away and that stretch is false flat. So there your heart rate can finally go down while you have a nice view of the reservoir.
Je kan de beklimming starten in Mühlen in Taufers op de hoofdweg SP42 of vertrekkend vanop de Via Gries en dan de Schattenberg nemen. Ik heb die laatste genomen omdat er nul verkeer doorrijdt en het een enig mooi wegje is door het landschap. De start is een enorm steil stuk met percentages tot 16％ en 2 haarspeldbochten, zodat je in no-time het dorp onder je ziet liggen. Op de schattenberg wordt de kruistocht van Jezus uitgebeeld in verschillende beelden langs de weg. Na de stevige start, loopt de klim redelijk gelijkmatig tot de aansluiting met de hoofdweg SP42. Dan heb je al zo'n 3 km achter de rug.
Op die grote weg is er redelijk wat verkeer, dat bovendien tegen roekeloze snelheden vlak naast je doorscheurt zoals in Italië helaas gebruikelijk is. Dit stuk is een vrij makkelijke "loper" zonder al te hoge percentages. Maar vanaf je het dorpje Lappago in de verte ziet liggen begint de pijn. Vanaf nu zullen de percentages zelden nog onder de 2 cijfers duiken. De weg heeft ook enkele korte tunnels. Eentje ben je zo uit, de twee anderen hebben een afzonderlijk fietspad. De eerste daarvan is 350m tegen 10％, dus vergeet zeker niet de straat over te steken om het afzonderlijke fietspad aan de andere kant te nemen. Bij de derde ligt het fietspad rechts, maar de stoeprand is te hoog om er zonder afstappen op te raken.
Twee kilometer voor de top eindigt de weg met een slagboom waar auto's niet door mogen tenzij tegen betaling. Al het afzien tot dan valt in het niets bij wat je dan te wachten staat. De fietscomputer geeft nauwelijks nog percentages onder de 10％ (meestal 12％ tot 14％)en zelfs een piek tot 19％. Voor de auto's is er ook een beurtrol met lichten om naar boven of beneden te rijden omdat de weg maar één baanvak breed is. Maar er is net voldoende plaats voor één auto en één fietser om naast elkaar te rijden.
Op 1 km van de top zie je de stuwdam liggen en lijkt die niet zo hoog meer boven je. En denk je dat het laatste stukje wel meevalt, maar da's gezichtsbedrog. In de laatste kilometer moet je ook nog 123 hoogtemeters overbruggen. Dus blijft het harken. Ook stroomt er in het laatste gedeelte over een afstand van enkele honderden meters water over de straat (wat van de berg komt) waardoor het erg glad wordt. Op de steilste stukken kan je wiel hier wel wat slippen, maar het is vooral opletten tijdens afdaling. Het blijft steil tot aan de stuwdam, maar de echte top ligt 200m verder en dat stuk is vals plat. Dus daar kan je hartslag eindelijk naar omlaag terwijl je een mooi uitzicht hebt op het stuwmeer.
