Construction work is currently taking place in the last gallery before Kühtai. The road is actually closed there, but I was able to drive past the machines. A positive side effect was that the upper third of the road was less busy. Further down, a post bus overtook me with a 50cm gap, even though I was almost driving on the sideline. I won't repeat my rant here, but that was absolutely unnecessary. The Kreuzlehnstich with up to 20% gradient according to the sign is already very strenuous, but there are always flatter spots on the ascent where you can loosen up your thighs again. Today, at the end of October, it was only 4 degrees at Kühtai, the road up to the Finstertal reservoir was closed with a barrier and probably no longer passable because of the snow. Some hairpin bends on the descent to Ötz were very dirty due to clearing work and heavy equipment was on the road, so I rode rather slowly and it was freezing cold. Nevertheless, a great tour at the end of the season.

This is a long grind of a climb from the outskirts of Innsbruck. The whole climb is fairly shielded from sun and wind, which is a plus. There are some inconsistent kickers in the second half of the ascent, with one section cranking the gradient to 18-19 percent for a few hundred meters - ouch! The traffic is light, the surface is smooth, the scenery pastoral and lovely. The peal of cowbells is almost constant for the second half of the climb. Beware that the weather can turn at the top, as it did for me (wind, rain, lightning, hail) and that the ski station just past the summit can be rather vacant in July and August, with few shops open. But there is no worry about water or food along the way with towns having the conveniences available. The descent into Ötz is another story, entirely (fast and sweeping).

Nice climb, but over a fairly busy road. The higher you get the nicer it gets though. The asphalt is top (and down very fast!). In the last part, wild horses, cows and donkeys walk along the road and it is sometimes nice slalom. In my case, this part of the climb was very foggy and then you have to watch out, especially downhill. I personally find the other side from Oetz a bit more fun and varied to do.

More than a decade ago, I climbed the other side of the Kühtai and I remember it as a very nice experience. For several holidays I had planned to attack this side, but due to the long distances that I would have to travel to attack this beautiful col from this side, I never got around to it. Until today...
This side is the first descent in the famous Oetztaller Radmarathon. Based on the profile here on Climbfinder, I expected a long almost 'French' climb, but never really heavy.
But that was disappointing! Ok, it was quite hot today (35 degrees), but this thing is harder than the profile suggests. I do think the altitude profile is accurate here. The problem is that this is a climb for which the word 'erratic' was invented. You often have long stretches full to 11% even up to 15%, but then you have, say, 70-80 even 100 metres of a short descent. Which upsets the average.
So expect a tough climb here. About 11 to 10 km from the summit you have a killer strip that you also notice in the profile and indicated on the road with signs, which flirts with 15 to 17% for about a kilometre.
Personally, I think the Kühtai is a bucket list climb, so for me 5 stars. Actually, on both sides. On the other side, a bit shorter, steeper, but less erratic.
Oh yes, definitely bring lights, because there are tunnels and longer galleries. Cyclists will be able to see well, but make sure you are seen too. Although it is a relatively traffic-free col.... SAFETY FIRST;

Oh ja, zeker lichtjes meenemen, want er zijn tunneltjes en langere galerijen. Als fietser zal je goed kunnen zien, maar zorg er ook voor dat jij gezien wordt. Hoewel het een relatief verkeersvrije col is... SAFETY FIRST;
