The round Grimsel, Furka, Susten is a beautiful experience. But I honestly cannot say that I find the Grimsel pass itself so fascinating. As soon as you get over it and do the Furka, it becomes more interesting. And the best is saved for last: the approach to and the first part of the Sustenpass.
I left around 8am (a Tuesday in September) and few cars and motorbikes on the whole route.
Het rondje Grimsel, Furka, Susten is een mooie ervaring. Maar ik kan eerlijk gezegd niet zeggen dat ik de Grimselpas op zich nou zo boeiend vind.. Zodra je erover bent en de Furka gaat doen wordt het interessanter. En het mooiste is voor het laatst bewaard: de aanloop naar en eerste stuk van de Sustenpas.
Ik ben rond 8u vertrokken (een dinsdag in september) en weinig auto's en motoren op de gehele route.
As others have written, this is not an easy climb, mainly because of the irregularity and the profile that might suggest otherwise.
Towards the top, it gets busier and busier with cars and motorbikes. Yet I found it quite a nice climb to do, although perhaps not as overwhelming in nature as the Sustenpass, there is still enough beauty to see.
On the way there, two detours around the tunnels are indicated, which are beautiful and recommended. When descending, I took all the tunnels, you're so through it (of course with lights).
When you get to the top, you really have to take the Oberaar if you still have time and energy!
Zoals anderen al schrijven is dit geen gemakkelijke klim, vooral door de onregelmatigheid en het profiel dat misschien anders doet vermoeden.
Richting de top wordt het drukker en drukker met auto's en motoren. Toch vond ik het best een leuke klim om te doen, hoewel misschien niet zo overweldigend qua natuur als de Sustenpas, is er toch genoeg moois te zien.
Op de heenweg zijn twee omleidingen om de tunnels aangegeven, die zijn mooi en aan te raden. Bij het afdalen heb ik alle tunnels gepakt, je bent er zo doorheen. (Uiteraard wel met lampjes.)
Bovengekomen moet je écht de Oberaar meepakken als je nog tijd en energie hebt!

The Grimsel Pass from Innertkirchen is a climb on a large, much used road. You share the road with many motorbikes and several cars. This did not bother me at all. The approach is relatively flat and allows you to warm up quietly, which in this case I did from Brienz. A climbing gear and a certain degree of training do the rest.
Steepness varies enormously. So it is sometimes tougher than the average suggests. At the same time, there are plenty of opportunities to recover along the way. Water can be replenished in Guttanen.
On top there are many restaurants and, when the weather is clear, beautiful views. After this, the choice remains to descend the Grimsel towards the Furkapass or back to Innertkirchen. I did the latter.
Advice: take up the diversions at the tunnels for your own safety and the beauty. To descend, you can go through the tunnels just fine!

De Grimselpas vanuit Innertkirchen betreft een klim over een grote, veel gebruikte weg. Je deelt de weg met vele motoren en diverse auto's. Mij stoorde dit geenzins. De aanloop is relatief vlak en stelt je in staat om rustig warm te draaien wat ik in dit geval vanuit Brienz heb gedaan. Een klimverzet en zekere mate van getraindheid doen de rest.
Stijlte wisselt enorm. Het is soms dus zwaarder dan het gemiddelde doet voorkomen. Tegelijkertijd zijn er genoeg mogelijkheden om te herstellen onderweg. Water kan worden aangevuld in Guttanen.
Bovenop veel horeca en bij helder weer, mooie vergezichten. Hierna de keuze om de Grimsel af te dalen richting Furkapass of terug te dalen naar Innertkirchen. Zelf dit laatste gedaan.
Advies: pak omhoog de omleidingen bij de tunnels voor je eigen veiligheid en de schoonheid. Om te dalen kan je de tunnels prima door!
With the Sustenpass already behind us, this is not a nice climb. Because of the irregularity really a killer for me. Nice so'n average but that does not help you. Once arrived at the dam, it is not really caressing for the eye anymore and after the flat part, you are only suffering. Again, very busy with motorbikes and sports cars.
Met de Sustenpass al achter de rug is dit geen fijne klim. Vanwege de onregelmatigheid echt een killer wat mij betreft. Leuk zo'n gemiddelde maar daar heb je niks aan. Eenmaal bij de dam aangekomen is het ook niet echt meer strelend voor het oog en ben je na het vlakke stuk alleen nog maar aan het afzien. Ook hier weer erg druk met motoren en sportauto's.

By far the most beautiful climb in the region around Andermatt. The first few kilometres are relatively easy and not very spectacular, but this is completely made up for in the last part. With open mouths you cycle through a beautiful scenery. At the top there is a nice crowd. Do not forget the piece to the Oberaar Panoramastrasse to tackle. Breathtaking!
Met stip de mooiste beklimming in de regio rond Andermatt. De eerste kilometers zijn relatief eenvoudig en weinig spectaculair, maar dit wordt volledig goed gemaakt in het laatste gedeelte, waar je ogen te kort komt. Op de top heerst een gezellige drukte. Vergeet vooral niet het stukje naar de Oberaar Panoramastrasse mee te pakken. Adembenemend!
From Brienz (beginning of the Haslital) to the top (end of the Haslital) and back (approx. 88 km). From Meiringen 30 km. you have to climb 1650 hm. Last 11 km. 750 hm.
Look left and right regularly :-) and see the Gelmerbahn on the left. Impressive piece of Swiss engineering!
Do not think, when you see the first dam, that you are almost there because then you have to climb for at least another hour to the first lake, along it, to the second lake, along it and with 3 or 4 long loops to the top. Once at the top, the view is impressive.
If you still have enough energy (also for the return journey or the continuation!) then the panorama path is still an option!
On the way back to Brienz, please note a milled gutter in the last diversion (for cyclists, around the tunnel) and the 2 km climb behind Innertkirchen.
Van Brienz (begin Haslital) naar de top (einde Haslital) en terug (circa 88 km.). Vanaf Meiringen 30 km. klimmend 1650 hm. overwinnen. Laatste 11 km. circa 750 hm overwinnen.

Denk, wanneer je de eerste dam ziet, niet dat je er bijna bent want dan moet je nog minstens een uur doorklimmen naar het 1e meer, erlangs, naar het 2e meer, erlangs en met nog 3 a 4 lange lussen naar de top. Bovengekomen is het uitzicht indrukwekkend.
Mocht je nog genoeg energie hebben (ook voor de terugweg of de voortzetting!) dan is de panoramaweg nog een optie!
Op de terugweg naar Brienz nog rekening houden met een gefreesde goot in de laatste omleiding (voor fietsers, rondom de tunnel) en met de beklimming van 2 km achter Innertkirchen
Climbed it last year as part of the Susten/Grimsel/Furka loop. (Couldn't finish it due to very bad weather - luckily the train network is well developed, and has a capacity for cyclists :-))
Long climb that becomes especially beautiful towards the end; definitely take the detours around the tunnels - is in itself a reason to do the climb.
The real highlight of this pass is the other side
Vorig jaar beklommen als deel van de lus Susten/Grimsel/Furka. (niet kunnen afmaken door het enorm slechte weer - gelukkig is het treinnet goed uitgebouwd, en voorzien op fietsers :-))
Lange klim die vooral naar het einde toe prachtig wordt; Zeker de omleidingen rond de tunneltjes nemen - is op zich al een reden om de klim te doen.
De echte highlight van deze pas is de andere zijde
The climb seems easy but it certainly is not. Because of the length and the percentages it is often difficult, but the beautiful nature you can see makes everything beautiful and bearable. My third picture is the Grimselpass viewed from the Furkapass and the old bridge can be found next to the new road to the Grimselpass at a place where it is not so steep.
De beklimming lijkt gemakkelijk maar dat is het zeker niet. Wegens de lengte en de stijgingspercentages is het vaak moeilijk, maar de mooie natuur die je kan aanschouwen maakt alles mooi en draaglijk. Mijn derde foto is de Grimselpass bekeken vanuit de Furkapass en de oude brug vind je naast de nieuwe weg naar de Grimselpass op een plaats waar het niet zo steil is.

North side is long side . Beginning part is winding road through small villages with occasional grouped hairpin turns . Ascent percentages are not extreme but irregular . The route searches for a way to get above the large reservoirs (Räterichsbodensee / Grimselsee) with power stations. Especially where uphill cyclists have no access to some of the 5 tunnels, and are diverted, it is very steep but you cycle exclusively / traffic-free through beautiful narrow rocky gorge. Pashoogte lies at the Totesee and is a summer busy gathering place of motorcycles / cars / tourists. Catering is sufficient.
On the wide road was busy (heavy) traffic by works on lakes and because it is a popular moto route.
The other side is more pure nature and less busy and therefore I prefer it.
Cycling tip: At the pass height you can cycle along the beautiful Oberaar Panoramastrasse for extra km/height meters.

Noordkant is lange zijde . Begindeel is slingerende weg door kleine dorpjes met af en toe enkele gegroepeerde haarspeldbochten. Stijgingspercentages zijn niet extreem maar onregelmatig . De route zoekt zich een weg om boven de grote stuwmeren (Räterichsbodensee / Grimselsee) met krachtcentrales uit te komen. Zeker waar fietsers bergop geen toegang hebben tot enkele van de 5 tunnels, en worden omgeleid, is het heel steil maar je fietst exclusief/verkeersvrij door prachtige nauwe rotskloof. Pashoogte ligt aan de Totesee en is een zomers drukke verzamelplaats van motoren/auto's en toeristen. Horeca is er voldoende.
Op de brede weg was er druk (zwaar) verkeer door werken aan stuwmeren en omdat het een populaire moto route is.
De andere klimzijde is meer puur natuur en minder druk en geniet daarom mijn voorkeur.
Fietstip: Op pashoogte kan je extra doorfietsen langs de prachtige Oberaar Panoramastrasse voor extra km./hoogte meters.Er is wel afwisselend éénrichtingsverkeer.
01-10-2020 (Closed on 28th and 29th September due to snow. Open again on 30th September). From Meiringen provincial road nr. 6 100m up and down again. Innertkirchen 26km up. Along the way you have 4 short tunnels 1 long tunnel here you have to use piece old Grimselpass (120m cobblestones). 2 dams 1 village (Guttannen). Was exciting but I survived. 01-10-2020 (28 en 29 september gesloten wegens sneeuw vanaf 30 september weer open) Nu mooi weer. Vanuit Meiringen provinciale weg nr 6 100m omhoog en weer omlaag. Innertkirchen 26km omhoog. Onderweg heb je 4 korte tunnels 1 lange tunnel hier moet je via stuk oude Grimselpass (120m kasseien). 2 stuwdammen 1 dorp (Guttannen). Was spannend maar heb overleefd. (je fietst wel naar de Totensee) zie Motor!

Op het begin is dit niet de mooiste klim, maar het einde maakt veel goed.
Daar is het echt prachtig en genieten van het uitzicht.
Onderweg zijn er een aantal tunnels, echter kan je hier ook naast rijden op een iets slechtere weg, maar wel mooier en veiliger.
Er is wel wat verkeer op de grimsel, maar de weg is breed en goed.
Dus ze kunnen er makkelijk passeren.
Boven op de Grimsel kan je ook genieten van een drankje en hapje.
Ik zou zeggen, daal langs de andere kant de grimsel af, en pak ineens de Furka mee.
Echt prachtige klim ook.
Vervolgens ben ik terug de achterkant van de grimsel opgedraaid (kant langs waar je daalt om naar de Furka te gaan).
En dan terug naar beneden langs de grimsel die je eerst had gedaan (zoals hier beschreven).
Was goed voor iets meer dan 3000 hoogtemeters.
En vervolgens terug naar Brienz, vertrekplaats
Good climb, nice and long and varied. Occasionally you are led off the (car) road to follow the old route, which is extremely quiet but the asphalt is slightly less. Furthermore, fantastic asphalt. By the crowds of cars and motorcycles you are forced towards the white line, where more often loose stones lie. The lakes are beautiful, especially on the pass itself is a picture with the mountains on the other side. At the top there is ample opportunity to recuperate on both sides of the pass (which runs along the lake).
Prima klim, lekker lang en afwisselend. Af en toe wordt je van de (auto)weg af geleid om de oude route te volgen; die is extreem rustig maar het asfalt is iets minder. Verder fantastisch asfalt. Door de drukte met auto's en motoren wordt je wel richting de witte streep gedwongen, waar vaker losse steentjes liggen. De meren zijn mooi, vooral op de pas zelf is het een plaatje met de bergen aan de overkant. Bovenop voldoende gelegenheid om te recupereren aan beide kanten van de pas (die langs het meer loopt).
Not the most beautiful climb in the area, but a good road surface, when we were there not too busy! The descent is nicer and you look out on the Furkapass.
Niet de mooiste klim in de omgeving, maar wel een prima wegdek, toen wij er waren niet al te druk! De afdaling is mooier en kijk je uit op de Furkapass.
