Friendly, running climb on Swiss perfect asphalt. I rode it in 98 with little traffic and unfortunately cloudy conditions.
I tackled the climb on a sunny Saturday in early September, the traffic is quite heavy even in the early morning: the stretches with alternating traffic lights do not help because they compact the cars which then overtake you in fleets at a regular pace. The first half of the route is easily pedalled, the gradient low and regular; from an altitude of 2000 metres, however, there is a strong headwind that makes pedalling harder than it is (it felt like being around 10%).
The climb is not excessively steep, although it increases with altitude, making it more difficult to climb at the end than at the beginning.
At the top it is quite nice, although the other side is even nicer.
The asphalt is very good and the traffic is heavier than I expected.
It's a beautiful pass, and for me it's a bit heavier than I expected based on the profile (could also be because we did the Wolfgangpass immediately before that, of course. Windy though, and quite a few cars. Asphalt is fine, except for the stretches where you just cycle offroad between the stones. Descent to the other side is very nice!
Nice climb from Davos. This way felt like the easy side, yet from Susch there were a lot spicier sections in between. From Davos you swing up on perfect road sections between the trees. From Damiano's Gasthuis (a nice hairpin turn past a little church) it gets a bit steeper but nowhere does it get really difficult. At weekends in June, it is incredibly busy with cars's, motorbikes and other cyclists. So if possible, go during the week.
Mooie klim vanuit Davos.
The Swiss mondaine Davos, known for the yearly "World Economic Forum" with all the world leaders, but also starting point of the beautiful climb over the Flüela Pass. Past the Davoser See and just before entering Davos, you turn left across the railway and the climb starts slowly. Afterwards it turns into a long continuous ascent without extremes where you cycle between the woods and the river on the right.
In Dörfli (1800m) you pass the Pischa ski lift and after cycling out of Tschuggen (tree line 2000m) there are a few hairpin bends which, together with the mountain stream, bring you to the mountain lake and hotel on the pass height. Beautiful view to the right on the Fluëla Schwarzhorn (3146m) a challenge for a bike-free day!
There was quite some wind between the 2 ridges and there was heavy traffic (also buses and trucks) on the way to Susch/Zernec and St Moritz.
