One of the most beautiful climbs I know... done in October 2023 with zero traffic and a couple of foxes waiting for me at the col... priceless. The climb is tough, there's no denying it, but it's so beautiful in terms of the scenery that the fatigue is gone! Unmissable

Cycled one of the few paved roads that climb high into the heart of the Parco Nazionale Gran Paradiso in Piedmont in early September 2024.
Started in my residence Locana courtesy of the B&B manager who gave me the green light on a drizzly morning after consulting webcams and local mountain weather sites following a night of torrential rain and heavy thunderstorms.
The first part of the route follows the national park border and the Orco River from village to village, climbing gently with two exceptions. Leaving Noasca, there are four stacked hairpin bends and a little further there is a 3534m steep tunnel. This is not banned for cyclists but there is a beautiful traffic-free yet punchy alternative between huge boulders and with super steep hairpins, to the left of the tunnel entrance.
Along the Lago di Cerezole it's time to recuperate before finally cycling into the Park announced by the bike signs that will inform you every kilometre from then on. (Distance to summit/altitude/％volgende km.)
Narrow road along which, with increasing altitude, the wooden snow height posts and guard rails disappear and only white lines will line the asphalt.
Beautiful series of curves winds upwards between rock formations, waterfalls, past reservoir Serru and over the dam of Lago Agnel. Route winds on endlessly and some kilometres flirt with the 10％ anyway. Hopping whistling marmots and a herd of crossing ibex provided distractions.
Reaching desolate summit was emotional for me due to the overwhelming natural beauty and the physical effort quite strenuous due to length and altitude.
But only one piece of advice fits here for all mountain cyclists. Any condition, you have to be on top of this one day!
Practical:
-That day a lot of clouds (see photos's) that fortunately opened up regularly but caused serious temperature drops.
Extra clothing was no luxury , especially on the descent.
-Supply on the way from Ceresole Reale only water sources.
-First Monday in September there was hardly any traffic.
Summer months are touristy very busy but there are auto&moto restrictions some days.
-The climb is only open for a limited period of the year!
Conclusion:
Finding a climb more famous and well-known than this one is easy,but finding a nicer col becomes a whole lot harder!!!!

Eén van de weinige geasfalteerde wegen die hoog opklimmen in het hart van het Parco Nazionale Gran Paradiso in Piëmonte gefietst begin september 2024.
Gestart in mijn verblijfplaats Locana met dank aan de B&B uitbaatster die mij groen licht gaf op een druilige voormiddag na het raadplegen van de webcams en lokale bergweer sites volgend op een nacht met stortregens en zware onweders.
Het eerste deel van de route volgt de grens van het nationaal park en de Orco rivier van dorpje tot dorpje, rustig klimmend op twee uitzonderingen na. Bij het verlaten van Noasca zijn er 4 gestapelde haarspeldbochten en even verder is er een 3534m. lange steile tunnel. Deze is niet verboden voor fietsers maar er is een prachtig verkeersvrij doch pittig alternatief tussen enorme rotsblokken en met super steile haarspeldbochten, links van de tunnelingang.
Langs het Lago di Cerezole is het even recupereren om daarna definitief het Park binnen te fietsen aangekondigd door de fietsbordjes die je vanaf dan elke kilometer zullen informeren. (afstand tot top/hoogte/％volgende km.)
Smalle weg waarlangs met toenemende hoogte de houten sneeuwhoogte palen en vangrails verdwijnen en alleen witte lijnen het asfalt zullen begrenzen.
Prachtige bochtenreeks wringt zich naar omhoog tussen rotspartijen, watervallen, langs stuwmeer Serru en over de stuwdam van Lago Agnel. Route kronkelt eindeloos verder en sommige kilometers flirten toch met de 10％. De huppelende fluitende marmotten en een kudde overstekende steenbokken zorgden voor afleiding.
Desolate top bereiken was emotioneel voor mij door de overdonderende natuurpracht en de door lengte en hoogte behoorlijk zware fysieke inspanning.
Maar hier past maar één advies voor alle bergfietsers. Eender welke conditie, hier moet je ooit boven staan!
Praktisch:
-Die dag veel bewolking (zie foto's) die gelukkig regelmatig open trok maar zorgde voor serieuze temperatuurdaling.
Extra kleding was geen luxe , zeker in de afdaling.
-Bevoorrading onderweg vanaf Ceresole Reale alleen waterbronnetjes.
-Eerste maandag van september was er amper verkeer.
Zomermaanden zijn toeristisch erg druk maar er zijn sommige dagen auto&moto beperkingen.
-De klim is maar beperkte periode van het jaar open!
Conclusie:
Een beklimming vinden die beroemder en bekender is dan deze is makkelijk,maar een mooiere col vinden wordt een heel pak moeilijker!!!!
De MOOISTE voor mij persoonlijk,en ik heb al heel wat achter de wielen.
A stupendous climb that becomes marvellous as you go up, with postcard landscapes. It is tough between Noasca and Ceresole and then up to the Serù dam, but the beauty around you makes the effort light. Absolutely to be done at least once, but even after years of repeating it, you never get tired of it!
Salita stupenda che man mano che sali diventa meravigliosa, con paesaggi da cartolina. È dura tra Noasca e Ceresole e poi fino alla diga del Serrù, ma la bellezza che hai intorno rende leggera la fatica. Da fare assolutamente almeno una volta, ma anche dopo anni che la ripeti non ti stufa mai!
Beautiful climb from Ceresole.
Up to below the Serru dam it's easy, then the road for 3-4km plants itself at 10-14％ and is nice and hard.
Once at the dam the climb becomes normal again, with a gradient of 5-8％. At the summit really nice, with still walls of snow.
Done when the road from Serru to the pass was closed and therefore empty of people.
Nice that there are milestones to indicate slope and distance, as in France.

Fino a sotto alla diga del Serru è facile, poi la strada per 3-4km si pianta al 10-14％ ed è bella duretta.
Arrivati alla diga la salita torna normale, con pendenza 5-8％. In vetta veramente bello, con ancora muri di neve.
Fatto quando la strada dal Serru al colle era chiusa, pertanto priva di gente.
Bello che ci siano i cippi miliari a indicare pendenza e distanza, come in Francia.
Wow, very breathtaking. Even if I missed the top with 5-6 km, due to a puncture.
Little known fact. From the other side (Le Pont) there is an alpine path that can be hike-a-biked until you reach the old military road (not really a road at all) which brings you for 7 km across a wide mountain col/plateau until you pick up the real road and ride down the route described here. Did it at night as part of the 3 peaks bike race and it was one of the hardest things I've done on a bike - absolutely freezing riding down at 03:00. Toptip,- take a pair of trainers, I absolutely destroyed an expensive pair of bike shoes.
I started cycling from Courgnè up to Nivolet, it was a trip to the top, the view is crazy and if you go down a few hundred metres after the pass sign you can take a break at the Città di Chivasso refuge, to be done again!

Set off from Cuorgnè at the bottom of the valley, 400m above sea level on 9 August 2023.
The road is nice and well tarmacked, the gradient is gentle 2％ on average to get you going.
All goes well until Locana where the gradient steepens a little, then things get complicated with the road getting narrower and the Italians brushing past you and driving fast.
Passage at 12％ of 1km in a straight line before Noasca it starts!
Then at the entrance to the tunnel turn left onto the old, very wild and very steep road with a little 12％ for 2 kms non-stop. Dream setting the road winds through the rocks until you reach the exit of the tunnel, this part is really very steep it's a wall, plan the gear ratio accordingly.
Then a short hairpin bend at 12％, a magnificent waterfall in the village on your right, and the obligatory photo before you reach the lake and Ceresole Reale, a haven of peace with small restaurants and a mountain village atmosphere.
A short 1 km descent to make you think all is well and then 10 km non-stop at 10％ awaits you all the way to the dam, with sections at 12％, 13％ and even a 17％ to spice things up a little before the dam.
Remember to top up your water supply at the foot of the hump (just after the campsite), it's the last fountain before the summit!
The view from the dam is breathtaking, taking in the whole of the Gran Paradiso park.
A short descent of 40m before resuming the final ascent of 6kms at 7％ 8％ which seems like 12％ with the altitude and a wind that could blow the tails off donkeys, so be careful to stay clear-headed.
Finally, the summit that stretches out its arms to you with its 2625m a must and the photo of course, for my part done in 4h from Cuorgnè that is 62kms.
Go on, it's unforgettable!
Parti de Cuorgnè en fond de vallée, 400m d'altitude le 9 Août 2023.
La route est belle et bien goudronnée, la pente est faible 2％ en moyenne pour se mettre en jambe.
Tout va bien jusqu'à Locana où la pente se prononce un peu, ensuite les choses se compliquent avec la route qui devient plus étroite et les Italiens qui vous frôlent et qui roulent vite.
Passage à 12％ de 1km en ligne droite avant Noasca ca commence!
Puis à l'entrée du tunel prendre à gauche la vieille route très sauvage et très pentue avec un petit 12％ sur 2 kms non stop. Cadre de rêve la route serpente dans les rochers jusqu'à récupérer la sortie du tunel, cette partie est vraiment très raide c'est un mur, prévoir le braquet en conséquence.
Puis petits lacets à 12％, cascade magnifique dans le village sur votre droite photo obligatoire avant de rejoindre le lac et Ceresole Reale havre de paix avec petits restos et son ambiance village de montagne.
Petite descente de 1 km pour faire croire que tout va bien et la c'est 10kms non stop à 10％ qui vous attendent jusqu'au barrage, avec des passages à 12％, 13％ et même un 17％ pour corser un peu le tout un peu avant le barrage.
Pensez à vous recharger en eau au pied de la bosse (juste après le camping) , c'est la dernière fontaine avant le sommet!
Au barrage c'est splendide on embrasse tout le parc du Grand Paradis.
Petite descente de 40m de dénivelé pour reprendre l'ascension finale de 6kms à 7％ 8％ qui vous en paraissent 12％ avec l'altitude et un vent à arracher la queue des ânes, attention à rester lucide.
Enfin le sommet qui vous tend les bras avec ses 2625m un must et la photo bien sûr, pour ma part fait en 4h depuis Cuorgnè soit 62kms.
Allez-y c'est inoubliable!!

Much already said for this magnificent climb, that I quote. Two dams and much water flowing over 2.000mt as wonderful panorama. The hard part is from Ceresole as you need to climb 1000+ mt after 40 km/1200mt done from Cuorgnè. Last 2km challenging with cold headwinds. Tips: I left very early (6.30 AM), sun was down and the first 30 km at low height were not too hot, and traffic scarce. I descended slowly till Ceresole as climbing drivers tend to occupy all the road and marmots may suddenly cross the road (if quiet). Last water refill in Ceresole or... you can drink from the rivers.
In the top 3 of the most beautiful climbs ever done. A bit busy but the view at the top is something unparalleled. Impossible to go down the other side on a road bike. Definitely worth doing and doing again. You can also start from Locanda, a very relaxing and pleasant descent. Numerous refreshments, especially in the first 10/15 km.
Nella top 3 delle salite più belle mai fatte. Un pochino trafficata ma la vista in cima è qualcosa di impareggiabile. Impossibile scendere dal lato opposto con la bici da corsa. Sicuramente da fare e rifare. Si può partire anche da Locanda, discesa molto rilassante e piacevole. Numerosi ristori soprattutto nei primi 10/15 km.

Wonderful climb, according to many even the most beautiful. As far as I am concerned, this one certainly comes close. The first part is hardly special, but once you pass Ceresole Reale, the real climb begins. The percentages skyrocket and the environment becomes more worthwhile every kilometre. The photos speak for themselves I think. Highly recommended!

Het eerste gedeelte is nauwelijks bijzonder te noemen, maar zodra je Ceresole Reale passeert, begint de echte klim. De percentages schieten de lucht in en de omgeving wordt elke kilometer meer de moeite waard. De foto's spreken boekdelen me dunkt. Aanrader!
What a climb! In my opinion, one of the most beautiful climbs in Europe. Due to its length and the still steep percentages, it is a really tough climb. Not to be underestimated, but worth it in all respects.
The climb actually begins where you begin. I have done this climb from Ivrea and then you have some extra climbing kilometres because you already slightly go up in the valley. These first few kilometres are not difficult at all. After Locana, there are a few bumps, but they are not really worth mentioning. As soon as you leave Noasca, just before you enter the tunnel, take the smaller road to the left of the tunnel. This stretch is called the Passaggio di Tappa and takes you around the tunnel. This road is beautiful and runs along the fast-flowing river. There are rapids and waterfalls everywhere. The route is littered with large boulders where you can watch mountaineers bouldering. This part of the route is not only beautiful, it is also extremely steep. It is a bit stepped which reduces the average percentage of the climb. Nevertheless, there are some sections that are over 15％. This part of the route is free of motorised traffic. As soon as you pass the barrier, you enter the valley again and it flattens out. On your left hand side there is a beautifully situated campsite with a cyclist café. If you want a coffee, this is a nice place.
Until Ceresole Reale, you have some peace and quiet. After this village, the road slowly starts to climb. You still have a nice view of the first lake, but then you really have to work. After a long straight stretch, you come to the first of the two hairpin sections. You also pass the 2000-metre mark here and that does not make this section easy. The kilometres are also felt here, as you start the last of the three thirds. The views of the mountain peaks are already beautiful here, and you can see the many curves above you. I found this part very tough because the wind was very strong. You have whole sections of the climb and the wind against you, which is a very strange experience. Here I came for the first time climbers who 'ploft' were. Until the top, this does not stop. Anyone who has done high climbs like the Galibier, Stelvio or the Bonette knows what I mean. People crying, people turning around and especially people sitting down to take a breather. After this part, you come out at the reservoir and there you get a little rest before you start the second hairpin section. Here, the beauty of this climb becomes more and more apparent as you get an ever more beautiful view of the lakes below. Give the occasional lesser climber a push if you are not in a hurry, it is appreciated. Many climbers really fight to get to the top here. I found this part less difficult than the first group of hairpin bends, maybe it is also because the view is numbing. All of a sudden, after a bend, comes the sign that you are on the pass. I thought I still had a few kilometres to go, there is no indication anywhere on the climb how far the top is.
Past the top, you can descend for a kilometre or so to the mountain hut there for a drink or snack. This kilometre you will have to go up again later on, my calves did not agree with that despite the Fanta.
I have done the climb on a Saturday in September and I found the crowds not so bad. The first part is driven very fast because it is a through road. From Noasca onwards, I found it quite okay for a Saturday.
- One water bottle is enough, you come across dozens of water points.
- I have only seen one bakery for a sandwich, no supermarket. So take some bars with you or eat a pasta in a restaurant. There are plenty of them along the way.
- Bring a light because you will pass several short tunnels.
- Despite the fact that it was 30 degrees at the bottom of the climb, it was very cold at the top. Arm sleeves and a vest or jacket are really necessary.
- If you have the opportunity, try to plan this climb on the clearest day of the week. Blue skies and nice clear weather really do this climb justice.
- If you are not going for a time, try to enjoy and look around on the way. So many people are just ploughing to get to the top and just look at the ground.
- If you are that person who has a bit left on the road and you see someone really ploughing as you overtake them, give them a little push. It's appreciated and people get a boost.
Wat een klim! Wat mij betreft een van de mooiste beklimmingen in Europa. Door de lengte en de toch pittige percentages ook echt een stevige klim. Niet te onderschatten, maar is het in alle opzichten waard.
De klim begint eigenlijk gewoon waar jij begint. Ik heb deze beklimming gedaan vanuit Ivrea en dan heb je er nog wel wat extra klimkilometers bij omdat je het dal in al steeds lichtjes omhoog gaat. Deze eerste kilometers zijn nergens moeilijk. Na Locana komen wat hobbels, maar dat mag echt geen naam hebben. Zodra je Noasca uit bent sla je vlak voordat je daar de tunnel in rijdt de kleinere weg links van de tunnel in. Dit stuk heet de Passaggio di Tappa en leidt je om de tunnel heen. Deze weg is prachtig en loopt langs de snelstromende rivier. Overal zie je stroomversnellingen en watervallen. De route ligt bezaaid met grote rotsblokken waar je bergbeklimmers kunt bekijken die aan het boulderen zijn. Dit deel van de route is naast prachtig ook gewoon donders steil. Het loopt een beetje trapsgewijs waardoor het gemiddelde stijgingspercentage wat gedrukt wordt. Toch zitten er gewoon stukken van boven de 15％ tussen. Dit deel van de route is vrij van gemotoriseerd verkeer. Zodra je de slagboom passeert rij je de vallei weer in en vlak het af. Aan je linkerhand zit een prachtig gelegen camping met een fietserscafé. Mocht je even een koffietje willen is dit een mooie plek.
Tot Ceresole Reale heb je even rust. Na dit dorpje begint het langzaamaan steeds meer te stijgen. Je hebt nog een mooie blik op het eerste meer, maar daarna moet je echt aan de bak. Na een wat lang vrij recht lopend stuk kom je bij het eerste van de twee haarspeldsecties. Je passeert hier ook de 2000 meter grens en dat maakt dit deel niet makkelijk. De kilometers laten zich hier ook voelen, je begint aan de laatste van de drie derde delen. De uitzichten op de bergtoppen worden hier al prachtig, en je ziet boven je de vele bochten liggen. Dit deel vond ik erg pittig omdat het er erg hard waait. Je hebt hele stukken de klim én de wind tegen, wat een hele vreemde ervaring is. Hier kwam ik ook voor het eerst klimmers tegen die 'geploft' waren. Tot de top stopt dit niet meer. Een ieder die hoge klimmen als de Galibier, Stelvio of de Bonette heeft gedaan weet wat ik bedoel. Huilende mensen, mensen die omdraaien en vooral mensen die even gaan zitten om uit te puffen. Je komt na dit deel uit bij het stuwmeer en daar krijg je een klein beetje rust voordat je aan de tweede haarspeldsectie gaat beginnen. Hier wordt de pracht van deze klim steeds meer zichtbaar als je een steeds mooiere blik op de meren onder je krijgt. Geef af en toe een mindere klimmer een duwtje als je geen haast hebt, dat wordt gewaardeerd. Veel klimmers strijden hier echt om de top te halen. Dit deel vond ik minder moeilijk dan de eerste groep haarspeldbochten, misschien komt het ook omdat het uitzicht verdooft. Geheel plotseling komt er na een bocht het bord dat je op de pas bent. Ik dacht dat ik nog een paar kilometers moest, er is nergens op de klim ook maar enige indicatie te vinden hoe ver de top is.
Voorbij de top kan je een kilometer ofzo afdalen naar de berghut aldaar voor een drankje of hapje. Deze kilometer moet je straks wel weer omhoog, mijn kuiten waren het daar ondanks de Fanta niet mee eens.
Ik heb de klim gedaan op een zaterdag in September en ik vond de drukte heel erg meevallen. Het eerste deel wordt hard gereden omdat het een doorgaande weg is. Vanaf Noasca vond ik het best heel okay voor een zaterdag.
- één bidon is voldoende, je komt tientallen waterpunten tegen
- ik heb maar één bakker gezien voor een broodje, geen supermarkt. Dus neem reepjes mee of eet een pasta in een restaurantje. Er zijn er onderweg plenty.
- lampjes mee omdat je meerdere korte tunnels passeert
- ondanks dat het beneden dik 30 graden was, was het op de top goed koud. Armstukken en een hesje of een jasje zijn echt nodig.
- als je de mogelijkheid hebt, probeer dan deze klim te plannen op de helderste dag van de week. Blauwe luchten en mooi helder weer doen deze klim echt eer aan.
- als je niet voor een tijd gaat, probeer dan onderweg ook genoeg te genieten en rond te kijken. Zoveel mensen zijn maar aan het ploegen om boven te geraken an kijken alleen maar naar de grond.
- ben je die persoon die nog wat over heeft onderweg en je ziet iemand echt ploegen als je hem of haar inhaalt, geef een klein duwtje. Dat wordt gewaardeerd en mensen leven even helemaal op.

Camping in Ceresole Reale, I first went down to Locana to climb the whole pass... and it is absolutely necessary to do the whole pass!
Because from Locana to Noasca, it's the warm up... 45 min with some inclines... and here we go, the famous 4 laces (finally easy) and the MAGNIFICENT climb on the old road... don't take the tunnel, the road is well rebuilt since the Giro 19 and it's closed to the traffic... so we're between bikers and hikers.... Along the river... it's superb... and a VERY big ramp... I think it's the place I preferred.
After that we go on to the "high mountain". The km before the lake are certainly the hardest... after the 2 lakes, that's what I like about the big passes... at each turn you think you've arrived... you don't see how you can go higher... and yet... it goes on!
At the finish I join 2 Italians (father and son)... the father 76 years old!!! With a triple in front... but still... Bravissimo !
The weather was gloomy, so the higher I got the wetter and colder it got... I had planned to wear long sleeves but not plastic... in my opinion, it's imperative to take them unless the weather is great... so I got cold on the way down.

Be careful NOT to do it on the WE... lots of people... including on Sunday when the road is "closed" but only from the silviu lake to the summit...

Réalisé en juillet 2022.
Campant à Ceresole Reale, je suis d’abord descendu jusque Locana pour remonter l’ensemble du col… et il faut absolument faire l’ensemble !
Car de Locana à Noasca, c’est l’échauffement… 45 min avec quelques inclinaisons… et la c’est parti, les fameux 4 lacets(finalement facile) et la MAGNIFIQUE montée sur l’ancienne route… ne pas prendre le tunnel, la route est bien refaite depuis le Giro 19 et elle est fermée à la circulation… du fait on est entre cyclistes et randonneurs…. Le long de la rivière… c’est superbe… et une TRÈS grosse rampe… je crois que c’est l’endroit que j’ai préféré.
Après on enchaine par la « haute montagne ». Les km avant le lac sont certainement les plus durs… après les 2 lacs, c’est ce que j’aime dans les grands cols… à chaque virage on croit qu’on est arrivé… on ne voit pas comment on peu aller plus haut… et pourtant… ça continue!
A l’arrivée je rejoins 2 italiens (père et fils)… le père 76 ans!!! Avec un triple devant… mais quand même.. Bravissimo !
Il faisait un temps maussade, du fait plus je m’élevais plus il faisais humide et froid… j’avais prévu les manches longues mais pas le plastique… à mon avis à prendre impératif sauf si grand beau… du coup j’ai eut froid à la descente.
Fait un vendredi… impeccable
Attention NE PAS faire le WE… beaucoup de monde.. y compris le dimanche ou la route est « fermée « mais que du lac du silviu au sommet…
Pas le plus dur mais assurément le col le plus long que j’ai fait

A long ascent but that repays all the effort when you reach the top: breathtaking views.... d'after all it is the Gran Paradiso and never was the name more apt.

Not an easy climb but very beautiful. If it is hot, it is best to look for the shade and the side of the water if you are riding uphill on your bike. One can then find a little cooling. The climb consists of a few steps: false flat and steep percentages. In some places there are a lot of tourists, but you do not see much traffic. There is a special road for cyclists just before the tunnel. Don't underestimate this part though because the percentages can be murderous. This road is only accessible for cyclists and was built especially for the Giro.
Geen gemakkelijke beklimming maar wel erg mooi. Als het warm is best de schaduwkanten en de kant van het water opzoeken als men bergop rijdt met de fiets. Men kan dan toch een beetje verkoeling vinden. De beklimming bestaat uit een paar trapjes: valsplat en steile percentages. Op sommige plaatsen zijn er erg veel toeristen, maar toch zie je er niet veel verkeer. Er is een speciale weg voor fietsers net voor de tunnel. Onderschat dit deel echter niet want de percentages kunnen toch moordend zijn. Deze weg is bovendien enkel toegankelijk voor fietsers en werd speciaal voor de Giro aangelegd.

Last summer 2020 (yes, the one of COVID-19), my cycling buddy and I proposed this climb as the final climb of our trip through northern Italy. We had to consult several sources to come to this decision, because obviously you want to end with a bang. The passage of the Giro on this climb in 2019 (winner: Ilnur Zakarin) has certainly played a role in this.
The climb officially starts in the village of Locana (±45min drive from Turin) and you'll find a large parking lot.... with a supply of nice cool spring water!
The climb starts easy, it goes slightly uphill at a very moderate percentage of 2-3％ for 10km. You have to wait until you reach the village of Noasca, where you will find the first hairpin bends of this climb. Just after the village, the cyclist will have the choice to follow the main road or to take a side road. Online, you'll find many bad experiences about this side path, but I can reassure you that these experiences date from the era that the side path was not yet asphalted. The side trail was rebuilt and provided with a perfect layer of asphalt especially for the passage of the Giro. It is a must to take this side road as a cyclist, since the main road goes through a poorly lit tunnel for 3km and at percentages above 8％ (nice for the descent).
The side path is not a relief for the percentages, you will undoubtedly get out of the saddle for the first time, because the percentages are continuously in the double digits.
Once you survived the first obstacle, you continue the climb towards the lake of Ceresole Reale, where you can enjoy a flat stretch and get ready for the second half of the climb.
From this point the real climbing to the top begins. You drive automatically into the "Parco Nazionale Gran Paradiso". The latter has really not stolen its name, it is a beautiful nature reserve where you prefer not to cycle too fast. Fortunately, this is not possible because it is still going uphill at an average rate of 4 to 7％. Before you know it, you reach an altitude of 1800m and you notice that the trees disappear. The percentages increase again to double digits and a series of hairpin turns follows, towards the Serrù reservoir. It was here that the Giro organization decided to draw the finish line of the 13th stage in 2019.
However, this is not yet the top of the climb, as there's still about 5 kilometers left. Leaving the reservoir of Serrù behind, a small descent follows to another lake: Lago Agnel.
This is when you realize that this beautiful climb is almost over. If you are still in good shape, don't hesitate to increase the resistance and steam to the top.
When you reach the top you will realize what an achievement you have just delivered: 40km of climbing (from Locana) with an altitude difference of 2100+ meters.
In short, this climb has really everything: length, height, steep and less steep parts, hairpin bends, good tarmac, tunnels and especially ... beautiful views!
Afgelopen zomer 2020 (ja, die van COVID-19) hebben mijn fietsmaat en ik deze beklimming aangestipt als slotklim van onze reis doorheen Noord-Italië. We hebben verschillende bronnen moeten raadplegen om tot dit besluit te komen, want je wilt uiteraard eindigen met een knaller. De passage van de Giro op deze klim in 2019 (winnaar: Ilnur Zakarin) heeft hier zeer zeker een rol in gespeeld.
De klim start officieel in het dorpje Locana (±45min rijden van Turijn) en je zal er een grote parking aantreffen... met een voorziening voor lekker koel bronwater!
De klim begint rustig, het loopt lichtjes bergop aan een heel gematigd percentage van 2-3％ gedurende 10km. Het is wachten tot het dorpje Noasca, waar je de eerste haarspeldbochten van deze klim zult aantreffen. Net na het dorpje krijg je als fietser de keuze om de grote weg te vervolgen of om een zijpad in te slaan. Online vind je veel slechte ervaringen over dit zijpad terug, maar ik kan jullie gerust stellen dat deze ervaringen dateren van het tijdperk dat het zijpad nog niet was geasfalteerd. Het zijpad werd speciaal voor de passage van de Giro opnieuw aangelegd en voorzien van een perfecte laag asfalt. Het is een must om dit zijpad als fietser in te slaan, aangezien de grote weg doorheen een slecht verlichte tunnel gaat gedurende 3km en aan percentages van boven de 8％ (leuk voor de afdaling naar beneden ).
Het zijpad is echter niet een verlichting van de percentages, je zult er ongetwijfeld een eerste keer uit het zadel gaan komen, want de percentages zijn continu in de dubbele cijfers.
Eenmaal het eerste obstakel overleefd, zet je de klim voort richting het meer van Ceresole Reale, waar je even kan genieten van een vlak stuk en jezelf kan klaarmaken voor de 2e helft van de klim.
Vanaf dit punt begint het echte klimwerk richting de top. Je rijdt vanzelf het "Parco Nazionale Gran Paradiso" in. Deze laatste heeft zijn naam echt niet gestolen, het is een prachtig natuurgebied waar je het liefst niet te snel doorheen wilt fietsen. Gelukkig kan dit ook niet want het gaat nog steeds bergop aan een gemiddeld percentage van 4 à 7％. Voor je het weet, tik je een hoogte aan van 1800m en merk je dat de bomen verdwijnen. De percentages dikken weer aan naar dubbele cijfers en er volgt een serie haarspeldbochten, richting het stuwmeer Serrù. Het was hier dat de Giro organisatie besloot om in 2019 de eindstreep van de 13e etappe te trekken.
Dit is echter nog niet de top van de beklimming, er resteert immers nog een 5tal kilometer. Als je het stuwmeer van Serrù achter je laat, volgt er een kleine afdaling naar een andere meer: Lago Agnel.
Het is hier dat je het besef krijgt dat deze mooie klim bijna is afgelopen. Als je nog goed zit, aarzel dan niet om het verzet nog eens te verzwaren en vol door te stomen naar de top.
Bij het bereiken van de top besef je pas wat voor een prestatie je net hebt geleverd: 40km klimmen (vanuit Locana) met een hoogteverschil van 2100+meter.
Kortom, deze klim heeft werkelijk alles: lengte, hoogte, steile en minder steile stukken, haarspeldbochten, goed asfalt, tunnels en vooral… mooie uitzichten!
