One of the most beautiful climbs I know... done in October 2023 with zero traffic and a couple of foxes waiting for me at the col... priceless. The climb is tough, there's no denying it, but it's so beautiful in terms of the scenery that the fatigue is gone! Unmissable

Cycled one of the few paved roads that climb high into the heart of the Parco Nazionale Gran Paradiso in Piedmont in early September 2024.
Started in my residence Locana courtesy of the B&B manager who gave me the green light on a drizzly morning after consulting webcams and local mountain weather sites following a night of torrential rain and heavy thunderstorms.
The first part of the route follows the national park border and the Orco River from village to village, climbing gently with two exceptions. -Supply on the way from Ceresole Reale only water sources.
-First Monday in September there was hardly any traffic.
Summer months are touristy very busy but there are auto&moto restrictions some days.
-The climb is only open for a limited period of the year!

Conclusion:
Finding a climb more famous and well-known than this one is easy,but finding a nicer col becomes a whole lot harder!!!!

Eén van de weinige geasfalteerde wegen die hoog opklimmen in het hart van het Parco Nazionale Gran Paradiso in Piëmonte gefietst begin september 2024.
Gestart in mijn verblijfplaats Locana met dank aan de B&B uitbaatster die mij groen licht gaf op een druilige voormiddag na het raadplegen van de webcams en lokale bergweer sites volgend op een nacht met stortregens en zware onweders.

Smalle weg waarlangs met toenemende hoogte de houten sneeuwhoogte palen en vangrails verdwijnen en alleen witte lijnen het asfalt zullen begrenzen.
Prachtige bochtenreeks wringt zich naar omhoog tussen rotspartijen, watervallen, langs stuwmeer Serru en over de stuwdam van Lago Agnel. Route kronkelt eindeloos verder en sommige kilometers flirten toch met de 10%. De huppelende fluitende marmotten en een kudde overstekende steenbokken zorgden voor afleiding.
Desolate top bereiken was emotioneel voor mij door de overdonderende natuurpracht en de door lengte en hoogte behoorlijk zware fysieke inspanning.
Maar hier past maar één advies voor alle bergfietsers. Eender welke conditie, hier moet je ooit boven staan!

Praktisch:
-Die dag veel bewolking (zie foto's) die gelukkig regelmatig open trok maar zorgde voor serieuze temperatuurdaling.
Extra kleding was geen luxe , zeker in de afdaling.
-Bevoorrading onderweg vanaf Ceresole Reale alleen waterbronnetjes.
-Eerste maandag van september was er amper verkeer.
Zomermaanden zijn toeristisch erg druk maar er zijn sommige dagen auto&moto beperkingen.
-De klim is maar beperkte periode van het jaar open!

Conclusie:
Een beklimming vinden die beroemder en bekender is dan deze is makkelijk,maar een mooiere col vinden wordt een heel pak moeilijker!!!!
De MOOISTE voor mij persoonlijk,en ik heb al heel wat achter de wielen.

From the other side (Le Pont) there is an alpine path that can be hike-a-biked until you reach the old military road (not really a road at all) which brings you for 7 km across a wide mountain col/plateau until you pick up the real road and ride down the route described here. Did it at night as part of the 3 peaks bike race and it was one of the hardest things I've done on a bike - absolutely freezing riding down at 03:00. Toptip,- take a pair of trainers, I absolutely destroyed an expensive pair of bike shoes.

Tout va bien jusqu'à Locana où la pente se prononce un peu, ensuite les choses se compliquent avec la route qui devient plus étroite et les Italiens qui vous frôlent et qui roulent vite.
Passage à 12% de 1km en ligne droite avant Noasca ca commence!
Puis à l'entrée du tunel prendre à gauche la vieille route très sauvage et très pentue avec un petit 12% sur 2 kms non stop. Cadre de rêve la route serpente dans les rochers jusqu'à récupérer la sortie du tunel, cette partie est vraiment très raide c'est un mur, prévoir le braquet en conséquence.
Puis petits lacets à 12%, cascade magnifique dans le village sur votre droite photo obligatoire avant de rejoindre le lac et Ceresole Reale havre de paix avec petits restos et son ambiance village de montagne.
Petite descente de 1 km pour faire croire que tout va bien et la c'est 10kms non stop à 10% qui vous attendent jusqu'au barrage, avec des passages à 12%, 13% et même un 17% pour corser un peu le tout un peu avant le barrage.
Pensez à vous recharger en eau au pied de la bosse (juste après le camping) , c'est la dernière fontaine avant le sommet!
Au barrage c'est splendide on embrasse tout le parc du Grand Paradis.
Petite descente de 40m de dénivelé pour reprendre l'ascension finale de 6kms à 7% 8% qui vous en paraissent 12% avec l'altitude et un vent à arracher la queue des ânes, attention à rester lucide.

The hard part is from Ceresole as you need to climb 1000+ mt after 40 km/1200mt done from Cuorgnè. Last 2km challenging with cold headwinds. Tips: I left very early (6.30 AM), sun was down and the first 30 km at low height were not too hot, and traffic scarce. I descended slowly till Ceresole as climbing drivers tend to occupy all the road and marmots may suddenly cross the road (if quiet). Last water refill in Ceresole or... you can drink from the rivers.

De klim begint eigenlijk gewoon waar jij begint. Ik heb deze beklimming gedaan vanuit Ivrea en dan heb je er nog wel wat extra klimkilometers bij omdat je het dal in al steeds lichtjes omhoog gaat. Deze eerste kilometers zijn nergens moeilijk. Na Locana komen wat hobbels, maar dat mag echt geen naam hebben. Zodra je Noasca uit bent sla je vlak voordat je daar de tunnel in rijdt de kleinere weg links van de tunnel in. Dit stuk heet de Passaggio di Tappa en leidt je om de tunnel heen. Deze weg is prachtig en loopt langs de snelstromende rivier. Overal zie je stroomversnellingen en watervallen. De route ligt bezaaid met grote rotsblokken waar je bergbeklimmers kunt bekijken die aan het boulderen zijn. Dit deel van de route is naast prachtig ook gewoon donders steil. Het loopt een beetje trapsgewijs waardoor het gemiddelde stijgingspercentage wat gedrukt wordt. Toch zitten er gewoon stukken van boven de 15% tussen. De kilometers laten zich hier ook voelen, je begint aan de laatste van de drie derde delen. De uitzichten op de bergtoppen worden hier al prachtig, en je ziet boven je de vele bochten liggen. Dit deel vond ik erg pittig omdat het er erg hard waait. Je hebt hele stukken de klim én de wind tegen, wat een hele vreemde ervaring is. Hier kwam ik ook voor het eerst klimmers tegen die 'geploft' waren. Tot de top stopt dit niet meer. Een ieder die hoge klimmen als de Galibier, Stelvio of de Bonette heeft gedaan weet wat ik bedoel. Huilende mensen, mensen die omdraaien en vooral mensen die even gaan zitten om uit te puffen. Je komt na dit deel uit bij het stuwmeer en daar krijg je een klein beetje rust voordat je aan de tweede haarspeldsectie gaat beginnen. Hier wordt de pracht van deze klim steeds meer zichtbaar als je een steeds mooiere blik op de meren onder je krijgt. Geef af en toe een mindere klimmer een duwtje als je geen haast hebt, dat wordt gewaardeerd. Veel klimmers strijden hier echt om de top te halen. Dit deel vond ik minder moeilijk dan de eerste groep haarspeldbochten, misschien komt het ook omdat het uitzicht verdooft. Geheel plotseling komt er na een bocht het bord dat je op de pas bent. Ik dacht dat ik nog een paar kilometers moest, er is nergens op de klim ook maar enige indicatie te vinden hoe ver de top is.
Voorbij de top kan je een kilometer ofzo afdalen naar de berghut aldaar voor een drankje of hapje. Deze kilometer moet je straks wel weer omhoog, mijn kuiten waren het daar ondanks de Fanta niet mee eens.
Ik heb de klim gedaan op een zaterdag in September en ik vond de drukte heel erg meevallen. Het eerste deel wordt hard gereden omdat het een doorgaande weg is. Vanaf Noasca vond ik het best heel okay voor een zaterdag.
- één bidon is voldoende, je komt tientallen waterpunten tegen
- ik heb maar één bakker gezien voor een broodje, geen supermarkt. Dus neem reepjes mee of eet een pasta in een restaurantje. Er zijn er onderweg plenty.
- lampjes mee omdat je meerdere korte tunnels passeert
- ondanks dat het beneden dik 30 graden was, was het op de top goed koud. Armstukken en een hesje of een jasje zijn echt nodig.
- als je de mogelijkheid hebt, probeer dan deze klim te plannen op de helderste dag van de week. Blauwe luchten en mooi helder weer doen deze klim echt eer aan.
- als je niet voor een tijd gaat, probeer dan onderweg ook genoeg te genieten en rond te kijken. Zoveel mensen zijn maar aan het ploegen om boven te geraken an kijken alleen maar naar de grond.
- ben je die persoon die nog wat over heeft onderweg en je ziet iemand echt ploegen als je hem of haar inhaalt, geef een klein duwtje. Dat wordt gewaardeerd en mensen leven even helemaal op.

Réalisé en juillet 2022.
Campant à Ceresole Reale, je suis d’abord descendu jusque Locana pour remonter l’ensemble du col… et il faut absolument faire l’ensemble !
Car de Locana à Noasca, c’est l’échauffement… 45 min avec quelques inclinaisons… et la c’est parti, les fameux 4 lacets(finalement facile) et la MAGNIFIQUE montée sur l’ancienne route… ne pas prendre le tunnel, la route est bien refaite depuis le Giro 19 et elle est fermée à la circulation… du fait on est entre cyclistes et randonneurs…. Le long de la rivière… c’est superbe… et une TRÈS grosse rampe… je crois que c’est l’endroit que j’ai préféré.
Après on enchaine par la « haute montagne ». Les km avant le lac sont certainement les plus durs… après les 2 lacs, c’est ce que j’aime dans les grands cols… à chaque virage on croit qu’on est arrivé… on ne voit pas comment on peu aller plus haut… et pourtant… ça continue!
A l’arrivée je rejoins 2 italiens (père et fils)… le père 76 ans!!! Avec un triple devant… mais quand même.. Bravissimo !
Il faisait un temps maussade, du fait plus je m’élevais plus il faisais humide et froid… j’avais prévu les manches longues mais pas le plastique… à mon avis à prendre impératif sauf si grand beau… du coup j’ai eut froid à la descente.
Fait un vendredi… impeccable
Attention NE PAS faire le WE… beaucoup de monde.. y compris le dimanche ou la route est « fermée «  mais que du lac du silviu au sommet…
Pas le plus dur mais assurément le col le plus long que j’ai fait

De klim start officieel in het dorpje Locana (±45min rijden van Turijn) en je zal er een grote parking aantreffen... met een voorziening voor lekker koel bronwater!
De klim begint rustig, het loopt lichtjes bergop aan een heel gematigd percentage van 2-3% gedurende 10km. Het is wachten tot het dorpje Noasca, waar je de eerste haarspeldbochten van deze klim zult aantreffen. Net na het dorpje krijg je als fietser de keuze om de grote weg te vervolgen of om een zijpad in te slaan. Online vind je veel slechte ervaringen over dit zijpad terug, maar ik kan jullie gerust stellen dat deze ervaringen dateren van het tijdperk dat het zijpad nog niet was geasfalteerd. Het zijpad werd speciaal voor de passage van de Giro opnieuw aangelegd en voorzien van een perfecte laag asfalt. Deze laatste heeft zijn naam echt niet gestolen, het is een prachtig natuurgebied waar je het liefst niet te snel doorheen wilt fietsen. Gelukkig kan dit ook niet want het gaat nog steeds bergop aan een gemiddeld percentage van 4 à 7%. Voor je het weet, tik je een hoogte aan van 1800m en merk je dat de bomen verdwijnen. De percentages dikken weer aan naar dubbele cijfers en er volgt een serie haarspeldbochten, richting het stuwmeer Serrù. Het was hier dat de Giro organisatie besloot om in 2019 de eindstreep van de 13e etappe te trekken.
Dit is echter nog niet de top van de beklimming, er resteert immers nog een 5tal kilometer. Als je het stuwmeer van Serrù achter je laat, volgt er een kleine afdaling naar een andere meer: Lago Agnel.
