Climbed in August 2024.

This side (from Embrun) is doable on a gravel bike, but definitely not on a road bike.

The unpaved section was in pretty good shape. The occasional big stone but mostly pretty tight gravel. The unpaved part is really gorgeous and not inferior to the other (more famous side).

If you take the gravel bike, you will have to descend the same side. The other side is in much worse condition. Even with my fully equipped dropper I had to be careful.

It is true that the tunnel is officially closed, but you can just get through. Take a good lamp with you though!

Deze kant (vanuit Embrun) is te doen met een gravelbike, maar zeker niet met een racefiets.

Het onverharde deel lag er best goed bij. Af en toe een grote steen maar meestal vrij strak gravel. Het onverharde deel is werkelijk schitterend en doet niet onder voor de andere (meer beroemde kant).

Pak je de gravelbike zul je wel dezelfde kant af moeten dalen. De andere kant is namelijk in véél slechtere conditie. Zelfs met mijn fully met dropper moest ik opletten.

Het klopt dat de tunnel officieel dicht is, maar je kunt er gewoon doorheen. Wel een goede lamp meenemen!

Je m’apprête à valider mon ascension du col du Parpaillon que pourtant je n’ai pas pu finir. Bloqué à 3 km du tunnel par la neige infranchissable qui est encore très présente au dessus de 2300m.

Les paysages autour de Crévoux et de La Chalp sont majestueux.
La première portion qui va jusqu’à la Cabane des Espagnols est toute mignonne mais elle grimpe bien. L’histoire de cette cabane et de sa raison d’être est touchante. Ce tronçon est praticable sans souci. Le chemin est exigeant mais en même temps tellement agréable. Calme, couleurs, végétation, vues, tout est au rendez-vous.
Ce 24 mai, au dessus de la cabane, la route était barrée et interdite.
Dès lors, le revêtement se dégrade nettement . On se retrouve à rouler sur un tapis d’aiguilles de pins de couleur ocre orangé qui se marient avec des cailloux gris plutôt inoffensifs. Mais, attention, on est tout de même contraint de regarder où l’on pose sa roue avant.
C’est un terrain de jeu que tout le monde appelle Gravel aujourd’hui, mais je suis passé avec des Continental 4 saisons en 23mm.
À cette saison, la neige n’est jamais loin et le décor est enchanteur.
J’oublie de parler des quelques arbres déracinés qui obstruent le chemin… Un petit goût d’aventure. On est loin de la N94 et c’est tant mieux.
Non, Le Tour de France n’est pas prêt de passer par là et c’est bien dommage !
Ou, c’est tant mieux aussi ?
J’hésite entre la frustration d’avoir été stoppé par la neige et le plaisir d’avoir grimpé dans ces conditions climatiques un peu magiques.

Aan beide kanten een mooi desolaat landschap met fantastisch uitzicht.
