Remember this one as we ride up to the top on ful- suspension MTB. Then down to Le Serre Barbin on the moutain side. A nice ride back in early 2000s.
The black beast of the Briançonnaias. Honestly, it is challenging, with double-digit gradients for almost the entire route. In the second part, the views are beautiful and the valley is open and cool. Definitely worth doing.
La bestia nera del Briançonnaias. Onestamente, è impegnativo, con pendenze a due cifre per quasi tutto il percorso. Nella seconda parte i panorami sono bellissimi e la valle aperta e fresca. Da fare assolutamente.
The Granon! Well...
Until then, I'd avoided it. It's intimidating with its average percentage of over 9％.
In the meantime, I climbed Col Luitel and Mont Colombis. Close profiles. That's reassuring.
It's a tough climb up the Granon, but it has the elegance to offer a few very short, lighter sections of around thirty metres that feel good.
It's an exhausting climb, but at the same time a very enjoyable one. You never get bored. And then you find your rhythm and it doesn't go too badly.
The surface looks very good on the way up. But when you come back down, you realise that it's far from a billiard table and that on some sections, it's a bit shaky.
But it's a beautiful descent.
Watch out, you get into the swing of things and you can reach some pretty good speeds. I did a nice straight run...
Sumptuous scenery, especially as the snow was still there! The "Col du Granon" sign trying to emerge was graceful and touching.
And then the marmots...

Jusque là, je l’avais évité. Il est intimidant avec son pourcentage moyen à plus de 9％.
Entre temps, je suis allé grimper le col Luitel et le Mont Colombis. Profils proches. Ça rassure.
Elle est dure cette ascension du Granon, mais elle a l’élégance de proposer quelques très courts tronçons d’une trentaine de mètres plus légers qui font du bien.
C’est une montée qui use mais qui en même temps est très agréable. On ne s’ennuie jamais. Et puis, on trouve un rythme et ça se passe plutôt pas trop mal.
Le revêtement paraît très bon lors de la montée. Mais lorsque l’on redescend, on constate que c’est loin d’être un billard et que sur certains passages, ça secoue un peu.
Mais, elle est très belle cette descente.
Attention, on se prend au jeu et on peut atteindre de sacrées vitesses. J’ai fait un joli tout droit…
Paysages somptueux d’autant que la neige était encore là ! Cette pancarte « Col du Granon » qui tentait d’émerger, c’était gracieux et touchant.
Et puis, les marmottes…
Climbed in 2019, before it was in the 2022 Tour de France, and it was pleasantly calm then. It is a beautiful and tough climb, but really not as inhuman as the percentages make it seem: you find a rhythm quite easily, and there is nothing to take you out of that rhythm.
The road quality is not super, but enough to descend without worry.
Beklommen in 2019, voor hij in de Tour de France van 2022 zat, en toen was het er nog aangenaam kalm. Het is een prachtige en zware klim, maar echt niet zo onmenselijk als de percentages laten uitschijnen: je vindt er best makkelijk een ritme, en er is niets dat je uit dat ritme haalt.
De wegkwaliteit is niet super, maar voldoende om zonder zorgen af te dalen.
Road quality uphill is almost perfect from a racing bike point of view (Tour de France-capable). Downhill it bumps a bit sometimes, but still good to very good. The kilometre stones are also perfect.
Straßenqualität ist bergauf unter Rennradgesichtspunkten nahezu perfekt (Tour-de-France-fähig). Bergab holpert‘s machmal ein bisschen, aber immer noch gut bis sehr gut. Die Kilometersteine sind auch perfekt.
Done 6 or 7 years ago as part of a professional trip to Briançon.
Climbed at the end of the day, it was beautiful, it was grandiose, it was hard. It was the first time I really felt the difficulty of breathing after 2000m.
It's a cul-de-sac so there's nobody on the road.
It's a pass to do at all costs.
Fait il y a 6 ou 7 ans dans le cadre d'un déplacement pro sur Briançon.
Grimpé en toute fin de journée, c'était beau, c'était grandiose, c'était dur. C'est la première fois que j'ai vraiment ressenti les difficultés de respiration après 2000m.
C'est un cul-de-sac donc il n'y a personne sur la route.
C'est un col à faire à tout prix
Fantastic climb rediscovered partly because of the 2022 Tour. This climb offers everything: great panorama's along the way, steep pentes and a cosy place to eat/drink at the top. Highly recommended!

After the Izoard and the descent to Briançon, I knew I was going to have a hard time of it, but not to this extent ... In the laces between Villard Laté and Tronchets I hung on and thought it would be better higher up... It was a hell of a ride from the exit of the Tronchets to the summit, it doesn't disconnect, it's exhausting, it hurts my legs and head, you never see the end of it... But what a joy to have not given up and to have been able to see the sign at the top!
It's a really mental pass, you are in the grip of it for 11 kilometres without respite, that's what makes it so difficult!

Enchainé après l'Izoard et la redescente sur Briançon, je savais que j'allais en chier, mais pas a ce point ... Dans les lacets entre le Villard Laté et les Tronchets je me suis accroché et pensant que ça irait mieux plus haut ... Mal m'en a pris, ça été un enfer de la sortie des Tronchets au sommet, ça ne débranche pas, c'est usant, ça fait mal aux jambes et a la tête, on en voit jamais le bout ... Mais quel bonheur de ne pas avoir lâché et d'avoir pu voir le panneau au sommet !
C'est un col vraiment mental, on est en prise pendant 11 bornes sans répit, c'est ce qui fait sa difficulté !
Fantastic climb but very tough. Both steep and it takes you to 2450 metres altitude. You don't get time to recover anywhere along the way it is steeply uphill from the start and 8％ it rarely gets and they don't give any relief. But views and the little traffic completes it!
Fantastische klim maar zeer zwaar. Zowel steil en hij brengt je naar 2450 meter hoogte. Je krijgt onderweg nergens tijd om bij te komen het is van begin af aan steil omhoog en 8％ wordt het zelden en die geven geen verlichting. Maar uitzicht en het weinige verkeer maakt het helemaal af!
From Embrun to the Col du Granon driven. What a beautiful but tough climb you have no moment's rest 1x had to stop to my windbreaker to do I sat at about 2000 meters altitude and there was a cold wind once up it was enjoying the beautiful view and a cola and a delicious piece of raspberry pie what you can buy there at the restaurant among others. Definitely a must
Vanuit Embrun naar de Col du Granon gereden. Wat een mooie maar zware klim je hebt geen moment rust 1x moeten stoppen om mijn wind vestje aan te doen ik zat toen ongeveer op 2000 meter hoogte en er stond een koude wind eenmaal boven was het genieten van het mooie uitzicht en van een cola en een heerlijk stuk frambozen taartje wat je daar oa bij het restaurantje kunt kopen . Zeker een aanrader
Cycled this col in 2019. What a beautiful and tough climb this was! I didn't see the percentage dip below 5％ and here and there I even saw the 11 or 12％ hit (very regularly 9 or 10％). The view is beautiful and it is relatively quiet on the col, with cars that is. There were a lot of mosquitoes here, and they would not leave you alone once you got above the villages.
But the view and the steepness of the col ensure that you will not focus on this.
The road was very good (mind the small stones that come down here and there, especially when descending!).
The last 5 km, unfortunately, I did not see any col signs at the side of the road.
This climb is a must for anyone who likes a good challenge. As described above, it is an agony or a fun climb, depending on how much you have trained. In any case, it is not a col that I would take as the first one of the holiday...
Deze col gefietst in 2019. Wat een prachtige en zware klim was dit! Ik heb het percentage niet onder de 5％ zien duiken en hier en daar zelfs de 11 of 12％ zien aantikken (zeer regelmatig 9 of 10％). Het uitzicht is prachtig en het is relatief rustig op de col, met auto's wel te verstaan. Wat een muggen waren hier, en die laten je eenmaal boven de dorpjes ook niet meer met rust.
Maar het uitzicht en de steilheid van de col zorgen er wel voor dat je je hier niet op gaat focussen.
De weg was erg goed (denk hier en daar om kleine naar beneden gekomen steentjes, vooral bij het afdalen van belang!).
De laatste 5km heb ik helaas geen col-bordjes meer langs de kant van de weg gezien.
Deze klim is een aanrader voor iedereen die van een goede uitdaging houdt. Zoals hierboven beschreven is het een lijdensweg naar boven of een leuke klim, afhankelijk van hoeveel je getraind hebt. Het is in ieder geval niet een col die ik als eerste van de vakantie zou nemen...
Unheard of ascent ! Majestic within this massif, the Granon pass is splendid, calm and very hard!

Fantastic climb. You do not get much rest on the way. The percentages keep bothering you. The road is in reasonably good condition and the views and satisfaction at the end are what you do it for.
Fantastische beklimming. Je krijgt inderdaad weinig rust onderweg. De percentages blijven je lastig vallen. De weg is in een redelijke goede staat en het uitzicht en voldoening op het eind is waar je het voor doet.
One of the toughest cols in cycling in France. Only included in the Tour de France route for the second time, but for the second time cycling history was written with a capital letter. This col eventually leads to no man's land or a small military base. You do not get a minute's rest during the climb but you do get a beautiful view during almost the entire climb. The road is narrow but that makes it actually great climbing and almost traffic-free.
In 1986 at the first tour passage the Spaniard Eduardo Chozas of the Teka team won after a monster escape. Chozas was not the first to win, as he won a total of 4 tour stages, 3 stages in the Giro and 6th place in the final classification of the Tour.
But that day also ended the supremacy of Bernard Hinault who was taken over by Greg Lemond. Today Vingegaard and Jumbo Visma wrote an unlikely story about it.
A col you should definitely do if you like a challenge and are in the area.
Eén van de zwaarste cols in Frankrijk die deel uitmaakt van het wielrennen. Vandaag nog maar voor de tweede keer opgenomen in het parcours van de Tour de France, maar voor de tweede keer werd er Wielergeschiedenis met een hoofdletter geschreven. Deze col leidt uiteindelijk naar niemandsland of een kleine militaire basis. Je krijgt er geen minuut rust tijdens de beklimming maar wel een prachtig uitzicht gedurende bijna gans de klim. De weg is smal maar dat maakt het eigenlijk heerlijk klimmen en zo goed als verkeersvrij.
In 1986 bij de eerste tourpassage won de Spanjaard Eduardo Chozas van de Teka ploeg na een monsterontsnapping . Chozas was niet de eerste de beste want in totaal won hij 4 tourritten en 3 ritten in de giro en een 6de plaats in het eindklassement van de tour.
Maar die dag eindigde ook de suprematie van Bernard Hinault die door Greg Lemond werd overgenomen. Vandaag schreven Vingegaard en Jumbo Visma er een onwaarschijnlijk verhaal.
Een col die je zeker moet doen als je van een uitdaging houdt en in de buurt bent.
The climb has been resurfaced from bottom to top. Especially for the tour that will finish here on 13 July 2022. This makes it not only a nicer climb, but especially a descent. The view of the mountains of the Ecrins is breathtaking.
De klim is van beneden tot boven opnieuw geasfalteerd. Speciaal voor de tour die hier op 13 juli 2022 zal finishen. Dat maakt het niet alleen fijner klimmen, maar vooral dalen. Het uitzicht op de bergen van de Ecrins is adembenemend.
The Col de Granon in France is to me what the Angliru is to Spain: "a monster".
In 1986, this col was the magnificent setting for a piece of cycling history with Eduardo Chozas in a leading role. This Spanish top cyclist and now commentator for Eurosport won the 17th stage in legendary fashion for the Spanish Teka team after a fantastic exploit. A team that in 15 years in the professional peloton has won almost 1000 victories, final classifications, jerseys, cyclocross and track races. This col gives you nowhere to rest and with almost 20％ as steepest stretch it hurts you more and more every km.

In 1986 was deze col het schitterende decor voor een stukje wielergeschiedenis met Eduardo Chozas in een hoofdrol. Deze Spaanse toprenner en nu commentator voor Eurosport won er na een fantastisch exploot op legendarische wijze de 17e etappe voor het Spaanse Teka team. Een ploeg die in 15 jaar in het profpeloton bijna 1000 overwinningen, eindklassementen, truien , veldritten, baanwedstrijden won. Deze col geeft je nergens een rustmoment en met bijna 20％ als steilste strook doet hij je elke km meer en meer pijn.
I climbed one day in 2002 with an old Peugeot bike from the 80's, with mudguards and lighting (dynamo), but on which my bike shop had been able to install adequate gears in view of the climbs of the Briançonnais passes, including of course the Granon. I couldn't not ride the pass that had consecrated Greg LeMond and defeated Bernard Hinault one historic day in 1986.
I remember having passed a cyclist in pain who told me that he had a moral blow at the sight of my old bike :-) Beautiful scenery, already highlighted by the Dutch comments, and of course a constantly steep slope. At that time the road was in a rather average state, and narrow. Its profile reminded me of a pass I knew well, the Luitel... but with a summit located 1150 m higher !
Grimpé un jour de 2002 avec un vieux vélo Peugeot des années 80, à garde-boue et éclairage (à dynamo), mais sur lequel mon vélociste avait pu installer des braquets adéquats en vue des ascensions des cols du Briançonnais, dont bien sûr le Granon. Je ne pouvais pas ne pas faire le col qui avait consacré Greg LeMond et défait Bernard Hinault un jour historique de 1986.
Je me rappelle avoir dépassé un cycliste en souffrance qui m'a dit avoir pris un coup au moral à la vue de mon antique bécane :-) Magnifiques paysages, déjà soulignés par les commentaires néerlandophones, et bien sûr pente constamment raide. À l'époque la route était dans un état assez moyen, et étroite. Elle m'avait fait penser par son profil à un col que je connaissais bien, le Luitel… mais avec un sommet situé 1150 m plus haut !
This is for me the best of the big boys around Briançon. The climb is hard, there is nothing to hide behind. Save strength for when you enter the alpine meadows. Here, the steepness is almost continuously above 10 ％. The view in all directions is breathtaking. Every cyclist should have done this climb!
Dit is wat mij betreft de mooiste van de grote jongens rondom Briançon. De klim is hard, je kunt je hier nergens achter verschuilen. Hou kracht over voor als je de alpenweides infietst. Hier is de steilte zo goed als continu boven de 10 ％. Het uitzicht is elke kant op adembenemend. Deze klim moet iedere wielrenner eens gedaan hebben!
A climb with 2 faces; on the one hand this is a beautiful climb. Very quiet, and the scenery is beautiful. As soon as you get above the tree line, you can see the La Meije massif. On the other hand, this climb is really tough, it runs along the mountainside for 10 kilometers. You don't get a moment's rest once you drive up this climb, until you reach the top. The view at the top makes up for a lot.
Een klim met 2 gezichten; aan de ene kant is dit een schitterende klim. Erg rustig, en de natuurschoon is prachtig. Zodra je boven de boomgrens komt kun je zo op het La Meije massief kijken. Aan de andere kant is deze klim echt ontzettend pittig, hij loopt 10 kilometer lang ontzettend lomp langs de bergwand heen. Je krijgt zodra je deze klim op rijd geen enkel moment rust, totdat je boven bent. Het uitzicht op de top maakt dan weer veel goed.
When entering Briançon there are large banners saying "Terre de vélo" with underneath the silhouettes of the three big giants Galibier, Izoard and Granon.
This last one speaks less to the cycling imagination but was a relief for me after the tourist crowds of the two well-known classics.
The narrow road with hardly any traffic winds its way up for 10 km with percentages that flirt with the 10％ as cycling signs predict every kilometre.
The views of Briançon and the snowy peaks of the Ecrins National Park are fantastic. Above the tree line, the landscape becomes more barren and the wind has free reign in the high mountains. The last few turns before the summit, you pass military buildings. End point is parking lot with viewpoint and small rèfuge.
For me the most beautiful (and also the toughest) col from Briançon and this is saying something because the competition is big!
Op grote spandoeken bij het binnenrijden van Briançon staat "Terre de vélo" met daaronder de silhouetten van de drie grote kleppers Galibier, Izoard en Granon.
Deze laatste spreekt minder tot de wielerverbeelding maar was na de toeristische drukte van de twee overbekende klassiekers voor mij een verademing.
Dit wel figuurlijk want de smalle weg met amper verkeer slingert zich 10 km naar omhoog met percentages die steeds flirten met de 10％ zoals fietsinfobordjes je elke kilometer voorspellen.
Er is geen moment recuperatie maar de uitzichten op Briançon en de besneeuwde toppen van het Nationaal Park des Ecrins zijn fantastisch. Boven de boomgrens wordt het landschap kaler en krijgt de wind vrij spel in het hooggebergte.De laatste bochten voor de top passeert men nog militaire gebouwen. Eindpunt is parkeerplaats met uitzichtpunt en kleine rèfuge (bevoorrading).
Voor mij de mooiste (en ook de zwaartse ) col vanuit Briançon en dit wil wat zeggen want de concurrentie is groot!
In between of galibier and izoard, but don’t skip it! It’s a wonderful climb
Really a fantastic climb, you drive through the village and it gets steeper, in the beginning following hairpin turns. If you are not going for records take the time for some pictures because they are beautiful. The descent is very nice and fast. Road surface is not equally good everywhere but fine. Not a very wide road, but if you like a bit of risk you can't be kept up with by cars.
Echt een fantastische klim, je rijd door het dorpje uit en het word steed steiler, in het begin volgende haarspeldbochten elkaar snel op. Als je niet voor recordjes gaat neem de tijd voor wat fotos want het zijn prachtige plaatjes. De afdaling is heel mooi en snel. Wegdek niet overal even goed maar prima. Niet een hele brede weg, maar als je van een beetje risico houd ben je niet bij te houden door autos.
Beautiful, more beautiful, most beautiful. That's this climb in a beautiful setting. What a lovely climb. At some parts you are really on the move. Good road surface, but occasionally a tourist with a car so pay attention when descending.
Views during the climb are amazing and the top is a reward. I enjoyed it.
Mooi, mooier, mooist. Dat is deze klim in een prachtige omgeving. Wat een heerlijk klimwerk. Op sommige stukken ben je echt aan de beurt. Goed wegdek, wel af en toe een toerist met een auto dus opletten met afdalen.
Uitzichten tijdens de klim zijn waanzinnig mooi en de top is een beloning. Ik heb genoten.
Did this climb on 4-8-2019. Steep/heavy but fantastic climb. Sometimes the road is so steep you wonder what comes after the turn...mostly great views by the way! Good road surface. The view at the top is unforgettable! Do not forget to get a coke at the hut on top and to take possession of one of the deckchairs there. I myself had to cycle through Briancon to get to the bottom of the Granon, which was a bit of a problem. Bad roads in Briancon! And you have to go through the main road which leads to the Col de Lautaret, this is a busy road. But this climb absolutely take if in the neighborhood of Briancon are!
Op 4-8-2019 deze beklimming gedaan. Steile/zware maar fantastische klim. Soms is de weg zo steil dat je je afvraagt wat er na de bocht komt...meestal trouwens een fantastisch uitzicht! Goed wegdek. Het uitzicht op de top is onvergetelijk! Vergeet niet een colaatje te halen bij de hut bovenop en bezit te gaan nemen van één van de ligstoelen aldaar. Zelf moest ik eerst door Briancon fietsen om onderaan de Granon te komen, dat was wel minder. Slechte wegen in Briancon! En je moet een stuk via de grote weg welke naar de Col de Lautaret leidt, dit is een drukke weg. Maar deze beklimming absoluut meenemen als in in de buurt van Briancon bent!

Half September, we decided to do La boucle d'Izoard from Guillestre. When passing Briançon, we would also 'just' take col du Granon after the Izoard ... Talk about a total underestimation. Climbing with very nice views, no problem, but what a steepness! With 11km at just under 10% average, it was crawling up instead of cycling, but the satisfaction was all the greater when we reached the top! Keep in mind that there can be a strong headwind (we were unlucky ☹).
In the descent, watch out for the many potholes and gravel. The road surface is not as good as described above.
After 135 km of very hard kilometers, we arrived tired but satisfied at our apartment in Mont Dauphin (the climb towards it is also a hard one, about 2 km long)
Half september besloten we La boucle d’Izoard te doen vanuit Guillestre. Bij het passeren in Briançon zouden we col du Granon ook ‘eventjes’ meenemen na de Izoard… Van een totale onderschatting gesproken. Klim met hele mooie uitzichten, daar niet van, maar wat een stijgingspercentages!! Met 11km aan net geen 10% gemiddeld was het naar boven kruipen ipv fietsen, maar de voldoening was des te groter toen we boven stonden! Hou zeker rekening met de strakke tegenwind die er kan staan (we hadden dus pech ☹).
Opgelet in de afdaling voor de vele putten en steenslag. Het wegdek is helemaal niet zo goed als hierboven beschreven.
Na 135km loodzware kilometers kwamen we moe maar voldaan aan in ons appartement in Mont Dauphin (De klim ernaar toe is op einde van de dag ook nog een zware dobber van een 2-tal km)
Today we, Robert and I climbed it. Beautiful pass, little traffic and hard work to get to the top.
It does not stop with the percentages. Very occasionally a small piece 5 A 6 percent.... And then you get the feeling you cycle down :-).
The view is indeed magnificent! So do it!

Vandaag hebben we, Robert en ik hem beklommen. Prachtige pas , weinig verkeer en hard werken om boven te komen.
Het houdt inderdaad niet op met de procentjes. Heel af en toe een klein stukje 5 A 6 procent.... en dan krijg je het gevoel dat je naar beneden fietst :-).
Het uitzicht is inderdaad magnifiek !! Doen dus!

Given the description, I was a bit apprehensive about this climb. But it is still doable. Just put your mind at rest and pedal. Was for me the finale of the holiday. 3 weeks of cycling and hiking in the Southern Alps.
The information of climbtime was very helpful. Cycled the whole top 10 and some extra climbs around Briancon.
Plus some hikes described by zero cinq.

Voor deze klim was ik gezien de beschrijving wat huiverig. Maar is toch goed te doen. Gewoon verstand op nul en trappen maar. Was voor mij het sluitstuk van de vakantie. 3 weken lekker gefietst en gewandeld in de Zuid alpen.
Veel gehad aan de informatie van klimtijd. De hele top 10 en wat extra van de beklimming rondom Briancon gefietst.
Plus nog wat wandelingen die door zero cinq worden beschreven.

This climb was pure self-flagellation. What a steep monster! Not a moment to catch my breath. The wind and cold also played a role. The marmots are laughing at you in the last part of the climb. Last km's my bike mate went clunking through the snow with the bike on his shoulder to reach the top. The view made up for a lot. Highly recommended!
Deze klim was pure zelfkastijding. Wat een stijl monster! Geen moment om op adem te komen. Ook de wind en koude speelden een rol. De marmotten lachen je toe in het laatse deel van de klim. Laatste km’s ging mijn fietsmaat klunen door de sneeuw met de fiets op de schouder om de top te kunnen bereiken. Het uitzicht maakte een hoop goed. Aanrader!
What a beast this climb is, it goes on and on (even once off the bike to catch my breath).
Oei wat een beest is deze klim het blijft maar stijgen (zelf 1x van de fiets om op adem te komen)
The nice thing is that in the summer a Buvette is opened on top - you can enjoy a Tarte de Myrtilles with delicious coffee!
Het mooie is dat er in de zomer bovenop een Buvette geopend is - kan je lekker genieten van een Tarte de Myrtilles met lekker koffie!
This summer I did the Col du Granon. What a beautiful climb and ditto view once up. But on the way it is heavy with especially in the last part no shadow at all. Flying, that is. Good to know for cycling fanatics who also have this climb on the agenda. The signs from 11 to 0 count down nicely, but there are some surprises in there. Twice there is a sign with 11 km to go. The sign for 7 km is missing, but this one is on the spot where 4 should be. So if you are really worn out and you reach the last 4 km, do not be scared off by a pole that says it is still 7 km to the top ... You are then 'almost' there!
Deze zomer de Col du Granon gedaan. Wát een mooie klim en dito uitzicht eenmaal boven. Maar onderweg is hij zwaar met vooral in het laatste gedeelte geen enkel moment van schaduw. Vliegen, dat wel. Goed om te weten wellicht voor fietsfanaten die hem ook op de planning hebben. De bordjes van 11 naar 0 tellen keurig af, maar daar zitten wat verrassingen in. Zo staat er twee keer een bord met nog 11km te gaan. Het bord van 7 kilometer mist, maar deze staat op de plek waar 4 zou moeten staan. Dus mocht je nou echt helemaal stuk zitten en je bereikt de laatste 4 kilometer, laat je niet afschrikken door een paaltje dat zegt dat het nog 7 kilometer naar de top is... Je bent er dan 'bijna'!
About ten years ago I lived in Villeneuve for a while. With some french and dutch friends we made almost daily a mountainbike-tour. From Villeneuve to Saint chaffrey, col du granon for the climb. It is a fantastic climb and the view is more beautiful than you can imagine. On top of the Granon is a parking lot with nearby remains of casemates. Underground tunnels that connect small bunkers with each other. Built for defense against the Italians. Very dark and a flashlight is required. Be careful not to get lost. In 2002 the entrance was not yet closed. Then we descended to the rear. There is only an unpaved road that descends into the valley of Nevache. On the mountain bike a fantastic descent. But for the road bike not recommended.
Een tiental jaar geleden woonde ik een periode in Villeneuve. Met een aantal franse en nederlandse vrienden maakten we bijna dagelijks een mountainbiketocht. Van Villeneuve naar Saint chaffrey, col du granon op voor de klim. Het is een fantastische klim en het uitzicht is mooier dan je je voor kunt stellen. Bovenop de Granon is een parkeerplaats met vlakbij resten van kazematten. Ondergrondse tunnels die kleine bunkerkamers met elkaar verbinden. Aangelegd ter verdediging tegen de Italianen. Erg donker en een zaklamp vereist. Pas op dat je niet verdwaalt. 2002 was de toegang nog niet afgesloten. Daarna zijn wij aan de achterkant äfgedaald. Daar ligt alleen een onverharde weg die afdaald naar de vallei van Nevache. Op de mountainbike een fantastische afdaling. Maar voor de racefiets af te raden.
