Beautiful gravel climb through the stunning scenery of the Dolomites! The condition of the road surface does not allow a climb by road bike as far as I am concerned. Spicy climb with great views. Lots of loose gravel. Zaker on the steep parts big chance of your wheel slipping. I rode on 40 mm tyres and that was already tricky, definitely not recommended with normal road bike tyres.

Superb but leaden climb. Especially on the steepest parts just before the top, the gravel is not very favourable.

Beautiful gravel climb through the stunning scenery of the Dolomites! The condition of the road surface does not allow a climb by road bike as far as I am concerned. Climbed it myself with a gravel bike and that is already difficult at times. So really only doable with gravel bike or mountain bike.

The climb itself starts out steep so that in the first kilometre your rear wheel sometimes slips. Don't let that put you off, as the middle section is quite doable: I enjoyed it with the increasingly beautiful views. The last kilometre, starting after a roadside sign with Marco Pantani on it, is then again very steep. Since you can already see the summit and walking is always an option, getting to the top eventually succeeds. As if the Pirate is still laughing at you a little bit.

Beautiful views at the top! Crowded, though, due to the many ski lifts and mountain bikes.

And I just cycled up there in the summer of 2010. Specially for the Giro beautiful new strade bianche with a big sign at every corner featuring a hero from the Giro's past. The last stretch is a good 20% and that's tricky if you fall silent. I had to clutch the fence that stands along the path to stop the cows to get going. Descending on the gravel of the strade bianche is tricky. You quickly block your wheel.

Last Saturday I did this climb. Started in Zwischenwasser (Longega in Italian) with the Furciapass. The first 8 km are doable, the last 4 are very steep. Actually, it is continuously on about 10%. Once up, the unpaved part to the Kronplatz begins. According to the lift attendant I spoke to, nothing has been done to the road since the Giro came through in 2010. To be honest, at the time of writing the road is no longer suitable for a road bike. Even with tubeless 28 mm tires it was just on the edge. Climbing standing is impossible because your wheel would slip. The climb itself is quite steep, the last kilometer is particularly steep with sections up to 20%. I don't recommend doing this on a road bike, although I did reach the top. A gravel bike or an MTB is the much better choice. Still, I'm glad I've ticked off 'm!

Since 2010 nothing has been done to the road
