Want to climb from Lavena-Ponte Tresa into the Marchirolo Valley while avoiding the busy Ponte Tresa-Varese state highway? Unless you opt for the very tough climb up Viconago, the bike/pedestrian path from Lavena is for you. Built on the route of the old ferrotranvia that connected Varese to Ponte Tresa going up the Valganna and then the Val Marchirolo, it is the classic virtuous example of recovering a disused infrastructure with lots of tunnels and bridges to make it regain value and let those who use it savor landscapes that otherwise would never be seen, at least by those who, like me, only practice road cycling. The rfirst section is the most characteristic: I premise that you really have to go looking for the'beginning of the bike/pedestrian path, but then it pays off with a path through the woods and through tunnels that makes it resemble the recovery initiatives operated in Liguria. The gradients are never important as since this is a railroad track, inclinations greater than 70/80 per thousand could not be overcome. Once you get to the junction with the state highway, the route becomes a bit more complex and promiscuous as it skirts the built-up area of Marchirolo and with the building development of the old railroad track, traces of it have gradually been lost. It's a climb that I recommend as a diversion and as a unicum in the whole province of Varese.
