From traffic-heavy Skopje, you climb the first kilometre at 9 per cent or so. Once out of the city, it flattens out and the road becomes wonderfully quiet. After the cable car start point, halfway up the climb, only then does the real hard work begin. It gets well steep and road surface quite bad at times. In the forest you climb the last 400 altitude metres. Also watch out for dogs and cows on the road. At the summit near the cross, there are several places to sit for a while and have something... read more

After the cable car start point, halfway up the climb, only then does the real hard work begin. It gets well steep and road surface quite bad at times. In the forest you climb the last 400 altitude metres. Also watch out for dogs and cows on the road. At the summit near the cross, there are several places to sit for a while and have something to eat and drink. Nice views of the city and surrounding mountains. By the way, remarkably many other cyclists.

If you are in Skopje, you cannot fail to notice the gigantic cross overlooking the city from a mountain. Whether there was a decent road that could be cycled to, I couldn't tell via GoogleMaps. But during a free afternoon (I was there on work business) I ventured there anyway, with a somewhat bulky but decent city bike provided by the hotel. And I did not regret it. The first part of the climb is gradually uphill, on excellent tarmac and through a number of hairpin bends that give you an increasingly beautiful view of Skopje the higher you go. Although the cross is a popular destination for day-trippers, it was quiet cycling all in all. In fact, the second part of the climb is completely car-free. From the last car park (after which you have to climb a few steps to get past the barrier), the road narrows and the percentages get steeper. You ride delightfully through greenery, which means that for the next view of Skopje, you have to wait until you reach the very top, i.e. at that cross. The tranquillity of the bike ride contrasts somewhat with the liveliness at the top (mostly hikers and downhillers, who have come up by cable lift), but that doesn't make it any less worthwhile.
