the climb on the Solenzara side is difficult because before the final ascent and percentages often close to 10% or even more, you have to climb the Col de Larone which is short and steep and above all very hot in places.
Personally, I really like the climb via Zonza, which is shorter and fairly rolling, but whose scenery and views of the needles are spectacular and sublime.
To sum up, a mythical climb via Solenzara and a more aesthetic climb via Zonza....you need to be in good shape in both cases.
Starts out easy, so you get moving. Then it switches to moderate, still feeling good. The last third is really tough, you're crying now! Double digits the last 8k. Nice descent. Overall good pavement. Three restaurants at the top. Bring a jacket, it was very cold at the top the mid May day I rode. A must ride if you're on Corsica.
I climbed at the end of April in the mist. Very little traffic, it was very quiet, just the mountain and me. I liked the two different parts of the climb. The first offers more diversity of scenery and becomes progressively more difficult. The second is wooded and more constant, but also more difficult. The last four kilometers were the hardest for me, with fatigue making itself felt and the percentage at around 8% all the time. But if you manage your effort, it's largely doable. A very good experience.
The pass really kicks off at the foot of the Col de Larone (before that, it's all short climbs and descents). Don't underestimate this first difficulty: it's still 5 kilometres at over 8%. After a short descent, back to the coal, this time to reach the Col de Bavella. Here, you'll have 8km at over 8% also. It's a really difficult pass, where it can get very hot, but the scenery all the way up and at the top is well worth the effort
Much has already been said about this climb in the other reviews. The reason the road is relatively busy is that there is busy canyoning and swimming in the Solenzara River. The 'pick-up points' for these activities are all in the section between roughly 10 and 20 km from the start. (Swimming I can heartily recommend, is really great and refreshing to lie in the river and take in the beautiful surroundings. Had done it the day before the bike ride). I left at 8.15am from Solenzara on a day in late July and the crowds were not too bad. The climb a bit less so. In particular, I find the irregularity difficult. And in the kilometres classified as 8 and 9 per cent there are many stretches of hundreds of metres or longer that are 10-2 per cent on my Bryton. Then I crawl more than I climb. Anyway, rode it up without stopping so that still made me proud. Still the toughest climb in Corsica, just slightly more climbing points than the Tourmalet even, and my provisional topper in terms of climbing points (will hopefully be superseded by the Mont Ventoux next week). At the summit is also a kind of altar rock with all the memorial signs of believers. I didn't see a picture of that yet, so I added it. And one of my bike, of course :-).
The Col de Bavella from Solenzara is a difficult climb because after a very long false flat on which you have to be careful not to get carried away, there's the first Col de Larone, which is fairly short but steep and very hot for the first half. Once again, try not to give too much away, because after a short descent, you attack the last part of the Col de Bavella, which is fortunately shaded, but the gradients in the second part are still above 10% on average, so remember to eat after Larone. The panorama at the summit is a reward, especially if the weather is clear.
Very nice climb, started early at 8.15 in late May, not much traffic on the way up but quite busy at the top and more cars and motorbikes were ascending as I descended. Early start recommended. Amazing surroundings, road surface very good in some sections, with some uneven parts. Three cafes at the summit.
Pass in 2 parts, with the 1st part fairly easy, but the 2nd part is very hard! And with the heat on top of it, it's a real ordeal!
A real alpine giant in Corsica. As everywhere in Corsica, you have to set off early. it can get unprecedentedly hot on the bike. It all starts quietly, but further towards the summit it gets harder and steeper. on top, the hiking tourists look at you strangely. They start the hikes at the top, while you arrive there stik broken.
Great climbs, did it from propriano to the other coast to solazano. Intens climbs, especially on the way back from solazano. The length of tge course, the temperature (July),the sun and the steepness of some parts makes it a coarse you need to be trained to finish. Beatiful scenery, good asphalt. Only the last part of the descent after Sainte Lucie de Tallano had a lot of road construction going on and because of that a dangerous surface. Be careful and slowdown especially when you sre tired.
This is a seriously tough climb. Few moments to recuperate. High gradients. Beautiful surroundings, quiet road in the morning. The Arone was actually quite disappointing for me, it already demolished me more than expected. And then you have the very heavy Bavella... It is important to divide your strength well in order to have enough for the Bavella. All in all, a must if you are in this corner of Corsica!
Dit is een serieus zware klim. Weinig momenten om te recupereren. Hoge stijgingspercentages.
A must do from May to mid October. The ascent of the Col de Bavella itself, that is to say the second one, is magical.
Beautiful forest and wonderful mineral landscape.
