Long climb in a valley leading to the famous matterhorn view from the 'other' (maybe interesting less touristic) side. Last part is steep. The surroundings are awesome.

If it wasn't for the final view I would have given it a 2-star rating. I may have been unlucky but there was a lot of traffic during the week with big trucks. Quite a lot of illuminated tunnels but not beautiful ones and above all the road was in very bad condition even though it was being resurfaced. Even at the points without construction sites (7 I counted) I found the road dirty with small insidious pebbles. The climb itself is well worth the effort, particularly in the first 8km and the last 15 or so. Breathtaking views to repay the hard work

Were it not for the fact that one reaches the slopes of the Matterhorn, the ascent from Chatillon to Cervinia is not exactly a delicacy for the palates of the most hardened climbers. Wide road, exposed to sun and wind, crazy traffic with the aggravating factor that the climb begins just under 2 km from the Chatillon-Saint Vincent motorway exit.
From Chatillon to Antey-Saint-Andrè is of medium difficulty. From Antey you can climb to Torgnon and the Col de Panthaleon (this is a pleasant, traffic-free climb, especially if approached from Chambave). A little falsopiano up to Buisson (cable car to Chamois) and then a first stretch between 8 and 10% up to the foot of Valtournanche (Laghetto di Maen). Then you really start to suffer with the stretch through Valtournanche and beyond to the first tunnel. Then it alternates between moments of suffering and others that are much less demanding up to the pass before Cervinia at Lac Bleu. Just past the last up and down, the entire Cervinia basin (with its hideous semi-modern buildings) opens up before your eyes, dominated by the unmistakable profile of the Matterhorn (if you are lucky enough to see it). The road surface is really bad in places, with cracks and fissures caused by the amount of traffic in several places, requiring attention both uphill and downhill. Personally, I found the crossing of Valtournanche extremely tiring from this point of view since you are often forced to ride your bike towards the centre of the road because of potholes, cracks and fissures.

Really long climb but not very steep. During the summer ski season on the glacier there is a lot of trafic but mostly respectful to the cyclists.
Great climb and beautiful nature.

Not too busy road, with some tunnels and not very scenic.
Very nice for training, full of hairpin bends and with varied but not extreme gradients.

Beautiful climb in a 'side street' of the Aosta Valley. This climb takes you to the Swiss-Italian border with a beautiful view of the Matterhorn.
The first 8 kilometres of the climb up to the village you have to go through. The road is quite wide here and the cars go very fast. There is not much to see either. After the village, the climb flattens out a bit and becomes more beautiful with every kilometre. It is also more difficult, because at 27 km, this is not a short climb. The further you get on the climb, the quieter it gets. The best part comes after the last long tunnel about five kilometres from the end. From here, you are treated to a magnificent view of the ridge, the Matterhorn and the glacier.
The end of the climb is in the extremely ugly ski village of Breuil-Cervina. However, there are numerous restaurants and a water point here.
I did this climb on a Sunday in September and did not need a jacket or arm pieces on the way back. Nevertheless, the climb goes up to well over 2000 metres. Perhaps it stays quite warm because it is not a mountain pass and the village is in the bowl of the mountain.
