Beautiful and varied side from the Sewen Valley, with a beautiful stretch along the lake and punchier stretches up to 9-10％ in the forest. Less constant than the other side, but more interesting just because of that. Above, the landscape opens up with a chance of wind.

Very nice and sheltered climb. Keep a little left for when you come out of the forest at the top of the climb, as the headwind on the spur can still be vicious.
Zeer mooie en beschutte klim. Hou nog een beetje over voor wanneer je bovenaan de klim uit het bos komt, want de tegenwind op de uitloper kan nog wel eens venijnig zijn.

The hairpin bends at the start of the climb before Lake Alfeld are sublime. Thereafter, the road evolves on the mountainside, unfortunately no hairpins thereafter, this part may seem long for some, the gradient remaining between 8 and 9％. It eases off as you reach the Langenberg ... you've done the hard part, there's still 4km to the summit.
After that, there's a mixture of flats/descents and climbs with a natural clearing 1km from the summit, giving a panoramic view of the valley from where you've arrived.
In autumn on a sunny day, it's magnificent (as it is everywhere in the Vosges at this time of year).

Ridden up my very first real col on a regular city bike. Needless to say, it was extremely tough and there seemed to be no end to those steep sections in the woods. I stopped a couple of times to catch my breath, but I finished the ride.

This climb is relatively quiet. The first part of the climb is on a very wide road, before branching off onto an even wider road just before the summit. However, in the first, rather wooded section, you have to deal with the occasional violent percentage, but these efforts are brief.

Mooie klim met een prachtig stukje bij het meer. Vergeet bij de haarspeldbochten niet om je heen te kijken en van de omgeving te genieten. Was overigens verrassend rustig op de weg.
The first 'real' climb of my life. I was a bit afraid of it but I found it surprisingly easy, although that does not mean it was easy at all. Before the part with the hairpins it suddenly went from barely false flat to steep and I had to go straight to my 30x25. That will never work out, I thought, but the hairpins themselves were not too bad. Also the higher percentages in the forest went relatively well, but the last 2 km in the forest I had a hard time. The thought that it would get easier and the summit was not so far away made me keep going. At and around the top you have a wide view and you can also see where you come from! Recommended!
De eerste 'echte' klim van mijn leven. Ik was er wat bang voor maar ik vond hem nog verrassend goed meevallen, al betekent dat helemaal niet dat het ook makkelijk wás. Vóór het deel met de haarspeldbochten gaat het ineens van amper vals plat over naar hellend en moest ik direct naar mijn 30x25. Dat komt nooit goed dacht ik, maar de haarspeldbochten zelf vielen wel heel goed mee. Ook de zwaardere percentages in het bos gingen relatief goed, maar de laatste 2 km in het bos kreeg ik het wel moeilijk. De gedachte dat het wel makkelijker ging worden en de top niet zo ver meer was deden me wel doorgaan. Op en rond de top heb je een weids uitzicht en zie je ook van waar je komt! Aanrader!
Very nice climb, a large part in a wooded area. Shortly after the start, there are some nice views of the Sewen valley and its lake. Beautiful scenery but no time to stop in the middle of the effort. The last two km are easy when you join the other road to the top of the Ballon d'Alsace pass.
Très belle montée, une grande partie dans une partie boisée. Peu après le départ, il y a quelques jolis point de vue sur la vallée de Sewen et son lac. Beaux paysages mais pas vraiment le temps de s'arrêter en plein effort. Les deux derniers kms sont faciles lorsque l'on rejoint l'autre départementale vers le sommet du col du Ballon d'Alsace.
I have done the three sides of the Ballon d'Alsace in one day. Good to do, because the Ballon d'Alsace is as we say 'a runner'. Good to drive up with not too heavy an incline.

Ik heb de drie kanten van de Ballon d'Alsace eens op één dag gedaan. Goed te doen, want de Ballon d'Alsace is zoals we zeggen 'een lopertje'. Goed omhoog te rijden met geen al te zware stijgingspercentage.
Dit is zeker geen lelijke kant, maar niet de allermooiste, dit is zonder twijfel wel de zwaarste kant van de drie. Toch blijft deze kant ook goed te doen.
I have ridden this Ballon twice now: from Saint-Maurice and from Sewen. I certainly prefer the latter. Nothing bad about the first one, but this one is much more boring. The climb from Sewen is more varied and that makes it more attractive. The part with the short bends at the lake is the best part. Where the climb meets the variant from Giromagny, there is a short stretch without shelter. Here the wind has free play so keep some reserves for this last part!
Ik heb deze Ballon nu al tweemaal opgereden: vanuit Saint-Maurice en vanuit Sewen. De laatste geniet met zekerheid mijn voorkeur! Niets slechts over de eerste, maar deze is gewoon een pak saaier. In de klim vanuit Sewen zit meer afwisseling en dat maakt hem ook aantrekkelijker. Het stukje met de korte bochten aan het meer is het leukste deel. Waar de beklimming samen komt met de variant vanuit Giromagny, is er nog een kort stuk zonder beschutting af te leggen. Hier heeft de wind vrij spel dus bewaar zeker wat reserve voor dit laatste stuk!
Nice climb, no crazy gradient and good forgiving. Lots of work in the woods though which means you have to stop occasionally. Good asphalt, route of the tour 2019.

What a beautiful climb, you start at a beautiful lake and after a few kilometers there is another one, then the real climbing starts! But the nice thing about this climb is that it always forgives you after a steep part with a piece flat or even a short descent. Too bad about the traffic, even in a weekend off season there are many cars and motorcycles, although you can not compare with the Schlucht or the Grand Ballon! Tip, keep some space for the last 3 km, with good legs this is a very nice piece to pass.
Wat een mooie klim, je begint aan een prachtig meer en na een paar kilometer is er terug zo 1, daarna begint het echte klimwerk! Maar het leuke aan deze klim is dat hij je na een steil stuk altijd vergeeft met een stukje vlak of zelfs een korte afdaling. Wel spijtig van het verkeer, zelfs in een weekend buiten het seizoen zijn er veel auto's en motoren, al kan je het niet vergelijken met de Schlucht of de Grand Ballon! Tip, hou wat over voor de laatste 3 kilometer, met goeie benen is dit een heel leuk stuk om wat door te jassen.
To start with: the ride takes 13 km unless my bike computer thoroughly measures wrong. Compared to the Grand Ballon, the slope percentages are less homogeneous. There are some quite steep parts, and not where Climbbybike indicates. The road surface is perfect, the variety is great. Km-stèles indicate the progress (distance-altitude level) but no signs like on the Grand Ballon. Bare landscape above where the wind can blow: makes me call this climb 'mini-Ventoux'. At my advanced age (almost 70) I managed to reach 10.7km/h on a touring bike without going too deep: indicates that this is a piece of cake for the real thing.

Er zitten behoorlijk steile stukken bij, en niet waar bvb Climbbybike het aangeeft. Het wegdek is perfect, de afwisseling groot. Km-stèles geven de vordering aan (afstand-hoogtepeil) maar geen borden zoals bij de Grand Ballon. Kaal landschap boven waar de wind te keer kan gaan: doet me deze klim 'mini-Ventoux' heten. Op m'n gevorderde leeftijd (bijna 70) met een toerfiets 10.7km/u gehaald zonder diep te gaan: geeft aan dat dit voor de échten een makkie is.
