A wonderful climb, much underestimated because the slopes of Bormio and Prato are more famous. It starts off immediately strong with percentages always above 8 and you can practically never catch your breath until the summit, apart from a small central section where the percentages drop a little. The landscape is majestic...few cars and motorbikes...in August a few cyclists on the descent from the Stelvio, but only a few on the ascent.

It’s a great but hard climb. Views are stunning and it gives a nice sense of accomplishment knowing that there are almost no higher paved roads in Switzerland for you to climb. The road is narrow at times and this can cause some difficulties if there are cars coming from both ways. Traffic is moderate. If you climbed it you should take advantage of the effort and continue the last couple of kilometers in Italy until the Stelvio. The top is almost completely empty but in the Stelvio you can find a lot of people, shops and food options.

Well... the road is very beautiful, including the road surface. A really good variant to reach the Stelvio. I recommend the combination with the Forno because the beauty of the road is really worth it.

Another fascinating slope to the Stelvio Pass!

Beautiful, steep, tough, everything passes in this climb. I rode it after I crossed the Stelvio from Bormio and returned via Switzerland. No energy left to do the last 4 to the top of the Stelvio again.

A climb to be proud of. The first few kilometres are quite tough and you are glad when you're confronted with lesser percentages after about 5 kilometres. That little bit of rest is a nice bonus. The last 7 km, partly due to the wind that blew against me, I have experienced as very heavy. The surroundings where you cycle are of an unprecedented beauty. In my opinion a must if you are in the neighborhood.

To climb up the steep cross-border Umbrail pass from the Swiss town of St. Maria, 36 unnumbered hairpin bends, spread out over the climbing route, are shoved under your wheels. The narrow road initially climbs between the forests and from the Gasthaus Alpenrösli (the only inhabited building on the way - 1728m) it continues into the unspoilt mountain nature of the Muraunza valley. There is hardly any traffic so that the lonely silence is interrupted sporadically by the whistling of marmots and your deepening breathing as you climb steeply.
In the early morning the rising sun and the haze veils made this all really mythical. The summit with only Swiss-Italian border post is preceded by a mountain guesthouse, after which a slight descent takes you to the Stelvi route from Bormio, where you can continue to climb like me on the steepest final stretch to the famous pass height.
At my first Umbrail climb in 2011 3 km. in the middle part was still gravel but here was a "asphalt sleeve" adapted thanks to the Giro passages.

Beautiful but tough climb in pristine nature.
Good alternative for those who want to cycle lonely, quiet and without too much traffic on the Stelvio.

Prachtige doch zware klim in ongerepte natuur.

Nice climb, clearly less traffic than the side of Prato. Also nice to do from Prato. My experience is that follow cars can be checked at the border.

Very nice climb, but heavy cost. Ridden during a tour from Livigno, you can go all the way to the top of the Stelvio. Then the descent to Bormio and back to Livigno. Is a beautiful day on the bike!

Umbrail pass "third" side of the Stelvio although the pass formally ends at the Swiss border. Then it's only 4km to the top, with an average 9%% incline not the easiest of kilometres.
Notorious for the poop incident with Tom, not unknown to the real climbers.
With over 9% average not the easiest side and only since 2015 completely asphalted.

From Santa Maria you go straight up firmly, the given percentages are real and there is no resting moment.
The road runs through the forest and with nice bends on the way you have regularly a different view.
After 4 kilometers you are already 400 meters higher and you arrive at Hotel Alpenrose, a last chance to score some provisions or have a drink.
It continues to rise enormously and the trees slowly give way and the plain opens up before you. The stream gives a peaceful feeling but the legs scream for rest.
We relax a bit when we cross the river but the next hell to climb is already there.
The sun shines on your head and legs and the asphalt what you see pulls you down.
A few more curves stuck to the steep wall and the border comes in sight.
If you look straight ahead you see the gipfelhaus on the top of the Stelvio, you are not there yet, but if you have been there before, the Bratwurst association really floats in your nose.

There is no border control and you can just drive through, do not forget the picture at the sign of the Umbrailpass because here is the end.
At the junction you can descend to Bormio or climb to the top.

For many, a start in Prato and descend via the Umbrail and then back via Glurns, a round trip of 65 kilometers with a fantastic descent.
