The Jaufenpass, (Passo di Monte Giovo in Italian), is the most northern Alpine pass in Italy. the scenery and buildings look Austrian, the local language is German, and so it's easy to forget you are in Italy. Pretty even gradient, occasional views, a bit bleak at the summit. Here's a video of my climb, https://youtu.be/6ug25wZat1o?si=d6dBI4LkWmtFurBL
Not the most spectacularly beautiful pass, but at 2094m, the views at the top are terrific. We had the summit to ourselves at night in the campervan, but it's proximity to the Brenner pass brought swarms of motos up the mountain in the daytime.
A couple of these German bikers borrowed my bike foot pump. I thought they were being a bit vigorous with it, but only discovered later that their exertion had melted the valve. So guys, if you are reading this....
To avoid the extreme heat (33°C in Vipiteno/Sterzing) I cycled up the Jaufenpas/Passo Giovo in the early morning.
Beautiful climb that felt even, without extremes and abrupt transitions in gradient. Most of the climb winds through pine forests, occasionally interrupted by a beautiful panorama. Only the last 2 km one suddenly leaves the green shelter to cycle through the last hairpins between the open rocky plain to the visible summit between two mountain ridges.
There is only tourist traffic. Refuelling is possible at the top and on the way in the village of Kalch.
The kilometre markers count down to the pass height (summit is KM 40).
A challenging climb, also known as the penultimate climb of the Ötztaler Radmarathon.
Quite an unpleasant climb, in the sense of pushing for a very long time in a percentage that is just not right for a smooth rhythm. But you have to get over it, because there are no easier climbs on the same ridge. The last three kilometers are a party, I was one of the people who had some energy left, so you can accelerate quite a bit and pick up other cyclists there.
