Cycled this beautiful climb to the Teleccio reservoir, in the middle of the Gran Paradiso National Park, September 2025 when I stayed in Locana the classic base for the Nivolet.
Run-up from Locana to start in Rosone is a brief warm-up on the Nivolet route, to immediately climb up the side valley formed by the Piantonetto mountain river after turning right on it firmly with double digits. Followed by a short relative "plateau" with a few small villages consisting of a few houses and the occasional church.
The habitation stops and the last part of the route in rough desolate mountain scenery is murderous. Last 5 km. at 12.3% average says it all!
Hairpin bends wind through huge rock massifs There are numerous waterfalls thundering down beside the road. The dam can be spotted from far above you but it is endlessly delayed by the steepness. Just before the very steep end (16%), there is another short rock tunnel and the final hairpin turn leaning against the dam.
End point could hardly be more beautiful for me. Magnificent lake
surrounded by snow-capped mountain peaks on a sun-drenched day.
Practical
-no tourism so no catering facilities either, only water sources
en route.
-no traffic, as cyclists ignore barriers and private road
signs.
-last part regularly bad road surface: short stretches of gravel,
stones on the road, lots of potholes, rough concrete, cobbles, and the in
other reviews cited bicycle wheel unfriendly transverse
grids.
You know what's coming your way on the descent!
Conclusion:
The PERFECT CLIMBER if you kick like me for solitude, pure nature and challenge!!!
If you only cycle the Nivolet in the Orco valley, this is
a missed opportunity!
borden.
-laatste deel regelmatig slecht wegdek: korte stukken gravel,
andere reviews aangehaalde fietswiel onvriendelijke dwarse
roosters.

Very tough climb! My garmin was often at 14%. Not a nice road with very wide grids to take at an angle to avoid the wheel getting stuck. Descent done very slowly with saddle down because I felt much safer. Very nice panorama. I would call it the poor man's Mortirolo because of the similarity of the gradients and length. At San Lorenzo it flattens out a bit. Little frequented by cars. Done on a Sunday. Half of the route is private but you can go by bike. The last 4 km are closed off by a bar so you can only pass on foot or by bike.
Salita molto dura!
Good ride but very difficult. Very little traffic, or any other people in general. However very rough road conditions! Completely destroyed my rear tyre!
Rough climb, road and valley, first 4 km with some hard sections but balanced out by flats, the last 7 km are tough.
The asphalt is very degraded, with eight sections where the road has been repaired after landslides, then asphalt that has disappeared.
There are eight drainage grates to watch out for, they cross the road and are made of iron rods into which a 25 tyre comfortably fits.
With a road bike, to be avoided on days when the weather is uncertain, the road sees the constant presence of stones and slab, with water I think it's a mess.
From the start, it goes straight up steeply on not too good road surface. After this first section of hairpins, you cycle through some hamlets with several water fountains and it is less steep for a while. Then you come to the sign that the road is closed but I still encountered several cars and there were also some at the top of the lake. From now on it is back up steeply to the summit. Meanwhile, the road surface deteriorates again and at some drainage grids, even uphill, you have to be careful. Most are no problem with 28mm tyres but there are 3 or 4 that are really dangerous (see photo). If you have ridden this climb uphill then you know not to try to make up time on the descent. Rather brake too much once, I took half an hour on the descent and didn't experience any problems anywhere.
I fully concur with febax's previous experience. If you like a tough challenge through a fantastic, desolate landscape, you should definitely do this climb. Unfortunately, the drainage grids are a real danger to me :(
Very nice view at the top. Good road surface (except for the last 300m in cobblestones) but you have to be very careful of the many grates along the road, to be taken crosswise.
Vista molto bella in cima.
