Rough climb, road and valley, first 4 km with some hard sections but balanced out by flats, the last 7 km are tough.
The asphalt is very degraded, with eight sections where the road has been repaired after landslides, then asphalt that has disappeared.
There are eight drainage grates to watch out for, they cross the road and are made of iron rods into which a 25 tyre comfortably fits.
With a road bike, to be avoided on days when the weather is uncertain, the road sees the constant presence of stones and slab, with water I think it's a mess.
From the start, it goes straight up steeply on not too good road surface. After this first section of hairpins, you cycle through some hamlets with several water fountains and it is less steep for a while. Then you come to the sign that the road is closed but I still encountered several cars and there were also some at the top of the lake. From now on it is back up steeply to the summit. Meanwhile, the road surface deteriorates again and at some drainage grids, even uphill, you have to be careful. Most are no problem with 28mm tyres but there are 3 or 4 that are really dangerous (see photo). If you have ridden this climb uphill then you know not to try to make up time on the descent. Rather brake too much once, I took half an hour on the descent and didn't experience any problems anywhere.
I fully concur with febax's previous experience. If you like a tough challenge through a fantastic, desolate landscape, you should definitely do this climb. Unfortunately, the drainage grids are a real danger to me :(
Very nice view at the top. Good road surface (except for the last 300m in cobblestones) but you have to be very careful of the many grates along the road, to be taken crosswise.
Vista molto bella in cima.
