A mythical climb that every rider must do once in his life. This 1,4km climb is steep and burns your legs. The downside is especially the beginning of the climb where the road is narrow and therefore dangerous with car traffic.
Un ascension mythique que tout coureur doit faire une fois dans sa vie. Cette ascension de 1,4km est raide et vous brûle les jambes. Le bémol est surtout le début de la côte où la route est étroite donc dangereuse avec la circulation des voitures.

Saint Nicolas owes its fame to rue Bordelais, the final of Liège-Bastogne-Liège, known as côte Saint Nicolas. The heroic battles on this street of about 1400 meters, with a maximum gradient of 13％, are remembered by many.
From the junction of five roads, you have to start the climb on the left side of the corner house on a, for Liege standards, very acceptable road surface. What men like Vandenbroucke, Boogerd or Rebellin never considered is to go right into the air. There lies the devoid cousin of the Bordelais, straight ahead and thus much shorter, but with a percentage the Bordelais cannot match: the rue du Coq. To make cycling a real adventure, the Coq has been built as a staircase for a large part, with on the left a cobblestone gutter, where in theory one can cycle. Because of the lush weeds in the joints and the insane steepness, this is an almost impossible task. Then the Bordelais anyway. On an early Sunday morning a mostly quiet heiging.

Saint Nicolas dankt haar bekendheid aan de rue Bordelais, de finale van Luik-Bastenaken-Luik, gekend als côte Saint Nicolas. De heroïsche gevechten op deze straat van zo’n 1400 meter, met een maximale stijging van 13％, staan bij velen op het netvlies.
Vanaf de vijfsprong moet je aan de linkerkant van het hoekhuis de klim aanvatten over een, voor Luikse begrippen, zeer acceptabel wegdek. Wat mannen als Vandenbroucke, Boogerd of Rebellin nooit hebben overwogen is rechtsom de lucht in te gaan. Daar ligt de verstoken neef van de Bordelais, rechtdoor en dus veel korter, maar met een percentage waar de Bordelais niet aan kan tippen: de rue du Coq. Om het fietsen helemaal tot avontuur te verheffen is le Coq over een groot deel als trap gebouwd, met links ervan een kasseien goot, waar in theorie gefietst kan worden. Vanwege het weelderige onkruid in de voegen en de krankzinnige steilte, is dit een vrijwel onmogelijke opgave. Dan toch maar de Bordelais. Op een vroege zondagochtend een meestal rustige heiging.
A celebrity among connoisseurs. For years the last of Liège-Bastogne-Liège (if we don't count the kasque in Ans, of course). We all know the images: Gilbert, VDB, Valverde ... Their attack on the Saint Nicolas is burned on our retinas. But if there is one slope in LBL that I would not do on my trip, it is this one. Especially for the traffic. Cycling in the city is not your cup of tea. But apart from that, it is a great climb. Especially one to continue on, if you can.
Een beroemdheid onder de kenners. Jarenlang de laatste van Luik-Bastenaken-Luik (als we dat kaske in Ans niet meetellen, natuurlijk). We kennen de beelden allemaal: Gilbert, VDB, Valverde ... Hun aanval op de Saint Nicolas staat op ons netvlies gebrand. Maar als er nu één helling uit LBL is die ik niet zou doen op mijn tocht, is het deze wel. Vooral voor het verkeer. Fietsen in de stad is niet jedat. Maar voorts een prima klim. Vooral eentje om eens op door te gaan, als je kan.

It is a nice climb. I like the 10％ km, but in an ugly neighbourhood.
Now I was in the neighbourhood, so I checked it out again.
Ik vind dit wel een leuke klim.
Maar je komt er niet vaak meer, omdat hij al enkele jaren niet meer in de finale van Luik-Bastenaken-Luik zit.
Leuke col. Ik hou wel van die kilometer aan 10％, maar wel in een lelijke buurt.
Nu was ik in de buurt, dus nog maar eens geattackeerd.
