So, yes, many will say that the Lautaret is not the "real" Galibier! I can't dispute that, as it's the only side I've climbed.
On the other side, I climbed the Télégraphe in the middle of winter, but the Galibier was obviously closed.
In any case, as bored as I sometimes was climbing the Lautaret, I found the 8 km of the Galibier to be sumptuous. And up there, it's just splendid.
Alors, oui, peut-être que par le Lautaret, beaucoup diront que ce n’est pas le « vrai » Galibier ! Je ne peux pas contester, étant donné que c’est le seul versant que j’ai fait.
De l’autre côté, j’ai gravi le Télégraphe en plein hiver mais le Galibier était évidemment fermé.
En tout cas, autant je m’étais un peu parfois ennuyé en montant le Lautaret, autant ces 8 km du Galibier, je les ai trouvés somptueux. Et là haut, c’est juste splendide.
The road quality is good. Above the tunnel, the road is sometimes a bit narrow.
Unfortunately, there are only three days a year when this pass belongs only to cyclists, at least for three hours.
What I saw today were two small tuned road racers racing each other up the south ramp, and quite a few off-road (or at least looking like off-road) vehicles (Defender, Rubicon, Unimog, Jeep, Mercedes G, etc.), sometimes packed as if for a Himalayan expedition.
Die Straßenqualität ist gut. Oberhalb des Tunnels ist die Straße tlw. etwas eng.
Leider gibt es nur drei Tage im Jahr, an denen dieser Pass zumindest für drei Stunden nur den Radfahrern gehört.
Was ich heute gesehen habe, waren zwei kleine getunte Straßenflitzer, die sich auf der Südrampe bergauf ein Rennen geliefert haben, und ziemlich viele geländetaugliche (oder zumindest so aussehende) Fahrzeuge (Defender, Rubicon, Unimog, Jeep, Mercedes G, etc.), tlw. wie für eine Himalajaexpedition bepackt.
Very nice climb! More than compensates for the busy road between Le Bourg-d'Oisans and the Col du Lautaret (one of the 3 roads to get to this summit). The views are fantastic. In mid-July it is completely snow-free and mainly dry and stony, but that makes you extra aware that you are very high in the mountains. After all, the Galibier is the 4th highest mountain pass in Europe.
Heel mooie klim! Compenseert ruimschoots voor de drukke weg tussen Le Bourg-d'Oisans en de Col du Lautaret (één van de 3 wegen om deze top op te komen). De uitzichten zijn fantastisch. Half juli is het er geheel sneeuwvrij en vooral dor en stenig, maar dat maakt je extra bewust van dat je heel erg hoog in de bergen zit. De Galibier is tenslotte de 4-na-hoogste bergpas in Europa.
Done this climb in 2020. With 3 cycling buddies, we left from the parking lot of Le Lac Du Chambon at the foot of the climb to Les Deux Alpes. Although I was sick that day, this was a beautiful ride to ride with very nice views, really a treat for the eye. Arriving at the top of the Col de Lautaret, I had to turn right and saw that I wasn't there yet. It was similar to arriving at Chalet Renard when climbing Mont Ventoux. The hardest part was coming up and the landscape was almost bare from here on. The last few dozen metres were hell at 12％, tired and sick. But I made it to the top. And then it was time to enjoy the beautiful views. If there was one drawback to this climb, it was the bikers who sometimes whizzed by,
Deze klim gedaan in 2020. Met 3 fietsmakkers vertrokken vanop de parking van Le Lac Du Chambon aan de voet van de klim naar Les Deux Alpes. Alhoewel ik die dag ziek was, was dit een prachtige rit om te rijden met zeer mooie zichten, echt een streling voor het oog. Aangekomen op de top van de Col de Lautaret, moest ik rechts afdraaien en zag dat ik er nog niet was. Het was vergelijkbaar met aankomen aan Chalet Renard bij de beklimming van de Mont Ventoux. Het zwaarste stuk kwam eraan en het landschap was vanaf hier vrijwel kaal. De laatste tientallen meters waren echter een hel bij 12％, moe en ziek. Maar ik haalde de top. En dan was het toch genieten van de mooie zichten. Als er aan deze klim één minpuntje was, dan waren het de motards die soms rakelings voorbij zoefden,
The contrast with the Lautaret could not be greater - this is a beautiful climb in all respects. The scenery is beautiful, narrow road winding upwards, a tough final shot and a summit where you imagine yourself on the roof of the world.

Het contrast met de Lautaret kan niet groter zijn - dit is een prachtige klim in alle opzichten. Omgeving is schitterend, smalle weg die naar boven kronkelt, een pittig eindschot en een top waar je je even op het dak van de wereld waant.
Doet heel Zwitsers aan vind ik.

This is my favorite side of the pass, for its even more sumptuous landscapes than on the north side (what a great view on the Ecrins!). Climbed for the first time in 1997 during the BRA (Brevet de Randonneur des Alpes), from Bourg-d'Oisans, and several times from Briançon afterwards. In both cases, the ascent is very long, and it is absolutely necessary to "keep the pedal to the metal" in view of the final part, and particularly the last kilometre.
C'est mon versant préféré du col, pour ses paysages encore plus somptueux que sur le versant nord (quelle vue grandiose sur les Écrins !). Grimpé pour la première fois en 1997 lors du BRA (Brevet de Randonneur des Alpes), à partir de Bourg-d'Oisans, et plusieurs fois à partir de Briançon par la suite. Dans les deux cas, l'ascension est très longue, et il faut absolument « en garder sous la pédale » en vue de la partie finale, et particulièrement le dernier kilomètre.
Galibier is one of the three iconic Tour climbs that start in Briançon.
The 27 km. long prelude on the wide and busy road until the real start of the climb on Col du Lautaret is not so pleasant but the final part, the 9 km. long tough climb to the Galibier, more than compensates.
The entire climb is above the tree line so you get unobstructed fantastic views before your eyes that are constantly changing by the hairpin bends. Views of your starting point at the Lautaret, the snowy glaciers and peaks of the Ecrins National Park and the valley where your approach route from Briançon ran through. The last kilometre, after turning right before the tunnel, is very hard at 11％ up to the pass height which is 360° of natural beauty.
There is no provisioning at the summit and bicycle poles are there again every kilometre.

Het 27 km. lange voorspel op de brede drukke vrij rechte weg tot de echte start van de beklimming op Col du Lautaret is niet zo aangenaam maar het uiteindelijke slotgedeelte,de 9 km. lange pittige klim naar de Galibier,compenseert dit ruimschoots.
De volledige klim loopt boven de boomgrens waardoor je ongehinderd fantastische vergezichten voor de ogen krijgt die dan nog voortdurend veranderen door de haarspeldbochten. Zicht op je steeds dieper zakkende startpunt aan de Lautaret, op de besneeuwde gletsjers en pieken van het Nationaal Park des Ecrins en de vallei waar je aanlooproute vanuit Briançon doorliep. De laatste kilometer, na het rechts afslaan voor de tunnel, is loodzwaar aan 11％ tot de pashoogte die 360° natuurpracht is.
Geen bevoorrading op de top en fietsinfopaaltjes zijn er weer elke kilometer.
Natuurlijke top klim van fietshistorisch Tour belang wat je kan afleiden uit de verfsporen op het asfalt, maar de uitzichten gingen bij mij met alle aandacht lopen. WONDERMOOI!!!!!
As far as I'm concerned, one of the most beautiful. You can see very far. On one side you see the top of the col, on the other side the immense La Meije massif. If you look to the side, you see the Lautaret meandering in the valley of Briancon. Really a high mountain col, you imagine yourself almost a mountain marmot.
Wat mij betreft een van de allermooiste. Je kunt ontzettend ver kijken. Aan de ene kant zie je de top van de col, aan de andere kant het immense La Meije massief. Als je opzij kijkt zie je de Lautaret het dal van Briancon in meanderen. Echt een hooggebergte col, je waant jezelf haast een bergmarmot.
Started from the camping in La Grave and so the approach over the last piece Lautaret. Easy to do.
From reaching the Col de Lautaret, it's a lot nicer to cycle, because a lot of traffic parks here or goes on to Briancon. The traffic that does want to go to the Galibier usually adapts well to the cycling tourist.
A beautiful winding path with the sting in the tail: a steep final kilometer, but rewarded with a beautiful view of the valley towards Valloire and in the far background the view of Mont Blanc. Cool!
Vertrokken vanaf de camping in La Grave en dus de aanloop over het laatste stukje Lautaret. Prima te doen.
Vanaf het bereiken van de Col de Lautaret fietst het een stuk fijner, daar veel verkeer hier parkeert ofwel doorrijdt richting Briancon. Het verkeer dat wel naar de Galibier wil past zich doorgaans prima aan aan de fietsende toerist.
Een mooi slingerend pad met het venijn in de staart: een steile slotkilometer, maar met als beloning een prachtig uitzicht op het dal richting Valloire en in de verre achtergrond het uitzicht op de Mont Blanc. Gaaf!
Last year I rode this climb on the day of the TdF. As a warming up I did the Lauteret, which is easy to do. Because the col was closed there was no traffic except for cyclists and pedestrians.
Nice climb which is short in distance. This makes this climb easy to do for everyone and to keep up. From the other side is that a very different story. Recommended for all cyclists who are in the vicinity of Briancon.
Vorig jaar deze klim op de dag van de TdF gereden. Als warming up de Lauteret gedaan wat goed te doen is. Omdat de col was afgezet was er geen verder verkeer op fietsers en voetgangers na.
Mooie klim die kort is qua afstand. Hierdoor is deze klim voor iedereen goed te doen en vol te houden. Vanaf de andere kant is dat een heel ander verhaal. Aanrader voor alle fietsliefhebbers die in de buurt zijn van Briancon.
Today I made the trip from Bourgd Oisans and enjoyed it very much.
Lighting in the tunnels is recommended to be seen.
The whole ride goes up to about 7-8% and the last 1,5km to the Galibier was steep but doable (10-12%).
Vandaag heb ik de rit gemaakt vanaf Bourgd Oisans en heb erg genoten.
Verlichting in de tunnels is aan te raden iig om gezien te worden.
De hele rit gaat tot ca7-8% en de laatste 1,5km naar de Galibier was wel steil maar te doen.(10-12%)
I cycled up this climb in Bourg d'Oisans. In total about 47 kilometers of climbing. The part towards the Lautaret was very long, but doable. I would like to advise everyone to take a light for the tunnels. Due to the closure of the tunnel at Lac du Chambon, there is a new road on the south side of the lake. For this you need a small piece of Les Deux Alpes. Then it is obvious. Once at the top of the Lautaret I found the climb to the Galibier easy to do. Only the last part (1.5 km) is really hard.
Ik heb deze klim vaunit Bourg d'Oisans opgefietst. In totaal zo'n 47 kilometer klimmen. Het stuk naar de Lautaret toe vond ik erg lang, maar goed te doen. Wel wil ik iedereen adviseren lampjes mee te nemen voor in de tunnels. Vanwege het afsluiten van de tunnel bij Lac du Chambon is er een nieuwe weg aan de zuidkant van het meer aangelegd. Hiervoor moet je een klein stukje Les Deux Alpes op. Dan wijst het zich vanzelf. Eenmaal op de top van de Lautaret vond ik de klim naar de Galibier goed te doen. Alleen het laatste stuk (1.5 kilometer) is echt even doorbijten.
I had done the Lauteret first in 2 parts because I wanted to stay overnight. The view towards the Galibier is frightening but once on the climb I found the difficulty less! Even with the 25kg pack it was easy to do. I could only ride up to the tunnel because the real top was closed unfortunately.
Ik had de Lauteret eerst in 2en gedaan ivm overnachting. Het aanblik naar de Galibier toe is beangstigend maar ik vond eenmaal op deze klim de moeilijkheid reuze meevallen! Zelfs met de 25kg bepakking was het goed te doen. Alleen heb ik tot aan de tunnel kunnen rijden want de echte top was afgesloten helaas.
This climb is of course much easier than from the other side. But if you climb the Galibier from Bourg d'Oisans or all the way from Briançon, you will get a nice climb that should not be underestimated. I find the long hauls (instead of hairpin bends) very mentally demanding.
Deze klim is natuurlijk veel makkelijker dan vanaf de andere zijde. Maar wie de Galibier opklimt vanuit Bourg d'Oisans of helemaal vanuit Briançon krijgt een aardige beklimming voorgeschoteld die niet onderschat moet worden. Mentaal zijn die lange halen (ipv haarspeldbochten) erg zwaar vind ik.
