Done from La Clusaz on my Route des Grandes Alpes. Nothing difficult, but very pretty pasture landscapes. In short, a pleasant pass to climb.

Nice climb from our starting point Annecy. In my opinion, Col de Aravis has two parts. The part up to La Clusaz and the part from La Clusaz. The climb up to La Clusaz is a busy road with a lot of traffic which makes it harder to enjoy the scenery. Now it didn't help that it was Sunday. That part is only 3 stars for me. From La Clusaz it's a different story. Beautiful curves through the forest and soon views of the snow-covered peaks. Lovely climb that doesn't hurt anywhere. At the top, there is free lemon water for cyclists and plenty of places to eat.

Since the inception of the Tour de France, the Col des Aravis has been conquered no less than 42 times. It is often classed as a 2nd category climb, but at its last crossing in 2023 during the famous "five mountains Tour de France" it was rated only as a 3rd category climb. Marc Soler went over the top first that year.

Apart from the 7 hairpin bends, where in the 3rd last one you can gain as much as 23% gradient if you stay inside bend, the climb is not much significant. It is (relatively) crowded in terms of motorised traffic.
Some running strips of around 6% are abruptly interrupted by a gently descending strip before turning into a short wall of over 10%. In general, this is a slope where you can ride much of the way in front on the big slab.

Nice long climb where you start in the villages and gradually ride into the real mountains. The tarmac is good and the road can be busy at first but closer to the top the road becomes quieter. At the end it is enjoyable with some nice wide hairpin bends.

The start of this climb is awful, it was very busy with too many trucks and no shoulder I almost turned back. The last 8km from La Cluaz is very nice though with no traffic, smooth road and nice views. Personally unless you can start from La Cluaz I would avoid as there are many better climbs in the area.

Well, I had to write a review of this climb sooner or later because this pass is so special to me. First of all because it is the first pass I have ever climbed in my life. Secondly, and most importantly, I have many memories of it (a period of happiness and carefreeness are linked to it). During the summer of 2021, I was a seasonal valet at the Hotel Restaurant des Rhodos, located at the top of this pass. Every morning, for almost two months, I left my studio in La Clusaz where I was staying, and cycled to the summit. And in the afternoon, I would come back down to my house, not without extreme joy because I loved the descent and the speed (which would cause me problems later on).
As for the climb (that's what you're here for after all): from Thones to La Clusaz, nothing too complicated, apart from a portion before Les Villards at 6, 7%, a portion that has been redone and is new. Be careful, there can be a lot of traffic here. Then, from st Jean de Sixt to la Clusaz, everything is fine, nothing too bad with percentages at 2, 3, 4 % in a steep passage, between 2 mountains, a few meters from the rock standing vertically for several tens of meters high. You get out of all this, you enter La Clusaz and hop, it starts directly with a passage at 7 %, nothing too complicated but it gives you a glimpse of the rest. Then, it calms down a little but it remains sustained by staying at about 6 %. Then you get to the part of the graph in red, showing 8 % average but don't worry, it's not as steep as it looks on the graph.
The landscape will start to change to a more alpine and wild setting. The slope is still steady without being too complicated but after the second bend, the part that I find the hardest begins. The slope, then 6.5 % for several kilometres, increases to 7.5 /8 % and this for 1 km. The climax of this is the beginning of the second lace where you will have to give a few dances. After that, the slope will remain at around 7 % until the last 400 metres at 3 % which will allow you to take a breather and above all to observe one of the most beautiful panoramas in the Alps: the signal of Bisanne with behind it the imposing massif of Mont Blanc with its peaks at more than 4500 metres. If you want more info, check out the alpes4ever website. The road surface is great but the traffic can be very annoying at times. Indeed, it seems to me that this pass is the most visited in France! Be careful on the descent, there can be surprises! On September 1st, 20 days before the end of my contract, I fell on the descent because of a stone that was lying in the middle of the road. The result was a broken wrist and scratches all over, so I had to go home a bit early. End of story.

Nice climb ! Quite rolling from Thones, then steeper once past the resort of La Clusaz. Very nice alpine landscapes to walk through! A climb that deserves to be remembered.

Chouette ascension !
