For those who think that Norway is not suitable for cycling. Here is proof that it is not. From Geiranger over a small mountain and via the ferry to the top of the climb. There I took the bike and cycled down. There are few views that really amaze me, but the valley and waterfall of Trollstigen left me in a state between hysterical laughter and disbelief. The climb is fairly busy for Norwegian standards, but is certainly doable with the bikes. The car drivers have enormous respect for t... read more

A very nice climb, I had already explored it by car so the wow feeling was gone though.
I have done and seen some Alpine climbs and they are more beautiful. Nonetheless, this is worthwhile.

Ascension will take place at the beginning of June 2024, a few days before it closes for the rest of the year.

The ascent via scenic route 63 from Valldal has a fairly gentle average gradient of around 4%. The downside is that it takes 25 kilometres.

In the other direction, the climb is completely different. The percentages are more around 7-8% all the way up with a few spikes on the bends. Above all, at the very beginning, you find yourself at the foot of mountains that very easily exceed 1000 metres. They rise up in front of you with such force that they inspire fear, respect and admiration all at once. Then there are the waterfalls that you see throughout. It's like entering Ali Baba's cave.

Trollstigen is an extraordinary climb. Few passes offer such a sumptuous setting. We climbed to the top of the pass in very difficult weather conditions, with thick fog and heavy rain. Once we got to the top, we couldn't see a thing. As is often the case in Norway, you have to be patient and wait for the weather to improve, as it can change quickly. That's what happened for us and after a quarter of an hour at the top, the clouds have lifted, the immense mountains take shape and two sumptuous waterfalls are revealed. In the background is a valley as far as the eye can see, and there in the foreground, right in front of us, is the road, with its long switchbacks and hairpin bends, winding its way to the bottom. An extraordinary climb in an enchanting setting.

Avalanches and landslides are common at the end of winter. It takes months of hard work to make this route passable. So yes, there is an economic interest for Norway in welcoming tourists and selling related products. Nevertheless, access to the road is free and the country is once again proving that access to natural attractions is something that is particularly close to its heart.

At Trollstigen, each bend bears the name of a person who played a crucial role in the design or maintenance of the road.

Choose an early morning or late afternoon to avoid the influx of camper vans and tourist buses.

Great climb that is perfectly doable despite the traffic. We did it from the river by Sogge Bru over the pass and down to the fjord in Valldal and then back. Great morning out!

A super ride worth doing as you get a lot for your hard effort!
Waterfalls, hairpins, mountain walls, trolls, bridges, valley views… (of course womo’s and cars) and a welcome sprawl of bike packers too!

We rode gravel bikes with 40cc tyres - not that these were needed as the asphalt is pristine!

Starting just outside Åndalsnes, going through choosing our return cafè stop (can recommend both Eat Well and Sødahlhuset) gave us an undulating start to warm the legs up. Lured into a downhill after the Troll paraphernalia cafe (you can’t miss it!) you are greeted with a steady and constant climb that gives a little rest-bite or opportunity to attack on the hairpins.
These appear to spring out of the waterfall ahead while framing it higher above as your eyes are drawn to them.

Once you reach the Trollstigen Cafe you can continue for a further 2-3 km meandering to where the next Kommune starts to hit all Strava segments from this direction.

The descent was great , we managed to miss most of the coach traffic as did the climb in the afternoon…perhaps all the cruisers were back on board?!

My first pass in Norway. It immediately set the tone! And there would be some very nice ones to follow in the coming weeks. Do leave in time because it is also a very popular pass for cars and especially motorhomes.

And another tip: do not think you are already there at the lookout, it is still a piece by I found out.

Mijn eerste pas in Noorwegen.

The car drivers have enormous respect for their road companions and do not hesitate to wait if the road is too narrow. (Many French motorists could learn a lot from this!)

Once down, you have to drive on to the restaurant with the many Troll statues. From here you can turn around and start the climb. The gradient is one of the most pleasant in Norway, so you can blast uphill with a good gear.

Watch out for the Trolls on the road because, according to the stories, you will be cycling on their stairs to the high mountains!

The waterfall can be seen from every angle and makes the climb a fairy tale! Top 3 favourite climb ever. If you are ever in the area, definitely do it!

P.s. for the really interested I can recommend the Channel of MatthewNorway. He has a great video on the maintenance of this road to get it ready for the summer! https://youtu.be/lG8jDu0xyQk
Nice to see how much work is done to give access to this beautiful area! This makes the many toll roads in Norway a little more acceptable :)

Thanks for the video tip. I also thought it was an amazing climb, but appreciate it even more now that I've seen that video. And even if I had 'm cycled in June, between the snow walls in April/May seems totally cool.

A climb from my top 5 (between toppers like the Grossclockner and the Teide).
Beautiful climb, beautiful surroundings.

Our experience was with a little one of 5 months in the bike trailer. June 25, 2017 was the 1st day the pass was open. So we were lucky as this was our 1st leg of the holiday. We were the first cyclists of that year, and even got an interview with a local Norwegian TV station.

On top we cycled between 4m high snow walls. Epic!

Schitterende klim, schitterende omgeving.

Episch!

An addition: there is also a very nice climb from Geiranger to Dalsnibba in the same region. I have 'm not ridden myself, but you cycle from sea level to the highest fjord view from a tarmac road. Often right through the snowfields if you look at the images on the internet. That climb is also very high on the wish list.

I have little to add to the description, except for some pictures. The photo with all the hairpin bends gives the best view. The photo in the valley shows how the approach from Andalsnes looks like. The other two pictures show the view from the top (after the tourist visitor centre). The photo's are from june and you can see enough snow left on the mountains. Are you going to Norway, are you in the area and is this pass open (there is often snow on it until April or even May) then you really want to go up here.

If you go up by car or bus, you will beat yourself up for not having arranged a bike. It is busy on the road, but on the Norwegian roads people treat cyclists very well is my experience. I was even encouraged several times from cars.

Frequently Asked Questions

Trollstigen can be cycled from 2 sides. Trollstigen is the most popular side, but the summit can also be reached via Trollstigen from Valldall.

Trollstigen is a challenging ascent. For this type of climbing, we recommend mountain gearing, specifically a compact system. This means a small front chainring of 34 teeth, combined with a rear cassette where, depending on your level, strength, and experience, you choose a sprocket with 30, 32, or even 34 teeth. Remember that a smooth cadence is always more efficient!

Trollstigen is a first-category climb: long and tough. Do not underestimate this climb. Many famous Tour de France cols fall into this category. Prepare for a long, challenging ride. Only well-trained riders will reach the top smoothly. Make sure you have a road bike with climbing gears and enough training; otherwise, it will be a struggle.

Trollstigen is 6.8 mi long.

The average gradient of Trollstigen is 7.6%.

Trollstigen has a steepest segment with an average gradient of 13.4%.

The summit of Trollstigen is at 2858 ft.

At a slow pace of 5 mph, it takes about 01:22:31 to climb Trollstigen. At 7 mph the time is 00:58:25, and at 9 mph 00:45:31. For the fastest cyclists, 00:34:12 is an achievable time.

Trollstigen is located in the region in Norway.
