Really lots of traffic even during the week (holiday season), but there are some great views on the Adamello range while going up. There is a bike path that flanks the climb, it looked like to be newly paved, but also much steeper than the road. At the summit, the World War memorial is solemn and stunning. Nothing else to see on the top: lots of shops, cafès, people and commercial stuff (on the same category as the Stelvio). I couldn't find gels anywhere...
4/10 I rode the last 9km of this climb after the Stelvio and Gavia. In terms of percentages, it's not necessarily challenging. I found there was quite a lot of traffic driving and also quite fast unfortunately. The last part you have more 'free view' and you can also enjoy the surroundings quite a bit perhaps :) I did really like the descent towards Fucine because it is not too steep and twisty. Oh yes, at the top there are two supermarkets (which are also open on Sundays)
Ascent to the pass that connects Valle Camonica with Trentino.
Long climb but always with gentle slopes.
Lots of traffic, including heavy trucks.
Numerous cyclists.
Good training and nothing more.
At the top after Ponte di Legno there are beautiful views of the valley and the Adamello.
I did this climb starting from Ponte di Legno after having done the Gavia pass to avoid the long initial half-plan seasoned by heavy traffic. The gradients are moderate and there are no pedalling difficulties.
1st/3 is terrible with hi traffic, 2nd/3 is mostly flat - while shifting to hi gear you leave the crowds behind and mountains get closer - 3rd/3 is an Alpin road. Gateway to enter Sud Tyrol with gentle slopes, not really an exciting climb. A parallell asphalted bike path is available, nice to descend back to Edolo (water fountain near Ponte di Legno at a small park).
Done on 02/07/2023 during the Tour d'Ortles coming down from Gavia so not complete from Edolo.
Very rideable climb: beautiful view towards Ponte di Legno as you climb up to the right.
Unfortunately "infested" of motorcyclists who mistake it for a track.
Like Patrick and Jeroen, I only did the last part from Ponte di Legno. Fine, smooth climb. Nice to slalom between the cable cars. The flat to the top, there you can drive yourself empty in preparation for a long descent. Although the road surface in the descent is good, you have to reckon with a lot of traffic.
Like Patrick, I did the last 10 kilometres of this climb after the descent from the Gavia. I didn't think this was a bad climb at all. Maybe it's because after the descent of the Gavia I was a bit fed up with a road surface full of pits, cracks and holes. Nice wide road, sometimes a nice view, sometimes a cable car low over the road. The largest part runs nicely through a forest. The road is not too busy. The last 4 km are on brand new tarmac.
The village where the climb ends, on the other hand. What a monstrosity of a village. Behind the war memorial mentioned earlier, there is a little fountain.
From Edolo you can still choose; Passo Tonale or maybe the Mortirolo? I have chosen the milder Tonale pass. The road to Ponte di Legno is quite busy with through traffic, but not unsafe. After Ponte di Legno it becomes quieter and you can still choose to go for the legendary Passo di Gavia. I climb further, zigzagging under the ski lift to Tonale. The climb gets steeper from here on (mostly 6% with occasional peaks of 8%) but runs nicely and never becomes really difficult. On top of the pass is a typical ski village where everything is available.
In short: nice climb and doable as a warming-up for or in combination with other climbs in this region.
Coming from the descent of the Gavia I only cycled the part from Ponte di Legno, so the last 10km.
Start with a gradual climb over a wide and sometimes busy road via some hairpin bends up the forest slope. You cycle a few times under the long shuttle cable car that in winter brings a mass of skiers from the valley to the ski area above. The last 2 or so kilometres are relatively flat to the summit.
There is little summer activity on the plateau full of hotels, ski lifts and a bombastic war memorial.
Functioned (eg 2010) as arrival place of Giro stage on the Gavia.
