I've done this climb twice, once on an old steel bike and once on a more modern frame, both times were incredibly hard but fun! I got unlucky both times and got a foggy weather reaching the top which I meant I couldn't see the beautiful view but even in grey foggy skies the climb is incredibly enjoyable!

It's best to have eaten light before tackling this mountain. The slopes are tough and leave no room for respite. There's no management here: you give it your all. But the effort is rewarded: once at the top, it's magnificent. As well as the incredible scenery, you may be lucky enough to come across some Pottoks. :)

Beautiful climb with very steep sections. You start at the Pas de Roland on the river Nive and first climb wooded before coming out to a spectacular mountain landscape where you have to climb steeply for kilometres and hopefully enjoy some of it. Only downside was that in the first part, cars'd overtake rather quickly without respecting 1m50, which is quite a big difference between French and Spanish Basque Country anyway.

This climb is an experience in itself. We did it on a biketrip and left the saddlebag on an embankment at the foot, which was a good thing, because I don't know if we'd have made it to the top with it.
Bestial, violent, inhuman

Bestial, violent, inhumain

Start in the valley along the Nive. Then it gets tougher with some assaults all the way (more like 12/13% or even more with mini descents or repla) the end is very hard over the last 4 km, with a mini recovery (replat) in the middle at the Mehatze pass.

Coming from Espelette, I started with the Col de Légarré as a hors d'oeuvre. Along with Mont Artzamendi, they are typical of the Basque country: steep and violent. For me, Artzamendi is much harder than Ventoux or Tourmalet. I swore (on the most severe slopes) I'd never do it again🤣...
The previous comments are absolutely correct,
On the other hand, what a beautiful climb on this magnificent little Basque road, not to mention the descent to Pas de Roland.

This is a real beastly climb. I rode it this summer. Be careful in the beginning where it is very wooded and narrow. The last 4km run at an average of 13%. There are long stretches without rest with hundreds of metres at over 15%. The only goal here is to get to the top. Be careful on the way down and make sure your brakes work!

This is truly my favorite area. Man, how incredibly beautiful it is here. And indeed ... it is climbing, climbing and more climbing. I remember very well that I rode this climb. It was the day after Tom Dumoulin won his time trial in Espelette for the 2018 Tour.
I had plotted out a short circuit with this climb in it while my family cooled off in the lake. It's a narrow road and I was still surprised how busy it was up there. Even a little higher up the mountain there are still a number of restaurants where the terraces were full.
What I found very frustrating was that there were still a number of valleys in it, while the whole time it is hard work to drive up. On the way back it turned out that these valleys were also going up. That gives you an idea how steep the rest is. ;-)
At the end I turned right to the Col des Veaux. Just as steep. There I wanted to descend to get back to the lake, but that was not possible. In French, the tarmac ended on the terrace of a restaurant and behind the restaurant the road continued but unpaved and not passable for my racing bike. So I went back the same way and halfway took another climb to get out of the valley.
Beautiful, but very hard.

Very nice climb but very difficult not to entrust between any leg. For experienced climber. Avoid the days of great affluence, much traffic narrow road.

Does it come highly recommended? That depends on what you like. If you like long steep mountains (like the Angliru) then you can have a great time here. The approach over the Pas de Roland is truly 'stunning', the first km's through the forest, along the river go up and down on narrow roads (asphalt is fine). But then; once you get into 'the open' the misery began (for me, anyway). Continuous gradients above 15% (according to my Garmin). Real raking, not a moment's respite. The road ends at a radio station (no terrace unfortunately ). So turn around and descend. But beware, the road is very narrow and cluttered in the forest. Unsurprisingly, not that many 'Stravists' do this climb (568 only). The views are phenomenal but whether it is worth it?
