Steep climb known over very tight tarmac. How different it used to be when this was a cobbled climb. This version pulls incredibly long and is a great way to get to the top, although you usually come to Geraardsbergen for the famous cobbled version!

If you don't like riding cobblestones or don't want to go up a big provincial road in Geraardsbergen, it's best to choose this one. Still quite steep on several sections and narrow in places. Watch out for cars's driving down here, the street is two-way for cyclists only.
Als je niet graag kasseien rijdt of niet over een grote provincieweg naar boven wilt in Geraardsbergen, kies je deze best. Toch wel lekker steil op verschillende stukken en smal op sommige plaatsen. Goed opletten voor auto's die hier naar beneden rijden, de straat is enkel voor fietsers tweerichtingsverkeer.

If the comments on the 'Vesten' version of the Muur are to be believed, many people are unaware that the access to the cobbles of the Muur via the Denderstraat and the Abdijstraat used to be the standard ascent, at least until the end of the 1980s. This is the version that appears in Cotacol. The passage through the "Vesten" has made the climb more aesthetic but also (slightly) easier. I always prefer to climb via the Denderstraat and the Abdijstraat. Less picturesque but still more challenging.

Like many I discovered it when I wanted to drive up the wall for the first time. If you come from the north along the Dender river, the signpost "De Muur" (The Wall) is placed too early, so you turn left too soon and you're in the Kloosterstraat. I was very surprised not to see any cobblestones and suddenly (read: after a lot of suffering) found myself at the top of the chapel. No special climb at all between the houses, I wouldn't recommend it. Rather take the one and only Muur Van Geraardsbergen.
Zoals velen heb ik deze ontdekt wanneer ik eigenlijk voor de eerste keer de muur op wou rijden. Als je van het noorden langs de Dender komt, staat het bordje met "De Muur" te vroeg waardoor je te snel linksaf slaat en in de Kloosterstraat zit. Groot was dan ook de verbazing als ik geen kasseien was tegengekomen en ineens (lees: na veel afzien) aan de kapel stond boven. Helemaal geen speciale klim tussen de huizen, ik zou hem niet aanraden. Neem dan liever de one and only Muur Van Geraardsbergen.
A few years ago I rode this climb because the center of Geraardsbergen was closed. Spicy calves but does not match in terms of entourage and physical effort the real climb of Geraardsbergen.
Een aantal jaar geleden deze opgereden omdat het centrum van Geraardsbergen afgesloten was. Pittige kuitenbijter maar haalt het qua entourage en fysieke inspanning niet bij de echte beklimming van Geraardsbergen.
I drove up the Wall yesterday and tried to return along Kloosterstraat (Old Steenweg). This is not a good plan, as it is a narrow street. Every oncoming car is immediately too much and you are on foot. Walking down with cycling shoes is not recommended either. Very steep climb!
Ik reed gisteren de Muur op en probeerde langs de Kloosterstraat (Oude Steenweg) terug te rijden. Dit is echter geen goed plan, aangezien het een smalle straat is. Elke tegenligger is meteen te veel en je staat te voet. Ook wandelen met koersschoenen naar beneden is niet aangeraden. Zeer steile klim!
According to my observation, the steepest climb in the Flemish Ardennes. For a moment I imagined myself in the real Ardennes. Anyway, the hilly Geraardsbergen and its ditto climbs look very Walloon.

Recently I rode up the Kloosterstraat because the Tour didn't allow me to climb the Wall. There are some steep parts in the climb, but you do go up on a billiard cloth, which makes it a lot easier than the wretched cobblestones of the real wall.
Onlangs de Kloosterstraat opgereden omdat ik door de Tour de Muur niet op kon. Er zitten best wel wat steile stukken in de beklimming, maar je rijdt wel op een biljartlaken naar boven wat het een pak makkelijker maakt dan die ellendige kasseien van de échte muur.
