13 Km in plm. 1u 15min. Toch niet écht beschamend
A nice climb that is part of the Engadin radmarathon, an organisation I warmly recommend. The climb starts in the village and you immediately start the toughest part. You encounter a number of hairpin turns and the climbing percentages are continuously high. After a few kilometres you come out of the forest and have more wide views in typical alpine landscapes. From here it doesn't get really tough (unless the weather is icy cold and wet as was the case with me). The tarmac is mostly good and there is some traffic.
I had a very windy day, although with magnificent sunshine. The climb alternates between very challenging sections and others where you can catch your breath. Once you leave the forest, it becomes a typically alpine landscape that relaxes the eye. Road surface in perfect condition except for a couple of roadworks on the ascent and one on the descent to Davos.
I tackled the climb on a sunny Saturday in early September, after having done the side from Davos: the traffic on this side is even heavier, unfortunately along the way there were two stretches with roadworks and traffic lights with alternating traffic, and in addition to having to pedal on dirt roads, the queue of cars reached almost 1 km. On this side, the route is quite steep everywhere, except for a couple of km in the middle section; the only positive note is the absence of a headwind. The only fountain is at the beginning in the village of Susch.
Nice tough climb with perfect tarmac and nice hairpins. The start is tough with stretches of +10%, but after the hairpins it becomes less steep for a few kilometres. After a few kilometres to recover, the percentage slowly rises again towards 9% without you noticing. Then it's a matter of pushing on until the end is in sight.
Coming from Zernez you turn left in the centre of Susch and immediately via some hairpins on good road surface through the woods you gain altitude in the side valley formed by the Susasca mountain stream, which will accompany you the whole climb. Route is stepped with some less steep parts and hairpins in groups spread over the climb. Once above the tree line, the last kilometers to the summit are beautiful in a stunning high mountain backdrop of rocks, snowy peaks and mountain lakes. On the pass height is a mountain guesthouse (supply).
Most beautiful side of the Fluela Pass.
I have cycled the Fluela pass after the Ofen pass, both are of great beauty. The Fluela starts out tough right away and those first steep miles feel like way more than four. Fortunately, it flattens out a bit after that and you can at least sort of mill around and get a rhythm. This is then completely turned upside down, at least for me 9% is really too steep to have a rhythm. Fortunately, my speed is so low that I can enjoy the surroundings, and I can do that very well here. Especially around km 8-9 when you can see the completely unspoiled side valley on your left, beautiful! The last part was hard, headwind, you can see the road running so you know you have to go quite far until you get to that lake. Then it is suddenly completely flat anyway. Quickly went into the hut for a hot chocolate because with the wind it was freezing cold. Absolutely recommended, but because the climb is quite remote and relatively long, I will not return every year.
