Plenty of hairpins with decent elevation. Steady climb with views at the top down to Palma. Shaded with trees & very little traffic due to the main road cutting through tunnel (bikes not permitted).
I would say it is almost the best climb on the island due to the serpentines that go through the middle of nature
The first stretch from Sollér is moderate, very busy. But as soon as you turn off, there is virtually no traffic. Very even so you can get into rhythm well.
Be careful, as a descent, this one is quite linky. It's on the north side so always in the shade. The road was very slippery due to moss on the road (in November). And wild goats pop up everywhere, even in the trees.
The first few kilometres up to just before the tunnel are not so nice. There you still have a lot of traffic and the road surface is not always that good. But if you turn left before the tunnel, you continue cycling in a real cycling paradise with very little traffic. And all those hairpin bends make this climb a fantastic experience.
The first part is fairly dangerous and uninteresting, but once you leave the main road it's total bliss: shade, twists and turns, a steady slope and very little traffic. An absolute must!
A faire absolument !
Lovely experience all those hairpins. It keeps you at a nice pace.
The descent, on the other hand, is no fun. Asphalt there, especially in the second half, is not the best. And continuously braking for the hairpins is less fun than full speed ;-).
This climb is sheer bliss. Once off the main road by the entrance to the tunnel you'll do well to see another car all the way to the top. Switchbacks galore, good surface, cracking views and a few goats too. The valley on the other side is stunning from the top.
The climb out of Soller to the tunnel can be a bit scary as there is plenty of traffic, turn left at the tunnel, and it's a steady climb to the top, can be very shaded in parts. Great Cafe at the top, the descent down on the other side has poor road conditions as or sept 2024
This is one of the must-do climbs on the island of Mallorca. Unfortunately, the first part is hard because of the traffic, but once you leave the main road it's a real treat: shady road, good surface, virtually no traffic, even gradient and lots of twists and turns, absolutely brilliant!
First 3km is a bit tough along the busy road but once you turn off for the tunnel the fun begins. Beautiful climb with lots of hairpin bends. Highly recommended!
Aanrader!
The ascent of Col de Soller is a pleasure. Hairpin bends follow each other in quick succession. For me it was easy to do with 34 x 25/28. Out of the saddle now and then. The approach from Soller, however, is difficult and annoying because of the traffic rushing by from Palma (through the tunnel). The descent from Col de Soller to Bunyola is clear, but the last 2 km the road surface is terrible. The ascent of this col is a must if you are going to cycle on Malloca. Nice shady climb when going up and the descent in the sun. Be careful for wild goats that unexpectedly cross the road.
My preferred site of the Coll de Sóller because the road surface is of better quality, there is more shade and Sóller is near the main cycling attractions in the island. I came from Palma so did the south side first, descended, and made a U turn at the north entrance of the tunnel near Sóller (2 km from the city centre). From there it took 25 min on my rented Cannondale Supersix Evo. Refueling at the top where you meet fellow riders. Both sides are a real hairpin festival.
This side of Coll de Soller is a bit longer and more difficult than the side from Bunyola. Also here little traffic and an abundance of hairpin bends. While the other side is quite open and sunny you drive here reasonably sheltered, because the whole climb is between 2 mountain ridges. There are also more trees here for some extra shade on a hot day.
