That Hannibal crossed this mountain with his elephants in 218 BC to trek to the Po Valley in Italy is still not certain and has been causing debate among historians for centuries.
What I am absolutely sure of though (and I am not alone if you see the reviews) is that the cross-border Col Agnel is FANTASTICly beautiful to cycle up:
High, long, a few short steep sections, some narrow villages that slow down the little traffic, fine wide asphalt, bike info signs every km. and the last 6 km. the hairpin turns turn you through the pure high-mountain scenery of the Parc Naturel Régional de Queyras while the marmots on and beside the road whistle at you.
TOPCOL, on your bucket list with it !!!
note: (25/08/25) workmen had started on the summit installing fences , removing the Scarponi wood sculpture statue and there was an excavator. Maybe there is a plan for a small refuge after all?
Dat Hannibal met zijn olifanten in 218 voor christus deze berg overstak om naar de Po vallei in Italië te trekken is nog altijd niet zeker en zorgt al eeuwenlang voor discussies bij historici.
Waar ik wel absoluut zeker van ben (en ik niet alleen als je de reviews ziet) is dat de grensoverschrijdende Col Agnel FANTASTISCH mooi is om op te fietsen:
Hoog, lang, paar kort steile stukken, enkele smalle dorpjes die het weinige verkeer vertragen, prima breed asfalt, fietsinfobordjes elke km. en de laatste 6 km. draaien de haarspeldbochten je door het puur hooggebergte decor van het Parc Naturel Régional de Queyras terwijl de marmotten op en naast de weg je toe fluiten.
TOPCOL, op je bucketlist ermee !!!
nota: (25/08/25) werkmannen waren op de top gestart met het plaatsen van omheiningen , het verwijderen van het Scarponi houtsculptuur beeld en er was een graafmachine. Misschien is er toch een plan voor een kleine refuge?
Climbed on 25/8/25 after having done the Izoard from Briancon. Beautiful climb in the middle of great scenery. The last part above 2500 Hm is the toughest because of the altitude. Very quiet in terms of traffic. There is no hut or restaurant at the top.
Beklommen op 25/8/25 na de Izoard vanuit Briancon gedaan te hebben. Prachtige klim midden in een geweldig landschap. Het laatste stuk boven de 2500 Hm is het zwaarst vanwege de hoogte. Zeer rustig qua verkeer. Boven is geen hut of restaurant.
A superb climb! The road is in very good condition, with lots of traffic, but it's easy to mix with other road users as the road is wide. On the first part of the route, you can see a young lady wearing a headdress if you look to your right. A must do!
Une superbe ascension ! La route est en très bon état, beaucoup de circulation mais la cohabitation se fait facilement avec les autres usagers car la route est large. Dans la première partie, on pzut apercevoir une demoiselle coiffée si on regarde sur sa droite. A faire absolument !
Superb col (perhaps nicer than Galibier or Stelvio) with lots of marmots, nice views and picturesque villages, last 7km are quite tough as you have to climb from 2000 to still 2740m there. By the way, the climb itself was quite quiet but at the top it was very crowded
Schitterende col (misschien wel mooier dan Galibier of Stelvio) met heel veel marmotten, mooie uitzichten en pittoreske dorpjes, laatste 7km zijn behoorlijk pittig omdat je daar van 2000 naar nog 2740m moet klimmen. De klim zelf was overigens vrij rustig maar aan de top was het erg druk
What can I say? A long, superb ascent. The route winds along the Aiguille d'Agnelle, past marmots and pastoral landscapes.

Beautiful climb through a beautiful valley. At 2744m altitude, it is still one of the highest cols you can climb by (road) bike in the Alps. The valley attracts a lot of wind but on the day in July that I rode up it there was only a breeze. The downside is that you are then fairly plagued by swarms of flies. The last 2 km to the col are the toughest but strangely enough I also get stronger as the altitude increases... At the top of the col there is only a small car park so there you prefer to get away from the crowds quickly. Be careful during the descent where you can develop quite a bit of speed ; the tarmac is not uniform everywhere (!) Definitely a must do col although I slightly prefer the tougher Italian side.
Mooie klim doorheen een prachtige vallei. Met 2744m hoogte toch één van de hoogste cols die je met de (race-)fiets in de Alpen kan beklimmen. De vallei trekt veel wind aan maar op de dag in juli dat ik hem op reed was er slechts een briesje. Nadeel is dat je dan redelijk geplaagd wordt door zwermen vliegen. De laatste 2 km tot de col zijn de zwaarste maar vreemd genoeg wordt ik ook sterker naarmate de hoogte toeneemt… Bovenop de col is er slechts een kleine parkeerplaats dus daar ben je liever vlug weg uit de menigte. Opgelet tijdens het afdalen waar je behoorlijk wat snelheid kan ontwikkelen ; het asfalt is niet overal gelijkmatig (!) Zeker een must do col alhoewel ik een lichte voorkeur heb voor de zwaardere Italiaanse zijde.
Fantastically beautiful climb, with stunning views in the second part. The climb itself is fine until about five kilometres before the summit. The final stretch is still a bit tough. Once at the top, it is a carnival with motorbikes and sports cars, which, incidentally, often race past at ridiculous speeds.
Fantastisch mooie klim, met in het tweede deel schitterende vergezichten. De klim zelf is tot een kilometer of vijf voor de top prima te doen. Het slotstuk is nog wel even pittig. Eenmaal op de top is het kermis met motoren en sportwagens, die overigens ook vaak met achterlijke snelheid voorbij komen razen.
Wonderful climb. Officially, the pass opens sometime in July. I was able to get to 1.5 of highest point on 27 May. Pity, but also nice to end in snowy landscape and it was very quiet as a result. Seen dozens of marmots.

I did today 21st of May 2025. The road is closed from the last hamlet before the summit. For that reason the snow has not been removed from the road, and it was covered with snow 1.7km from the top, so I couldn't ride further.
But it also meant I was totally alone, no cars, no motorbikes, not even a single cyclist. Only marmots...
The views were magnificent with all that snow.
About 2km from the top there is a section where my Garmin indicated 15％.
The wind was very strong and also beware of the tarmac which has a lot cracks on the last kilometres, some are twice wider than road bike tyres...
The first part of the climb until Molines is quite boring...
One of the unmissable climbs. taken along from guillestre along a marvellous valley with gentle slopes. the 20 km to the pass are pedalable for 3 quarters, never too hard, perfect road and asphalt, little traffic (mid-July) and respectful for the most part. you pass very beautiful villages in the middle of green meadows with the highest peaks in the background. then 5 km from the end the road becomes steep and hard, breathless. luckily there are several hairpin bends that help ... the landscape becomes more and more beautiful and majestic up to the summit. once you arrive you can enjoy a fabulous view even on the italian side, perhaps even more beautiful. many cyclists at the top coming mainly from the italian side.
una delle salite imperdibili. presa lunga da guillestre percorrendo una valle meravigliosa con pendenze dolci. i 20 km al colle per 3 quarti sono pedalabili mai troppo duri, strada e asfalto perfetti traffico poco (metò luglio) e rispettoso in gran parte. si passano borghi molto belli in mezzo a prati verdi con sullo sfondo le cime più alte. poi a 5 km dalla fine la strada impenna e diventa dura, senza respiro. per fortuna ci sono diversi tornanti che aiutano...il paesaggio diventa sempre più bello e maestoso fino alla cima. arrivati si può godere di un panorama favoloso anche sul lato italiano forse anche più bello. tanti ciclisti in cima provenienti soprattutto dal lato italiano.
It's long but it's beautiful. There was still a bit of snow despite July. We came across goats and very picturesque villages.

What a beautiful climb! It had been on my wish list for a while but when we arrived in this area the col turned out to be closed. But for cyclists, it was fortunately already open. It starts quite gently through beautiful scenery. The higher you get the steeper it gets but doable everywhere. We were there in early June and there was an enormous amount of snow, which meant that at the end we only cycled between the snow. Truly a wonderful sensation. Once at the top, the passage to Italy was closed due to the huge piles of snow. Descent was cold but the road surface is fine for descending.
Wat een prachtige klim! Hij stond al even op mijn verlanglijstje maar toen we in dit gebied aankwamen bleek de col dicht te zijn. Maar voor fietsers was hij gelukkig wel al open. Hij begint vrij rustig door een prachtig landschap. Hoe hoger je komt hoe stijler hij wordt maar overal goed te doen. Wij waren er begin juni en er lag enorm veel sneeuw waardoor we op het laatst alleen nog maar tussen de sneeuw fietsten. Echt een prachtige gewaarwording. Eenmaal boven was de doorgang naar Italië dicht door de grote hopen sneeuw. Afdaling was koud maar het wegdek is prima om af te dalen.

Nice running climb with steep sections here and there, but very doable.
When descending, do watch out for the many marmots that have burrows along the road and regularly cross!

Mooie lopende klim met hier en daar steile stukken, maar heel goed te doen.
Let bij het afdalen wel op de vele marmotten die holen hebben langs de weg en regelmatig oversteken!

Je ne sais pas pourquoi mais je ne voulais pas le grimper ce col Agnel.
De plus, j’étais allé à Saint Véran deux jours avant. Refaire ce même chemin ne m’excitait pas. Ce matin, j’ai fini par me convaincre que j’étais trop près de lui pour le bouder.
Cette ascension est somptueuse. Surtout la fin. En fin d’après-midi attention aux marmottes qui traversent partout. Les vues en haut sont sublimes. Les derniers km sont durs. La route est très bonne et très belle. A faire sans l’ombre d’un doute.
Superb climb. Just after opening (late May) last kilometres cycled between skiers and high snow walls. When I was there hardly any traffic.
Schitterende beklimming. Vlak na de opening (eind mei) laatste kilometers tussen de skieërs en hoge sneeuwmuren gefietst. Toen ik er was nauwelijks verkeer.

Incredible climb, done under 30 degrees! The profile is a bit wrong, you can add 1％ per kilometre over the last 5, and the "recovery" ramp in the middle of the climb really breaks the legs. Nevertheless, it's incredible to get to the top at 2744!
One good thing is that there are fountains in every village or hamlet you pass through.

If you first do col d'izoard and descend, follow the arrow to col agnel and not far from it, the col begins.
Definitely recommended. Easy to do in the beginning, but the last km's were difficult, especially because we had a serious headwind in some parts.

Arriving at the border of France and Italy, there is not much space and opportunity to rest. This is due to the low number of square meters available and the high altitude where you catch a lot of cold wind. For me it was clear: get the hell out of there.

Op de grens van Frankrijk en Italië aangekomen, heb je niet heel veel ruimte en gelegenheid om te rusten. Komt door laag aantal vierkante meters beschikbaar daar en de hoogvlakte waar je veel en behoorlijk koude wind vangt. Voor mij was het duidelijk: snel wegwezen daar.
Alleen langer te verblijven met een fijn windjack aan.

The Col Agnel is a beautiful climb. If you are passing through to Italy, it is also nice that the Italian side is really different than the French side. A narrower road, worse road surface and even steeper.
The French climb starts out tough, then gives you some rest and from 8 kilometers to go, it doesn't go below 8％. Some parts of the climb are above 10 and then it slows down again. The climb has few turns, almost no hairpins. I found it a fairly "straight" route.
Along the way, up to about 10km from the top, you'll find water points in the small villages. At the bottom of the climb, there is a supermarket to score a sandwich and a Snickers.
The summit is crowded, there was even a hamburger stall on this sunday. It was also funny to see where people were getting to the top. Tandems, bikes with at least 20 kilos of luggage, grandpas on racing bikes being paced by grandma on e-bike, bikes from the eighties with a chain that hasn't been lubricated in 10 years, and of course many fat bikes over 10k.
De Col Agnel is een mooie klim. Als je op doorreis bent naar Italië is het leuke ook dat de Italiaanse kant écht anders is dan de Franse kant. Een smallere weg, slechter wegdek en nog wat steiler.
De Franse klim begint pittig, geeft je dan even rust en vanaf 8 kilometer te gaan komt het niet meer onder de 8％. Hele stukken zijn boven de 10％ om dan weer even af te zwakken. De klim heeft weinig bochten, nagenoeg geen haarspeldbochten. Ik vond het een vrij ‘rechte’ route.
Onderweg kom je tot een kilometer of 10 van de top waterpunten tegen in de kleine dorpjes. Onderaan de klim zit nog een supermarkt om nog een broodje en een Snickers te scoren.
Op de top is het druk, er stond op deze zondag zelfs een hamburgerkraam. Het was ook grappig te zien waar mensen allemaal op boven geraken. Tandems, fietsen met zéker 20 kilo bepakking, opa’s op racefietsen die door oma op e-bike gepacet worden, fietsen uit de tachtiger jaren met een ketting die al 10 jaar niet meer gesmeerd is en uiteraard veel dikke fietsen van boven de 10k.
I just did this climb from Guillestre but unfortunately I expected it to be easier. The first kilometers go well with here and there a rest but from km 12 it's pumping to the top some pieces 10-11％ pfff. Once at the top, you have nice views towards Italy and France. This Col is one of the nicer Cols!
Zonet deze beklimming gedaan vanuit Guillestre ik had het helaas simpeler verwacht. De eerste kilometers gaan goed met hier en daar een ruststukje maar vanaf km 12 is het pompen naar de top sommige stukken 10-11％ pfff. Eenmaal op de top heb je mooie uitzichten richting Italie en Frankrijk. Deze Col beland bij een van de mooiere cols!

Pfoe. Sometimes I think this is a runner and at other times I drive myself crazy on the walls, because the climb isn't very running either. It goes up and down quite well, with a firm end. And on days when you're not in the mood for it, it's a tough climb that really hurts. The nature is always great though!
In recent years, the tarmac has deteriorated which is especially noticeable in the descent.
Pfoe. De ene keer vind ik dit een loper en de andere keer rij ik mezelf kapot op de verschillende muren, want echt heel lopend is de klim ook niet. Het gaat best redelijk op en af, met een stevig einde. En op dagen dat je er iets minder goed inzit is het een zware klim die echt goed pijn doet. De natuur is echter altijd geweldig!
De laatste jaren is het asfalt wel slechter geworden wat vooral in de afdaling te merken is.

Nowhere really super heavy, but maybe that was because I rode on reserve to save for the climb to the Italian side. And at the end, because of the altitude, it was still hard!

Nice running climb. Started with good weather in Vieille Ville the last kilometer was chilly in the clouds. Beautiful Alpine scenery. Heard many marmots, only seen 1. The descent had quite a few longitudinal cracks in the asphalt, watch out! Ticked off another bucket list climb!
Mooie lopende klim. Met goed weer begonnen in Vieille Ville was de laatste kilometer kil in de wolken. Mooi Alpenlandschap. Veel marmotten gehoord, slechts 1 gezien. De afdaling had nogal wat linke lengtescheuren in het asfalt, opletten! Weer een bucketlijstklim afgevinkt!

Very nice climb through a very quiet valley, hardly any cars and other cyclists, while I cycled it a few weeks ago in the middle of the high season. And actually quite doable. Last part is of course very steep. And if you go early, you'll see a lot of groundhogs who indeed suddenly shoot across the road, so pay attention to that on the descent.
Heel mooie klim door een hele rustige vallei, nauwelijks auto's en andere fietsers, terwijl ik 'm een paar weken geleden midden het hoogseizoen fietste. En eigenlijk best goed te doen. Laatste stuk is natuurlijk wel lekker steil. En als je vroeg gaat, zie je zeker veel bergmarmotten die inderdaad zo maar ineens de weg over schieten, dus let daarop bij de afdaling.
Finally the Agnel is on my list of victory points. I had already read a lot about it but the reality is so much more spectacular. On Wednesday 26/07/2017 in beautiful weather I cycled up from Guillestre. A great climb. Then we descended to Casteldelfino and after a terrace, we tackled the rather difficult climb on the Italian side. It must be said that the climb from Italy is much harder than the one from France. The last ten kilometres are indeed very tough but still a must for the real climbers. In one word fantastic.
Eindelijk staat de Agnel op mijn erelijst van gefietste cols. Ik had er reeds veel over gelezen maar de realiteit is nog zo veel meer spectaculair. Op woensdag 26/07/2017 in prachtig weer naar boven gefietst vanuit Guillestre. Een heerlijke klim. Dan afgedaald naar Casteldelfino en na een terrasje de aard lastige beklimming aan de Italiaanse zijde onder de wielen geschoven. Het moet gezegd dat de beklimming vanuit Italië nog zoveel zwaarder is dan aan Franse zijde. De laatste tien kilometers zijn immers loodzwaar maar toch een aanrader voor de echte klimmers. In één woord fantastisch.
Great climb and great descent
Climbed this col in July 2015 with my 13 year old son, both on mid 90s, 10kg steel road bikes, with triple cranckset.
Started from Ville Vieille (skipped the part from Guillestre). Very enjoyable climb, among others because of the beautiful alpine landscape in combination with almost no traffic. And that on a Saturday at the end of July! Surprisingly also only two fellow cyclists on the way up and not even one that was descending.
Once on the pass, many cyclists did come up, but from the Italian side. And they all came back down to Italy as well. The descent on that side looked quite spectacular - with all its steep and sharp hairpins - so we decided to descend to Chianale, 950m lower. The descent was not very comfortable, mainly because of the bumpy tarmac.
Despite a good lunch in Chianale, the climb back to the col turned out to be harder (max 15%) than from the French side. A smallest (30/30) gear ratio was just enough to get us to the top, with speeds of sometimes no more than 5 or 6 km/hour.
Once back on the col, the descent on the French side was unequalled! Thanks to again almost no traffic and really great tarmac we reached enormous (but still controllable) speeds.
Together with the Mont Ventoux, this was our favorite climb!
Geweldige beklimming en prachtige afdaling
Deze col in juli 2015 beklommen samen met mijn 13 jarige zoon, allebei op mid jaren 90, stalen racefietsen van 10kg, met triple cranckset.
Vanuit Ville Vieille begonnen (deel vanuit Guillestre geskipt). Superlekker geklommen, o.a. vanwege het schitterende Alpenlandschap in combinatie met praktisch geen verkeer. En dat op een zaterdag eind juli! Verrassend genoeg ook maar twee collega fietsers op weg naar boven en zelfs niet ook maar eentje die afdaalde.
Eenmaal op de col kwamen er wél veel fietsers naar boven, maar dan vanaf de Italiaanse zijde. En die daalden allemaal ook weer terug naar Italië af. De afdaling aan die kant zag er heel spectaculair uit – met allemaal stijle en scherpe haarspeldbochten – waarop we besloten naar het 950m lagere Chianale af te dalen. Erg comfortabel was die afdaling overigens niet, vooral vanwege het hobbelige asfalt.
Ondanks een prima lunch in Chianale bleek de klim terug naar de col zwaarder (max 15%) dan vanaf de Franse kant. Een kleinste (30/30) tandwielverhouding was nog net genoeg om ons terug boven te krijgen, met snelheden van soms niet meer dan 5 of 6 km/uur.
Eenmaal weer op de col, bleek de afdaling aan de Franse kant echt weergaloos! Dankzij opnieuw praktisch geen verkeer en werkelijk geweldig goed asfalt haalden we enorme (maar nog goed te controleren) snelheden.
Samen met de Mont Ventoux was dit onze favoriete klim!
Lovely and beautiful. You imagine yourself in another world. Wake up in the beginning and then go full speed ahead at the end. Start early, because the wind can be on your head the whole climb, and that is strong wind.
From Guillestre is a nice climb. Before you really start you already have 25 km of fall flat on your back. Nice to let the lesser gods start from the bridge. I wonder if you can catch them before the end.
In short, beautiful in a beautiful landscape. Not an easy col. If you are looking for a nice combo, it lies in the combination with the L'Izoard from Briancon.

Heerlijk en mooi. Je waant je in een andere wereld. In het begin wakker worden en dan aan het eind weer volle bak. Start dan wel vroeg, want de wind kan de hele klim op de kop zijn, en dat is dan ook sterke wind.
Vanuit Guillestre is het lekker klimmen. Voor je echt begint heb je er al 25 km val plat op zitten. Leuk om eventuele mindere goden te laten starten vanaf de brug. Ben benieuwd of je ze voor het eind inhaalt.
Kortom, mooi in een prachtig landschap. Geen makkelijke col. Mocht je een leuke combo zoeken, ligt die in de combinatie met de L'Izoard vanuit Briancon.
Veel plezier, let wel op, het weer is zeker belangrijk!

Another fantastic climb! Because I had already cycled from Guillestre along the Guil to the Ixoard and wanted to be back at the campsite with my wife and kids 'quickly', I took the car to Ville-Vieille. From there you can still climb long enough ;-)
Completely different nature than for example the Izoard, but not less beautiful. Prepare yourself for the last 5 kilometers. Pithy, but with the top in sight, doable!
I had great weather, only used arm pieces for the descent. Yet it seems to storm here, so make sure you have the right clothes and go on a beautiful day (which is certainly not a guarantee).
Ook weer een fantastische klim! Omdat ik al vanuit Guillestre langs de Guil naar de Ixoard was gefietst en ook weer 'snel' terug op de camping wilde zijn bij vrouw en kinderen, met de auto naar Ville-Vieille gereden. Van daar uit kan je nog lang genoeg klimmen;-)
Compleet andere natuur dan bijvoorbeeld de Izoard, maar niet minder mooi. Bereid je wel voor op de laatste 5 kilometers. Pittig, maar met de top in zicht goed te doen!
Ik had heerlijk weer, alleen armstukken bij de afdaling gebruikt. Toch schijnt het hier flink te kunnen spoken, dus zorg voor de juiste kleding en ga op een mooie dag (wat zeker geen garantie biedt overigens).
Superb climb, first 14 km very doable, then it gets a lot steeper.
Schitterende klim, eerste 14 km zeer goed te doen, daarna wordt het een stuk steiler.
Beautiful col, wonderful nature!
