Ik vind hem niet de mooiste om te doen, maar wat een geschiedenis. Als je richting Valkenburg komt gezoefd om dan zo snel als je durft de bocht te nemen om de Cauberg aan te vatten voel je toch de anticipatie in je lijf. Climb from Valkenburg a/d Geul to Vilt that must be done at least once. The climb starts gently and after a few hundred metres you get the steepest part. At the bridge over the road you have the steepest part behind you and can start gearing up again. Although I live in the Heuvelland region, I avoid this climb as much as possible because of the heavy traffic.
Klim vanuit Valkenburg a/d Geul naar Vilt die tenminste één keer gedaan moet hebben. De klim begint rustig en naar een paar honderd meter krijg je het steilste stuk. Bij de brug over de weg heb je het steilste deel achter de rug en kan je weer gaan opschakelen. Hoewel ik in het Heuvelland woon laat ik deze klim vanwege het drukke verkeer zoveel mogelijk links liggen.

I was in the area, so catch it ff, but it's not my favourite in Valkenburg. Personally, I prefer the Brakkeberg, but you can't ignore the Netherlands' most famous climb. I was lucky that one time it was quiet towards the top,so was able to ride recognised and swerving along the road. Despite not being the prettiest climb in South Limburg, it's still quite a challenge. The start is manageable, but as soon as the curves come you can go. You're glad when you get under the little bridge, because then it's back to gear up and roll out.
Ik was in de buurt, dus pak je hem ff mee,maar het is niet mijn favoriet in Valkenburg. Persoonlijk doe ik liever de Brakkeberg, maar Nederlands bekendste klim kan je niet links laten liggen. Ik had het geluk dat het een keer rustig was naar boven toe,dus kon herkend en zwalkend over de weg rijden. Ondanks dat het niet de mooiste klim is van Zuid-Limburg, is het toch een flinke kluif. Het begin is goed te doen, maar zodra de bochten komen kan je eraan. Je bent blij als je het bruggetje onderdoor bent,want dan is het weer bijschakelen en uitbollen.
I live relatively close to the Cauberg and have gone up it to the max on several occasions. Because of the heavy traffic it is hardly ever possible to turn at full speed up the Cauberg via the daalhemmerweg. If you want to set a good time, I recommend starting on the outside leaf, then quickly switching to the inside leaf and from the bridge back to the outside leaf, as from there it is flat to the finish. If you have been pedalling hard before that, you will see that you still want to get out of the saddle to sprint in the final stretch but your legs won't allow it. The Cauberg looks easy but sneaks into your legs, which is also due to the irregularity and the sudden change from false flat to the steep part. My PR is 1:40 (28.3 average) from the turn to landal. I hope I get to hit the magic 30 per hour someday!
Ik woon relatief dichtbij de Cauberg en ben hem al vaker maximaal omhoog gegaan. Door het vele verkeer is het vrijwel nooit mogelijk om met volle snelheid via de daalhemmerweg de cauberg op te draaien. Mocht je ook een mooie tijd neer willen zetten raad ik aan om op buitenblad te starten, vervolgens al snel naar binnenblad te schakelen en vanaf de brug weer naar het buitenblad, vanaf daar is het immers vlak naar de finish. Als je daarvoor al hard doorgetrapt hebt zal je zien dat je tijdens het laatste stuk nog wel uit het zadel wilt om te sprinten maar je benen dit niet toelaten. De cauberg lijkt makkelijk maar sluipt veneinig in de benen, dit heeft ook te maken met de onregelmatigheid en de plotse omschakeling van vals plat naar het steile stuk. Mijn PR is 1:40 (28,3 gemiddeld) vanaf de bocht tot landal. Ik hoop dat ik ooit nog een keer de magische 30 per uur mag halen!
Fun climb despite heavy traffic. There is plenty of room on the bike path that rolls wonderfully. Because it is such a good road surface it feels less steep than it really is. The offshoot may still be able to poke around with the wind in front.
Leuke klim ondanks het vele verkeer. Er is genoeg plaats op het fietspad dat heerlijk rolt. Doordat het zo'n goed wegdek is voelt het minder steil aan dan het werkelijk is. De uitloper kan met wind op kop misschien nog wel even prikken.

Holland's most famous climb is one you must have ridden. The climb itself not exceptional. It gets spicy for a while but never super steep and you also get to the top quite quickly. Still, you imagine yourself a pro for a moment as you ride through the famous scenery of the AGR and World Cup's.
Nederlands bekendste klim is er één die je gereden moet hebben. De klim zelf niet uitzonderlijk. Het wordt even pittig maar nooit super steil en je bent ook vrij snel boven. Toch waan je jezelf even een prof als je door het bekende decor van de AGR en WK's rijdt.

The most famous climb of South Limburg does not owe its fame to its 'difficulty'. Personally, it is a bit of a letdown and you can easily ride it up, trained or untrained. However, it is a beautifully constructed street with cycle paths on both sides. Unfortunately, at weekends or on public holidays, it is terribly busy at the foot of the climb in the centre of Valkenburg, so be careful!
De meest bekende beklimming van Zuid-Limburg heeft zijn bekendheid niet te danken aan de ‘zwaarte’ ervan. Persoonlijk is het wat een tegenvaller en kan je deze getraind of ongetraind makkelijk omhoog rijden. Wel een prachtig aangelegde straat met fietspaden aan beide zijden. In het weekend of feestdagen is het helaas verschrikkelijk druk aan de voet van de klim in het centrum van Valkenburg, voorzichtig zijn!
Nice climb but still one that you mainly pick up because of the fame. There are several nicer and tougher climbs in the area. An additional disadvantage is the crowds in Valkenburg on nice days, so you have to be careful before you start the climb.
Leuke klim maar toch eentje die je vooral meepakt vanwege de bekendheid. Er zijn in de buurt diverse mooiere en zwaardere klimmen. Bijkomend nadeel is de drukte in Valkenburg op mooie dagen, dat is toch even opletten geblazen voordat je aan de klim gaat beginnen.
Well ... the Cauberg. It is certainly not as fierce as some other climbs, but that is exactly why you can be tempted to 'give it some gas'. But then the average recreational climber will encounter some resistance, I think. It depends of course (as with every climb) at which moment you take it.
Because this climb is in the middle of Valkenburg, it is often part of a ride in southern Limburg (whether or not as a descent). If it were located somewhere else in South Limburg, my preference would be for other climbs.

Maar dan komt de gemiddelde recreant zich toch wel even tegen, denk ik. Het hangt er natuurlijk (zoals bij iedere klim) vanaf op welk moment je hem neemt.
Omdat deze klim midden in Valkenburg ligt, is dit er één die vaak wel onderdeel van een ritje Zuid-Limburg is (al dan niet als afdaling). Als hij ergens anders in Zuid-Limburg had gelegen, zou mijn voorkeur bij andere klimmen liggen.
Very doable on a Tuesday in November because there was little other traffic (no cyclists either by the way). So I could focus on the climb and it's quite a nice and steady climb, although it's not a big one compared to other climbs in southern Limburg. Leaving Valkenburg is fun and there is a lot to see along the route. The asphalt of the bicycle lane is fine, but towards the end it becomes a bumpy road. Then you also pass the signpost "Col du Cauberg" but then you are not yet on top, the top lies after the curve to the right.
Climbing technical and environment 3 stars, for the (legendary) name an extra star.
Prima te doen op een dinsdag in november want er was maar weinig ander verkeer (ook geen fietsers trouwens). Kon me dus goed op de klim focussen en het is best een lekker stevig ding, al is het geen topper vergeleken met andere Zuid-Limburgse beklimmingen. Valkenburg uitrijden is leuk en er e.e.a. langs de route te zien. Het asfalt van de fietsstrook is prima, tegen het eind wordt het echter een wat hobbelig tegelpad. Dan passeer je ook het bord "Col du Cauberg" maar dan ben je nog niet boven, de top ligt na de bocht naar rechts.
Klimtechnisch en qua omgeving 3 sterren, voor de (legendarische) naam een ster extra.
A steep, but relatively easy climb. It's tough from the start, and very constant, and gets easier towards the end. Because of the relatively short distance you can keep up a nice pace. The surroundings are nice, although there is no such thing as a view.
Een steile, maar relatief makkelijke klim. Hij lastig vanaf het begin, en erg constant, en wordt makkelijker naar het einde. Vanwege de relatief korte afstand kan je er een aardig tempo inhouden. De omgeving is fraai, hoewel er niet zoiets als vergezichten te zien zijn.
This one is solid but not super long. This one is for the average cyclist to do I think. But worth it, just because of the name ;-)

Many of us try to do a Gilbert and pop from the foot. But few succeed. The slope is just a bit too difficult for that. But apart from that it is not so bad, at least not as bad as you would expect. Too bad about the heavy traffic, but to be able to put such a name on your record, you defy that gladly.
Velen onder ons proberen een Gilbertje te doen en vanaf de voet knallen. Maar weinigen slagen erin. Daarvoor is de helling toch wel net iets te lastig. Maar voorts valt hij mee, toch t.o.v. hetgeen je ervan verwacht. Spijtig van het vele verkeer, maar om zo'n naam op je palmares te kunnen zetten, trotseer je dat graag.

From Valkenburg it starts friendly, but as soon as the corner turns right, it gets steeper. Soon you see the viaduct and the top of the climb. There are two choices: ride slowly to the top, or sprint to the top!

This climb is fun to take, and because of the history. What has happened on the Cauberg. The infamous corner is nice and spicy. From the viaduct you can pull a sprint to the top. It is very busy with traffic, so keep right.

The Cauberg needs no introduction, whether you read good or bad reviews here doesn't matter, you have to climb it sometime. You can't call it a mountain, but it certainly gets a lot out of your legs. The crowds don't really make it worthwhile, there are nicer and quieter climbs in the area, the Cauberg however has the most status.
De Cauberg heeft natuurlijk geen introductie nodig, of je hier nu goede of slechte reviews leest maakt ook niet uit, je moet hem toch ooit een keer beklimmen. Een berg kan je het niet noemen, maar hij haalt zeker wel heel veel uit je benen. De drukte maakt hem het niet echt waard, er zijn mooiere en rustigere beklimmingen in de buurt, de Cauberg heeft echter de meeste status.

Lots of traffic and a wide road so it does not seem as steep as it is, stop cycling at the house just after the campsite (last house before a meadow), because there is the top (and the strava segments haha).
Zo bekend en daarom moet je deze natuurlijk gedaan hebben. Er zijn veel zwaardere klimmetjes in de omgeving maar je mag de Cauberg toch ook niet onderschatten. Veel verkeer en een brede weg waardoor het niet zo steil lijkt als dat het is, stop pas met hard fietsen bij het huis net na de Camping (laatste huis voor een weiland), want daar is pas de top (en de strava segmentjes haha).
My very first climb ever, starting from the AGR Xperience. Since then I have a love-hate relationship with this climb. Although there are much tougher climbs, it's always more of a let-down than you'd like.

Na het kapelletje links komt het steilste stuk en als je onder de brug doorkomt is het einde in zicht. Als je hier op je computer kijkt en de snelheid begint niet met een 3 dan hoef je niet te dromen van deelname aan de AGR.....
Although it is the most famous slope of the region, in my opinion it is certainly not the most beautiful. It was very busy at the foot of the climb. The climb itself was pretty tough for me, also maybe because it was at the end of my ride.
Ondanks dat het de bekendste helling van de regio is, wat mij betreft zeker niet de mooiste. Aan de voet van de klim was het erg druk. De klim zelf was voor mij redelijk zwaar, ook misschien omdat hij aan het einde van mijn ritje zat.

Zeker niet de mooiste en zwaarste beklimming maar wel de beruchtste. De Cauberg begint makkelijk en kan op het steile stuk nog vies tegenvallen. Dat is de plek waar het verschil wordt gemaakt. Als je de Cauberg naar beneden komt, moet je goed opletten. Je gaat namelijk heel snel heel hard en onderaan is een druk kruispunt. Ik spreek uit ervaring.

Most people who want to brave the hills of South Limburg for the first time, start in Valkenburg. You can do this climb at the start or after the finish, then you can say at home that you have been up the Cauberg. But it is not impressive. Too busy, too ugly. There are about 10 climbs in Limburg that are more fun, more beautiful and more interesting to climb than the Cauberg.
De meeste mensen die voor het eerst de heuvels van Zuid-Limburg willen trotseren, starten in Valkenburg. Je kunt deze klim dan prima bij de start of juist na de finish meepakken, dan kun je tenminste thuis zeggen dat je de Cauberg op bent geweest. Maar indrukwekkend is ie niet. Te druk, te lelijk. Er zijn zo 10 beklimmingen in Limburg die leuker, mooier en interessanter zijn om op te fietsen dan de Cauberg.
The Cauberg is not the most beautiful nor the toughest climb in the region. But if you cycle it regularly to improve your own fastest time, this is a heart rate increasing challenge. On the last part of the climb you can get completely exhausted.
De Cauberg is niet de mooiste en ook niet de zwaarste klim uit de regio. Maar als je hem regelmatig opfietst om je eigen snelste tijd te verbeteren, is dit een hartslagverhogende rakker. Op het afvlakkende laatste stuk kan je compleet leeglopen.

Het is ook niet echt aan te raden om een terrasje te doen in Valkenburg en dan de Cauberg op te knallen. Ik reed in de verzuring tot het einde van m'n rit.
As often with famous names, it is a little bit disappointing in reality. This is not only because of the climb, which is quite nice and quite hard in the middle, but Valkenburg is much too busy and the road along the Cauberg is busy too. The bike path is wide enough, but stay on it.

Zoals wel vaker met bekende namen, valt het in het echt een klein beetje tegen. Dat ligt niet alleen aan de klim, die is best leuk en in het midden behoorlijk zwaar, maar Valkenburg is veel te druk en de weg langs de Cauberg is ook druk. Het fietspad is breed genoeg, maar blijf daar dan ook op.
Hij hoort erbij, hij is zeker leuk, maar er is echt leuker en mooier in Limburg

Am impressed with the Cauberg. Today I rode it for the first time on my E-Bike together with my husband and went from the Parkinson association. Only I was a bit surprised while I was almost at the top and cyclists in front of me were almost at a standstill, I passed them and ended up partially on the roadway resulting in a car behind me honking loudly and overtaking me again and then dropping the speed.
Fortunately she pulled up in time and I could proudly go to the finish. Maybe it is a tip to warn participants in time not to go outside the bike path because that can be very dangerous. I have also experienced this for the first time on my 70th.
Ben onder de indruk van de Cauberg. Heb vandaag deze voor het eerst gereden op mijn E-Bike samen met mijn man en ging van de Parkinsonvereniging uit. Alleen was ik wat verbaasd terwijl ik bijna bovenaan was en wielrenners voor mij bijna stil stonden ben ik hen gepasseerd en kwam gedeeltelijk op de rijbaan terecht met als gevolg een flink toeterende auto achter mij die mij weer in haalde en vervolgens de snelheid liet zakken.
Gelukkig trok zij op tijd weer op en kon ik trots naar de finish. Misschien is het een tip om deelnemers tijdig te waarschuwen vooral zich niet buiten het fietspad te begeven daar dat ook erg gevaarlijk kan zijn.heb dit ook op mijn 70ste voor het eerst mee gemaakt

The Cauberg is not too bad, it's in every training circuit 2 to 3 times and every weekend. In Limburg are many longer beautiful and tougher climbs than this.
De Cauberg valt reuze mee hij zit in ieder training rondje 2 a 3 keer en ieder weekend opnieuw. In Limburg zijn veel langere mooiere en zwaardere klimmen dan deze.
Except for the traffic, the Cauberg is worthy of its status, although the degree of difficulty is a lot less than other South Limburg calves like the Eyserbosweg and the Camerig.

Funnily enough, this is a pretty easy slope to take, despite the 13%. Maybe because of the smooth build up it runs very easy and you keep enough air for the last 300m.
Gek genoeg is dit een vrij makkelijke helling om te nemen, ondanks de 13%. Misschien door de vloeiende opbouw loopt deze zeer makkelijk en houd je genoeg lucht over voor de laatste 300 m.
