An adventurous outing that's well worth it when the tunnel is open (14/08/2023 was the case), if you're prepared to carry the bike through difficult conditions at rockfall level. I climbed from Saint-Quentin-sur-Isère with what I had on hand, a mountain bike with gravel tyres. The first 500m of ascent (hard!!) are the subject of another page. After Montaud it's smooth and steady, but the road is bad. Beautiful views over the Voironnais. When I reached the new landslide, I manage... read more

Hello, I'm an amateur cyclist with a heart condition and pacemaker. I ride a steel gravel bike, so it's heavy. So I'm trying to find relatively gentle slopes so that I can progress slowly and control the bpm/watt. I chose the upper part of the route, eliminating the big dip between Veurey and Montaud. I set off a little before the Montaud car park before the village and climbed gently up to the last rockfall at 2022 after the paragliding start.
The first surprise on the way up was that the road had been resurfaced as far as the paragliding area. So you can drive without putting a wheel in a hole. The road is often in a terrible state. With gravel it's easier.
The climb is regular and the effort just as regular, which is good for me given my disability.
The added bonus is that it's a quiet dead-end road. Apart from a few Feyssol or pas de la clé hikes, there aren't many people around and the pretty views over the Voironnais invite you to take a break.
The rockfall can be crossed by carrying the bike. Personally, and also because I'm a doctor of geology, I won't do it because it's very exposed and risky. A few cairns indicate a small path. Next is the Mortier tunnel to Autrans. Be careful, there is no guarantee that the tunnel will be open. I've seen it closed before, and you only know that when you go through it.
Finally, the descent was complicated because the amount of gravel is phenomenal. But you can't have everything, knowing that the road leads nowhere. It's an outing to do again! From Veurey, it's a hell of an outing for sure.

I've often climbed the first seven kilometres of this ascent, all the way to Montaud. It's a tough climb in itself, and it's renowned as such in the region.

But I've only climbed beyond it once, some twenty years ago, despite the prohibition signs. I had to stop precisely at the point indicated as the end of the road on this profile. At the time, it was simply impossible to go any further: a whole stretch of road had been completely washed away by landslides, and nothing had been done to replace it. If that's the case today, so much the better!

When I reached the new landslide, I managed to cross it. The successive passage of people has created a vague path between the rocks, which helps a little. At the end, some branches have been laid down in a staircase, but you have to think about going back down a few metres to find them, otherwise you'll be treated to some very perilous passages through the tree trunks. A light road bike would have been easier to handle for this section...
Then a few very stony sections where the gravel tyres came in very handy, and we arrived at the tunnel. It was open and I was able to pass through on the Autrans/Méaudre side and continue on down the gorges de la Bourne!

Cyclists, don't go there! Since the end of July 2022 a new landslide has occurred a few hundred metres before the one that occurred a few years ago. The passage is more than difficult, even with trainers, and especially very risky in view of the size of the landslide and its width. We passed through in mid-August, not without difficulty, with full knowledge of the situation and to see the extent of things, and we were not disappointed! Not to be attempted if you are alone as this would be totally unwise.

Amis cyclistes passez votre chemin !!!

Hard pass for the first 10 km then softer at the end despite the damaged road. It's a good training but I don't recommend it, especially if like us you climb the rockfall to get to the tunnel which is closed. We had no choice but to turn back...Worst exit ever!
